Mayweather vs. De La Hoya?

Featured Replies

No boxing fans out there?

This could be a great fight.

I think Oscar has the skills and power,

but Mayweather can't be hit.

I pick Mayweather by decision.

But I'm not betting on it.

I am sooooooooo pumped. I have been going back and forth for the past few weeks. Today I am on De La Hoya. Who knows about tomorrow. ::)

I have been getting into the UFC the past few years, but there is still nothing better than a big boxing match IMO.

My 10 year old boxer's name is Oscar...after De La Hoya. He was my favorite boxer ever when he came to the pro's and would fight on Tuesday Night Fights. I havent been following boxing much in the last couple years, but from the Mayweather fights I have seen....I honestly think he is in a league of his own. I never saw a fighter as quick and powerful as him. My other favorite was BHop cause he is from Philly. MMA won me over. Who do you thinks gonna win Avid?

how de la hoya now?? i dunno i saw floyds last fight and that guy is sickly fast.  if your into boxing you should watch the contender special they have right now on tuesdays @ 9pm  alfonso gomez is great i love watching him fight.  i just have trouble spending 50 or 60 bucks to watch a fight it should be free boxing has been down for awhile now and they need to draw some good fights and more fans. i just wish iron mike didnt mess up his life he was a beast and i dont care if hes crazy he was fun to watch

boxing has always had it's ups and downs.

It's not a fan favorite but certain individuals, usually heavyweights will capture the attention of a greater audience.  Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, rocky Marciano, Muhammed Ali, to name some of the more notable.  More recently Mike Tyson was a huge draw.

Unfortunately the lighter divsions generally don't get the attention of the heavyweights. This is really too bad because so many great fighters and great fights have occurred.  Even small fighters like Bantam weight with a maximum weight of 118 lbs have outstanding and ferocious matches and are hero's in their home countries.

there are some lighter weight fighters who gave boxing a boost. Roberto Duran, and Sugar Ray Leonard were huge draws.

Oscar De La Hoya is a true champion with superior ring savy and outstanding power.  Mayweather is moving up in weight yet again and who knows this may be the "one step too many".  But Oscar has always had trouble with outstanding boxers.  And Floyd is among the best that ever were.

I give the edge in power to De La Hoya, but you can't knock out what you can't hit and I don't think he will be able to connect solidly with Mayweather.

I'm sticking with Mayweather by decision.

all i know is if you watched the arturo gatti fights with mayweather de la hoya is in trouble and i think gatti is a lot tougher than oscar sorry but my money is on floyd this will prove pound for pound best fighter. golden boy should stick to promoting

Ouch,

Not a De la hoya fan I see.

Fair enough. But "golden boy" has proven himself in some real tough brawls.  He deserves this fight and this payday.

Gotti was tough, and I really liked him, but to compare his skills to De la Hoya's is a joke.  gotti was a superior club fighter with the heart of a lion, but his only defense was to block punches with his face.  Oscar has genuine skills, but even though I don't see Mayweather knocking him out, I think Floyd will win.

C'mon sports fans, let's hear from ya'

i do agree with you on the skills avid. i do like de la hoya and always enjoy a good fight seriously how old is oscar?? i liked him when he was in his prime but this may be a stretch.  but i wouldnt mind seeing a smack talker get put on his butt either so either way i just hope its worth the hype

DeLaHoya has provenhimself, but when Mayweater tags him I think he is in for more than he can handle KO

Let me start by saying that I have always considered Oscar to not be nearly as good as the hype surrounding him, but for this one night I will root for him to win.  However, I don't expect it to happen.  DLH should be better at this weight than he was when he went up to fight Hopkins but I'm just afraid that he no longer has the speed to keep up with Floyd.   Floyd is one of the fastest fighters I have seen, and he also has excellent defense and does really well rolling his shoulders.  I can see DLH hanging strong with him for the first half of the fight, but I think Floyd dominates the second half and wins a fairly easy decision.  If Oscar can just land a couple of big left hooks he has a shot, but I can't see him getting enough of them in clean.

I think the Golden Boy can take him if he gets a couple of them hooks in

solid. ;)

Should be a good fight. But What happen to boxing? Where are the great fighters that we had in the past? Heavyweights? Where are the up in comers? There arent too many left that I can see.

Well they are tagging this as the fight that saves boxing. Then again they did that to Lewis vs. Tyson, Tarver vs. Jones Jr., etc., etc. The most exciting one I've seen in the past years was Klitscho vs. Lewis.

