Going to try and start brim fishing

Featured Replies

hey guys Im going to try and brim fish but dont really have any tackle for it. What kinds of lures/live baits and other tackle should i get along with any tips or techniques. thanks

Get some small hooks, ice jigs, road runners and then get some wax worms, small minnows, or crickets. Float some live bait on small hooks or ice jigs under a cork around any kind of structure and have fun. You can fish the road runner in deeper water with a yo-yo type retrieve. You can also try some small inline spinners.

Hope this helps.

Bream fishing is the best, you should go to your local bait shop and buy some Cricket Hooks. Trust me they say cricket hooks on them. Wal-Mart carries them as well.

Slip a small bobber on and put a live cricket on a cricket hook and you'll wear em out.

I've also caught them on wax worms, Catawba worms, also you can try for the biggin' on a jig head with meal worms. Main thing is they love live bait, not so much night crawlers though.

Good luck, remember to watch out for those spines. !!1

Whatever about nite crawlers. Cut them night crawlers into about 10 pieces and they'll eat them up. You can also catch them on just about any insect imitation or live insect or larva.

I think you will soon find out that bluegill are a blast to catch on light tackle. I have been most succesful with live bait; such as, crickets, wax worms, and catawpa worms. If you want to go with a lure, you should try a bettle spin or small crank.

My favorite way to catch bluegill is with a flyrod using a round denny popping bug; especially during the mayfly hatch  :D

If you are serious about brim (or "bluegill" as we yanks call them) fishing, you need try flyrodding for them.  It's a riot.  A casting bubble a few feet up from the popper or bug will work too-just not as fun.

Crickets are probably the best live bait around but garden worms (not nightcrawlers) work great too.  And wax worms.  I've never tried catalpa worms but they seem like they might be difficult to come by.  Don't know about that.

You can catch them on a lot of baits, but crickets are a sure-thing.

If you're geared up for it, use ultra light. No heavier than 4# line. Bait is fine, but you'll get lots of REALLY small ones. The larger more aggresive ones will tear up small inline spinners and 1/16oz jigheads with anything rubber on them.

Laugh if you want, but large gills and the like are a BLAST on light tackle. If they grew to the same weight as a LMB, they would be the better fight by a mile.

You gotta use light gear to get the best fight out of them. You'll get bored quick if you use bass sized gear.

Get an UL rod with 4 lb. mono line, and some #6 and #8 circle hooks. For bait I either use crickets under a small float, or 2" plastic grubs without a float. You can also catch them on a fly rod (probably the most fun way to catch them).

Hey NCthompson,

What all the others guys said is true. Be they bream, bluegill or panfish (the name don't matter, they all taste good and are really fun to catch) Try some Mepps or Aglia spinners in the 1/16th oz. weight. White and silver has always been a good one for me. Use 4# test line and have a ball. Lighter line gives better action to the lures.

Have fun.

Tom

If you happen to be looking into ultra light gear, consider this reel.

It can't be beat, especially for the price. I recommend the 4725 size.

I've had mine for over a year now, the thing just goes and goes.

You can get them pretty much anywhere, I just linked to BPS to show it to you.

Yozuri Snap Beans are a fun way to catch gills.  Crickets are great and catch the big ones but waxworms seem to work just as well.  Truthfully you can catch then on just about anything...bubble gum, saltwater taffy, zara spooks, even caught one once on a piece of tree bark
