Spinnerbaits or Bust

Featured Replies

I have been trying to learn spinnerbaits as a new technique. Over this Thanksgiving holiday, my middle stepson and I were out on Bull Shoals with conditions that say spinnerbaits. Therefore, I broke them out (put on a white shad colored one) and by golly; I finally got a nice smallmoth to follow my spinnerbait back to the boat. No, he did not hit and we had to go in for the wife called that the Thanksgiving Meal was almost ready but after weeks of "am I doing something wrong, at least I have seen a sign of hope! YEA! I may learn this spinnerbait thing yet.

I would say spinners are my go to's.  I find changing my retrieve makes the world of differance.  Slow it down, let it die, speed it up a tad after a missed strike ect.  Size, color and weight make it a suscessful bait or not.

There are some excellent articles on this web site about spinner baits to add to them I suggest Kevin VanDam's DVD Proven Spinnerbait Techniques as a Christmas present.

Catts right, vandams proven spinnerbait techniques is a great dvd to learn how to use spinnerbaits and bass pro sells it in a pack of 3 with pitching to heavy hitters and stratigies for changing conditions for the same price as a single dvd.

When a fish follows your spinnerbait like that I've found that stopping the retrieve suddenly sometimes generates a strike. Other times a temporary acceleration triggers the strike. I've noticed that adding a plastic trailer has definetely increased the effectiveness of my spinnerbaits.

I caught most of my fish this weekend on spinners trailed with a rick clunn's firecracker trailer. That imho is a gorgeous trailer, perfect for clear water. ;)

You'll get them papa

When I lived on Long Island, spinnerbaits were a confidence lure for me.

Down here in FLA I do not do nearly as well.

The only time I feel confident in a spinnerbait these days is when there is a decent wind blowing.  I'll cast accross a point from a couple of different angles and different depths.  If the sky is a little overcast so much the better.

Good luck and have fun.

That's the proto-type that was used as the working model in designing and constructing the Clinton Library. The finished product is in Little Rock Arkansas:

I am in the same boat as you are Paparock. I can't seem to catch a fish on a spinnerbait to save my life. Doesn't seem to matter what size, retrieve, what the conditions are, color, what kinda blades, doesn't matter. For some reason I just can't catch fish on 'em.

The best way to learn how to fish spinnerbaits (or any other style of bait) is to go fishing and take only spinnerbaits with you. Trust me. It works    :)
