Looking for fishing pliers that wont break the bank. Nothing fancy, just for taking out hooks.

I made the mistake of buying a set of Mustad "Heavy Duty" stainless forceps. Took them out of the package, put them in my tackle bag, and they were broken when I took them out. > I'd bring them back but I can't find the receipt.

Go to your local auto parts store and grab a pair of $1 needlenose pliers out of the plastic tub at the register. When they get all rusty or break, throw them away.

Any old needlenosed plier work fine.  I got an 8" pair for getting way down deep in the fish's mouth.  Small 6" ones are too small for me.  

I like the Rapala pliers I got with a Rapala rebate earlier this year.  They aren't the highest quality and they don't snip line very well (kit included line cutter also), but the nose is very long & good for getting at deep hooked baits.

Do not get the Rapala pliers, at least not the ones that come with the side cutters in a package.  First, they are not well made. The jaws don't mesh well and the cutter is not ground evenly.  Second, the plastic guards,

they look like a hilt on a knife, get in the way.  I had a small bass inhale a hook deeply, not gut hooked, and the guards prevented me from getting the pliers into his mouth.  The cutters that came with the pliers, useless!

Big gap in the cutting edges when closed.  Go to Sears.

craftsman needlenose pliers for me

I carry a Gerber Angler's multitool everytime I go fishing.  It has longer needlenose pliers than most multitools and they can be opened with a flick of the wrist.  They also have cutters that can cut most fish hooks, scissors, knife, a file, and a couple other tools.

I just lost my pliers on the way home left them on the boat and took off.  They used to be Shimano nicely rapped in blue cord (non slip).  They don't make them anymore.  Now I am stuck with my 1.99 walmart pliers. :-[

I have tried several different fishing pliers and have not like them especially the high prices. My favorite are these $4 needle nose ones I buy at the PX. They have blaze orange handles so they are very hard to lose! Now they will develop surface rust in like 5 seconds but they work really well.

This is an awesome tool and the scissors will cut braid like its butter too! Lifetime warranty too!  

i use the rapala pliers w/ the carbide cutter. I love these pliers. The never rust and work great, and have the split ring tip on the front which is helpful as well.

Although I should say i loved these pliers. Just last week I was fishing with them in my pocket and the lanyard hanging out. Went to do a roll cast and caught the lanyard with the rod handle and flung my pliers right out of my pocket about 15 feet away. One thing is for sure, they definitely don't float.  ;D

Multi tools are the only way to go. It's like wearing a mini tool box on your hip. Always prepared.