Anyway, I think Mayweather won't be talkin the trash when he walks out of the ring. None of these guys learn, you talk trash to Oscar and you pay for it. Mayweather's dad used to be Oscar's trainer and I really think he held him back.

My prediction. First four rounds are gonna suck. After that its going to break loose. Oscar by decision is probable. A 11th round knockout by Oscar is possible.

Where are the up in comers?

Andre Berto  He is being compared to a welterweight version of Mike Tyson.  I can see it.  I have seen 3 or 4 of his fights and I have been so impressed .......... and entertained. ;)

I don't think that this is the fight that will bring boxing back to it's heyday.  Like I said before it takes a dominant heavyweight to do that.  And I agree that right now the heavyweight division is pretty anemic.

As for trash talking, like it not it's a gate builder.

The argument about Oscar being a "hyped" fighter has long ago been settled.  I'll put his resume up against Mayweathers anyday.

Ike Quartay, Shane Mosley, Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker, Julio Ceasar Chavez and more.

Julio may have been past his prime but Oscar was in wars with great fighters.

The problem is not that Oscar isn't the real deal it's that at 34 with a gazillion dollars and a successful business how deep will he dig down if needed?

As for Floyd.  He's never been in serious trouble.  Will he wilt if Oscar pressure's him into unknown territory?

Floyd is 30 and agruably at his physical and boxing peak.  His speed is dazzling as is his ability to seize offense opportunities and get out before getting hit back.

No doubt - This is going to be a great fight.

Is the fight over yet??? Who won?

And the winner is ......................  Mayweather by decision 2-1

It could have gone either way IMO.  I personally had De La Hoya by a round or two.  Lots of rounds were too close to call.  De La Hoya was definitely the more aggressive one and Mayweather was running all over the ring.  Early it looked like De La Hoya was going to run away with it.  He wasn't exactly doing great, but Mayweather was doing NOTHING.  Seemed like DLH would land a solid combo or two in each of the early rounds.  Then the mid-late rounds DLH had either 2 or 3 single digit landed punches rounds.  That hurt him.  Neither one of them hurt one another and you can probably count on one hand the amount of "ohhhh ahhhhhh" punches.

Like I said, I had De La Hoya by a round or two.  He was trying to win while Mayweather was trying not to lose.

I watched it at a Casino, so I can't wait to see it next week on HBO with sound and hear the after fight reactions.

Maywether seemed to be playing the hit me with everything you got, because you aint got$#^#& game in those early rounds I think he was laying back and absorbing LaHoyas stuff, thing is once you do that YOU GOTTA REALLY TAKE CONTROL OVER THE OTHER (TIRED OUT) FIGHTER IN THE LATER ROUNDS, Mayweather didntdo that  and even though I picked Maywether this fight should have been a draw or slight edge to LaHoya ;)

I am real interested to what other people have to say about this.

I also just saw the "numbers" on ESPN news. Seems like on paper Mayweather ran away with it. That's not the "vibe" I got watching it. Also looking at the two fighters' faces after the fight, Mayweather has two big puffy eyes and you can't even really tell De La Hoya was in a fight. Odd because the #'s say Mayweather landed signifigantly more power punches. I had no idea the numbers were so lopsided while watching it live.  Like I said though, where I watched it I couldn't hear the commentary or see the numbers every round.

I am also interested to find out how the judges scored it.

Once again a setup for a rematch and even more money  :-[

I still want to see Mayweather fight UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk  ;)

I still want to see Mayweather fight UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk ;)

When Sherk slams him on the mat, Mayweather will be screaming for mercy.

I'm with you guys.....this would be huge for the UFC, or MMA in general.  Problem is, ain't no way it is going to happen any time soon....UFC couldn't pay the $$$ Mayweather would want. Sure, the UFC fighters are making more and more due to the increased popularity, but Mayweather would want HUGE amount of cash to do that.

but if it ever happens, that is going to bring in some major PPV  $$$.

As for the fight-I thought it was a good fight, but had De La Hoya as well. He was landing more punches, but he simply doesn't have the punching power of Mayweather.  He had Mayweather backed up to the ropes multiple times and landed a flurry of punches, but barely effected Mayweather...dude can take some punches...

Mayweather or la hoya would never last 10 seconds in a MMA fight ,they are boxers thats it .Everyone knows they are boxers and who ever they fight they are gonna shoot in and do a GnP simple as that>Besides the rules for boxing are a whole dif world then MMA fighting...
