cool pictures. I've never seen a gar close up.

Cool fish, how did it fight?

lol i have to say that is probably one of the worst fish to catch on a lucky craft, besides a musky or pike lol.  I hope it didnt mark up your lure

Cool catch there - living up to your name too  ;)

Nice one man! Catch these guys by accident alll the time.Especially in the hot summer when they are cruising near the surface.

For me they seem to be especially fond of small spinnerbaits and topwater poppers.

Yeah they are really slow attackers and usually don't catch up to the lure, usually they will just follow it in, but this guy was fast enough. They don't really fight hard.

man i hate gar. i always gig them nasty things >:(

Parks department was doing a randome catch check one day and gave out citations to people who tried to keep the gar they caught in their lines.  But those gar can easily reach 3 and up in length here in Fl.  Be carefull throing them back form the docks also!

Fun catch though tanks for sharing the pics :)

Vic

I hooked into one between 25 and 30lbs but it finally straighten my hook out on my jerkbait. That was a fun fight.

They are extremely hard to hook... weve had em take live shiners sideways... I heard a rumor on how to hook them perhaps you can confirm it.

Guy said to have nylon twine on a lure cause they spin when hooked.  Did yours spin?  also I have no idea to put twine on a lure, but thats what I heard.

I don't know, I've heard guys use string/twine on their lures because their teeth will get tangled up in it. The hooks pretty much never penetrate through their mouth because they have such tough skin.

This one didn't spin, he fought like seatrout or something where they don't fight hard, just head towards piling or another structure in the water

If I'm just out fun-fishing I love to catch gar. Awesome fight for me. I would love to go on a guided alligator gar fishing trips and catch one of those 150-200lbers
