College Football this past week

I assume there is a lot of interest in college football on this forum from observing other threads.  I thought I would start a thread where we could discuss the games from the past week.  If I'm wrong, this thread will die like any other, but otherwise, have at it, guys and gals! :)

My take on this past week (mainly the Big 12):

I thought this might be the year for Missouri in the Big 12 North, but after watching them almost lose to a young, but talented, Illinois squad, this Missouri team looks the same as any other that has been hyped over the last 10 years. . . . . . no defense, questionable decisions by coach Pinkel, and a new liability - no running game.  We can't play like this against Nebraska, etc. and hope to achieve anything.  I have to give credit to Illinois redshirt freshman and backup quarterback, Eddie McGee.  He gave a gutsy performance and almost pulled out the win.

How about Appalachian State beating number 5 Michigan?!!!

Texas struggled against Arkansas State.  Who expected this?

Well, there is a basketball school about 40 miles west of you than was pretty impressive against not too bad of a team.  However it is early and we'll just have to wait and see.  Could be interesting in Arrowhead later ;)

Even when Kansas has a bad team they always play decent defense.  I think that is Mangino's style.  And that style can beat even the best Pinkel-coached team on any given day as has been demonstrated.  So far Pinkel's Missouri teams have shown some flash, but solid play in the trenches will beat flash.  I hope I'm wrong but I didn't get a good feeling from Missouri's game on Saturday.  Chase Daniel may be running for his life this season.

How about those Irish?

Play like a champion today.  No, maybe tomorrow.

What bothers me about Appy State's upset of Michigan in the Big House is that Lloyd Carr is on his way out.

This means that Michigan needs to select a coach that is slim, articulate, good looking, somewhat young or looks young and who can coach to replace Carr.

So who would you select?

How about Jeff Tedford of Cal;  Tommy Bowden of Clemson; Steve Kragthrope of Louisville (if the Cardinals have another good year); Les Miles (Michigan alumni) of LSU; Bo Pelini (defensive coordinator of LSU); Derek Dooley (Vince's son) of Louisiana Tech; Jimbo Fisher of Florida State (selected to succeed Papa Bowden?); Randy Shannon of Miami of Florida or Bob Stoops of Oklahoma?

If the Wolverines lose to Ohio State at home on November 17 it is certanily lights out for Carr.

But before the Buckeyes invade the Big House, Michigan has to play Notre Dame, Penn State, at Michigan State (always a crap shoot) and Wisconsin on the road.

If I were any fans of any school that has a good looking and sucessful coach I would be worried that he would leave for Michigan and all those millions of dollars next year.

Indeed, Georgia Tech gave them a spanking.  I wasn't surprised that they won . . . but I was surprised by how lopsided the game was.

Senile1,

I heard that Charlie Weiss would not name a starting quarterback until right before the Tech game started.

Now I beleive he did not know their names!!!!! ;D

And look who is next on the Irish's schedule...Penn State.

Followed by Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue.

Do I see a 0-4 Notre Dame team?

  • Super User

More like 0-8.

Notre dame need some speedster on defense.

Right now, juding from stats Alabama has put up some yards and points. Last year Alabama highest toal yard was 444 yards against louisana monroe, and last saturday 'Bama produced over 500 yards of total offense.

It looks like they are starting to exceute better. They got Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Georgia, and Flordia state in the next couple weeks so lets see how they do. I"m real excited.

As far as the Texas struggle, it doesn't surprise me.  Don't be surprised if TCU doesn't upset them this weekend.  I think the team that I'm most impressed with (and was impressed last year when they trounced us in the Holiday Bowl) is Cal.  They pretty well man-handled Tennesee (especially in the second half).  That team is fast, they executed well, and flew to the ball.  I would keep them my favorite in the Pac 10 over USC.  I think the Florida St./Clemson matchup tonight is a good one.  I think this might be the deciding season for Bobby Bowden.  Like someone said the other day on a sports radio show, I don't ever see state firing him, but with another season like last year, he might consider hanging it up if that happens again.

Ed I hate to discuss college football but to keep your thread going I'll give it a shot. :)

I too was surprised that Missouri seemed sluggish. We can hope for a continuance of that when we head to Columbia for a night game.

