College: Learning to cook

Well, this year has been my first year living at school in an apartment so I've been picking up some new things, you know, the regular cooking, cleaning, etc... now that no one does it for me anymore.

Today's lesson: Cook the food, not the silverware.

My knife, after I left it on a pan of pork tenderloin that I put back into the oven after checking its progress. It was melted to the pan and mushy, almost like a sponge. I had to scrape it off the pan which I am probably going to have to throw out along with the knife anyway.

Normally, this story would be embarrassing, but I think it's pretty darn funny too. The pork tasted ok, so I'm happy.  :-[ ;D

Thats great  ;D

I live off microwave burrito's, frozen Tyson chicken with BBQ sauce, and Vitamin Water in between classes. No real cooking for me. The microwave is the greatest invention ever.

normally me and my roommates eat mostly microwave stuff but we try to eat some real food once in a while. Mostly marinated chicken, pork, etc with rice, potatoes, veggies, etc... That happened to be the case tonight...

Since I'm in the dorms I'm limited on cooking apparatus. I usually eat at the dining hall but I've been living off alot of Special K bars and fruit cups. It's pretty darn tough to eat healthy when you're a busy on-the-go guy in a dorm hall!

Great you are learning to cook.

Remember to also learn how to sew, make the bed, do laundry and clean house, especially the bathrooms.

Just follow the receipe's directions and after a few months you can start adding spices and make other changes to improve the meal.

Bon Appetite!

Moral of the story: set all cooking utensils (knives, forks, spoons, spatulas, etc.) beside the stove on the counter.

Good story though! You are doing a better job than I. The only thing I can cook is breakfast stuff. As far as dinner goes, I help my mom with my fav. dish: Chicken and Dumplings, she boils the chicken and I work on the dumplings  ;)

But as far as steaks, tenderloins, ribs, and other BBQ or Grilled items go, I leave that up to my mom and dad lol!!  ;D

It's good to hear that you are learning to cook.  I had to learn such skills out of necessity.  My mom died of cancer when I was 17, and my dad didn't help alot, so I was left on my own to learn such domestic skills.  Since being married, it has been beneficial to be able to share those duties with my wife.  I feel our relationship has thrived due to such things.  Keep it up!!

Next time, DON'T EAT THAT MEAT!!  PCB's are released when plastic is burned and get into the food.  I learned a bit about this when our house burned down.  Twice.

All food has to be thrown away because of the plastics in the house that burned. EVERYTHING, opened or not.  Same for Booze, temps can change it to poison.

Be careful!!

Cooking is great,

just remember NO METAL IN THE MICROWAVE

Heck I still do that now occasionally LOL

Sometimes its easier to let the pan and the plastic cool first.  sometimes you can get it all up with a pull instead of scraping.

I've always followed that rule.  Purchased a new microwave a couple of weeks ago and the manual surprisingly stated that you can use FLAT pieces of foil.

I have not tried it yet and probably never will, but that one caused me to  :-? .

Cooking can be fun, it is for me!

Here are a couple of suggestions to get started:

1. Buy a Betty Crocker Cookbook

2. Read through a recipe before starting

3. Measure ingrediants precisely

4. Start with something that interests you, manly and not too complicated. Meatloaf with mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans and rolls; chili; ham & beans with cornbread, that kind of stuff.

You will be surprized, chicks dig it!

Good luck!

8-)

Wow I guess next time I go to a party I'll whip out the "handy dandy" cookbook and cook up some women  No pun intended

the ladies do love a man with a big cookbook lol  ;D :o

LOL thats great

I cant believe I'm posting a recipe, but this one got me through college and my need for meat in every meal:

Easy mac'n'cheese with a sausage chopped in cooked mixed in.  Good stuff, and takes ten minutes!

We've got something like a George Foreman, but bigger. Most of the time I can make some pretty tasty stuff, nothing fancy or too difficult, but it tastes good. The other day we had jerk marinated chicken, red beans and rice, and garlic peas and mushrooms. The rice and the veggies were just microwaved out of bags, but they taste pretty dang good. The chicken was awesome. Marinating chicken is one of my favorite things to do. It's very easy to do and it tastes great.

LBH, I thought about melted plastic fumes, but me and my roommates were too hungry.  ;D Next time I'll be more careful though.

BTW, I'd like to recommend Bird's Eye Steamfresh Vegetables, especially to guys like me in college. It's really easy to leave vegetables out at school but these are really easy to make and they actually are delicious. You just microwave them in the bag for a few minutes and then pour them out. That's it. Give em a try, they make your school meals feel more like mom's.
