Is Ike a little over the top?

Recommended Posts

I cant be the only one that thinks Ike is too much sometimes.  Meet the guy before and he is very nice.  Just have always felt this guy saw an opportunity to be a star by fist pumping and yelling.  Its paid off big time.

Just always been told to be quite while fishing and this guy goes nuts.  Maybe its just me. Either way the guy can flat out fish.

sometimes i think hes a little to much, but then again ive never fished for $500,000. I do miss the break dancin though. Id like to see him and skeet have a dance off for a bonus $10,000. I think ike could take him.

I think Ike is very entertaining. He is definatly not your typical bass angler.  But he knows how to fish and loves fishing and I think that is why he gets so excited.

I think he's a monumentally talented fisherman, however, when he starts all the screaming, he's quite obnoxious.

I think it is amazing. I think it is absolutely awesome how psyched he gets when he boats a fish. You can feel the passion he has for the sport. I personally love it...

Let's see.... Barking at fish? Spitting? (Watch the final - Have to see it to understand) Drove/Stabbed his pliers into the deck of his boat. He has problems.....

yea I was gettin a little worried at his pretty calm demeanor in the classic up untill he yanked those two hawgs at the end, it bet those last two bass were scarred for life  :P...I think that kind of excitment great tho. BTW how does Ike get into many pro level tournaments??? One minute hes in the top ten of a Stren Series in NY, half an hour later hes yanking hawgs in an Elite in Alabama, and on his way to lunch in between he qualifies for the FLW tour event in PA. I swear theres two or three of him :D

I did watch the final. He got river water in his mouth... could get sick from the bacteria I would spit it out too.

Over the top, no.  If it were me fishing in that big of a tournament, I would be screaming just as loud and be as excited as he is.  So what if he isn't the stereotypical fishermen.

Right... whatever...

Now justify/explain the pliers into the deck....

, he should scream louder, if any of you dudes got yelled in face by him. I'm sure you would have a different point of view. YEAH!! WOOOOO!!!!!

LOL, there would definitely be a different point of view going on.

He would probably be looking up at me through a couple feet of lake water....

Someones either been drinking the Kool Aide or the river water. He's a great angler, no doubt, but the spitting was just WAY over the top.

No. Not at all.  Let me put it to you this way: I was fishing in a BFL as a coangler,  had missed a couple fish throughout the day.  The family and kids were coming to watch weigh in, I was staring a donut.  Then, wham, I land a 12 incher!  (1.5 bls)  I screamed and wooted like I was out of my mind.  d**n near broke my boater's hand as I slapped a high five.  I was PUMPED! and we are not even talking about Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars on the line...

In fact, I go crazy when I hook a big one on my local pond when no one is even looking, and I bet Ike does the same.  It is just how you are wired...  Some people just get really amped up and are not low key....  ;D ;D  I relate to Ike's emotions, and because of it, he is my Favorite angler.

he is a very talented fisherman. i have no issues with him getting excited on his own boat catching fish. even when he went on a tirade and kicked the american flag off his boat. i didnt get mad at that. i am sure most were like that was disrespectful. the issue was he wasnt thinking and acted purely on emotion. to see that many folks not understand this and making such a big comotion about it along with media over hype is sad. imo...he is a true american angler. if you dont like him, dont watch him :)

He is the OPPOSITE of the TRUE AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL angler.

I do understand him. Having worked with troubled kids.. I understand very well.

Everyone is emotional to some degree. Skeet, KVD, CLUNN...all of them are emotional. Some choose to contain it, to a point, and some dont.

IKE's emotions show elements of violence. Demonstrations of domination over a smaller object/fish. Violent outbursts followed by him breaking equipment. Displays stabbing motions, barking, taunting.... I could go on but you all have seen it.

I don't he is over the top. It brings something new to the sport. Some of you older people might not like it, but I do. So what if the guy gets really excited and pumped when catching a bass. I would be that crazy too if 500,000 dollars was on the line and the fact you have to impress your sponsors in order to keep them. I rather watch Mike yell "Never give up" twenty times when catching a kicker, rather than some pro with no personality at all. It reminds me of the movie Happy Gilmore. Happy was a outrageous pro with some crazy ways. At first everybody was hating on him, but eventually people realized it was good TV, so the promoters liked him since he brought more viewers.  8-)

WOW. take it easy there pavlov. you mean to tell me you wouldn't get chapped if your livewell broke and you were in contention of a professional tourny? you wouldn't be chapped if you lost a big fish in the BASSMASTER CLASSIC?  some guys show their emotions differently. just because you work with troubled kids doesn't make you a psychologist. i have had many kids come through my classroom with those same emotions you described who turned out just fine.

Not over the top, just trying to change the stereotype of bass fishing. No longer slow paced and a Hick type sport.

Yeah, yelling, screaming, and making yourself hard to ignore is definitely a step above being a hick.   ::)  Not that I have any trouble with Ike the way he is, but I tend to prefer a quieter, respectful demeanor.  However, one can show respect and get excited at the same time.  He is what he is.  Some people like it and some people don't but none of us can read his mind and know his intent, good or bad.

I do not think that he is "over the top" I do think that he is great for the sport and that at least some of his antics have some element of theatrics.

Was there this much talk on this site last year about the guy that did NOT win??

People are really talking about steroids and everything that is wrong in baseball and some are leaving the sport as fans.  Just because people are talking about him, doesn't necessarily make it a good thing.  ;)