No surprises by me for Okie State or KState losses. KState was a little closer than I thought but expected a defensive show/and little offense for Auburn.

Texas should have scheduled North Texas. Oklahoma got momentum and Texas has to have some question marks.

Typical Colorado vs Colorado State. A Rams victory would have complimented the Michigan loss for my it couldn't of happened to nicer guys.

Kansas did a good job against a MAC team some said would give them trouble.

Iowa State didn't schedule so well either.

Baylor was Baylor and I haven't read anything on the Aggies or Red Raiders.

And if I must I'll finish with the Husker Report Card.

Sam Keller QB B+ Managed the game well and was a great cheerleader for the running game.

The Running Game A++ Looked like pre Frank Solich. Marlon Lucky National Offensive Player of the Week. Watch out for the true freshman Quinten Castille. Thanks for passing on this one Texas.

Offensive Line A Best we've had in years when we truely were OLine U

Defense B+

D Line B+ Young but did a nice job, were going to miss Adam Carriker and Jay Moore.

Def Backfield B- (made adjustments in the 2nd quarter and was solid from there.

Linebackers A as good as it gets. (Oh and Ed 2 of the first 5 linebackers are from the KC metro)

Special Teams A+ What an upgrade. 6 kickoffs into or past the endzone, trust me thats a big deal this year kicking from the 30. The 46 yard field goal would have given us presumed victories against Texas and Auburn last year.

I realize that Nevada is not USC or Texas, but there was a lot of love in Huskerville on Saturday. Not as much as in North Carolina as I'm sure there were some cousin luvin going on in them there hollars.

I know there's a couple of Husker Fans who care so thanks for the thread and indulging me.

One of them went to my old high school

North Carolina looked pretty good as they start the Butch Davis era. And my other favorite Southern Cal rolled as expected, I hope it is the first step towards a trip to New Orleans, and another national title for them men from Troy.

Brandenburgh or Lawrence?

Lawrence .... he didn't even play LB in high school. He played QB and safety I believe

He comes from a pretty talented family.  I believe his brother is the 3rd string QB at KU.  Probably the reason he is at Nebraska or he would be a Jayhawk :'(.  Their was an article in the paper here last year about the brothers.  How they always went to KU games when they were younger had dreams of playing together there.  Even though Blake is a whole lot better, I think he was getting sick of always living in his older brother's shadow.  He should be a JAYHAWK!!!!!! :'( ;D :)  I doubt his brother ever sees the field at KU.

Im just happy Reggie Ball is actually gone. Like Senile said, i was expecting a win but not a 30pt win.

Well, my WVU Mountaineers won an expected game against Western Michigan 62-24.  Now onto beating Marshall University next week.  The real test will come against Louisville & Rutgers.

I couldn't believe that Michigan upset!  I wonder if Michigan will even stay in the top 20.  I like to see the little teams pull an upset off sometimes.

Man, I love college football.  So much talent!  It seems like in the NFL, it's all about who makes the most money or uses the most steroids.

He really wrestled with his decision between KU and NU.  We got a heck of a football player.

This was a very interesting week in football.  First off, my Sooners beat down NT, which of course was expected.  But then I tuned in to the Texas-ASU game.  (I live 15 min. from the ASU campus, got season tickets).  I highly applaud their efforts for the game.

GO INDIANS!

BOOMER SOONER!

WOOO PIG SOOIE!

but most of all....

HOOKEM' DOWN!

So is he actually playing??

I thought he would need to red shirt a year to put some weight on.  As I recall he was only a few lbs over 200??  Pretty small for big time college program??

Rod, your Huskers looked good this weekend as did KU.  I know the first week doesn't necessarily indicate where a team is going, so we'll see.  I'm looking forward to next weekend.  Hopefully, MU will display a running game against Ole Miss.

Ed, where is the MU/Ole Miss game?

KU  Lawerence is getting time on special teams and a play or so late in the last game.  I thought they would redshirt also with the depth and seniors we have at the position.  Evidently his play merits playing time.  We had 8 true freshman contribute which has to be appealling to recruits.

has anyone heard any news about the Tennessee player Xavier Mitchell who they had to carry off on a stretcher
