Adding scent to stored plastics

Featured Replies

I have a small amount of Yum scent leftover and getting ready to pack up my plastics for the winter.  Would adding the Yum be a good idea?  It appears to be oil based scent so I would think it wouldn't dry out the plastic.

I wouldn't...Every time I ever tried it, It would make the baits "bleed" and lose color if it was in there for a long time (winter months). I would personally try to seal the bags and get as much air out of them as possible and then store them in a cool dry place.

I have not had a problem after 7 months.

In my experience, it will leak out on down the road and make your bags all greasy.  Plus, I like to apply scent after I rig a bait, so I don't get my hands all nasty.

I've been using Gulp Alive and when I have no minnows left in the bucket but I still have the scent in it I'll throw a couple senko's and a couple of tubes in it to soak up.

I think I'm going to keep the yum seperate and just add a drop of mineral oil to my plastics to keep them from drying out.  It's the green Garlic LPT scent so i've heard of this staining things green as well.

I wouldn't.  I use it on a chatterfrog and other lures.  It does not stain or discolor the skirt which may be silicone, but it does stain the frog legs.

The lure comes with two trailers.  One is chartreuse with glitter, and the other is chartreuse in the body, but the legs are solid green.

After a half dozen or so spritzes, the once chartreuse legs take on a golden/orangy hue.  It actually seems to fish better when the color changes.  It may be the color, or a saturation of the scent.

Unless you are willing to risk a color change, don't do it.

By the way, at least some if not all of those garlic dyes, dips contain acetone.  Prolonged exposure to the acetone might cause the plastic  to deteriorate.

I added scent to my plastics one year and didn't get into them for a while after that.  When I finally did, the box I had them stored in was a nasty soaking wet mess and the plastics seemed to have gotten soft cause some of the worms were mushy.  I threw them all out and started over, and vowed to NEVER do that again.  Don't remember what kind of scent it was but I don't do that with any scents now.  Only apply to fish with it and that's all.

I have been using Fish Formula/Fish Formula II since it was invented 25 years ago and I add 100% pure Anise to it. Never in those 25 years has Fish Formula/Fish Formula II caused any discoloration, softening, or any other adverse condition. I order my plastic by the 100s and then divide them into 25 packs in Ziploc bags first adding a couple drops of Fish Formula/Fish Formula II.

Adding scent to the bag is the only way to use JJ's, it's too messy

to use when you're out. I dip about have the baits in a bag which

covers all baits stored.

Plastics dry out?   :-?

I have bags of plastics that are going on 15 years old that are in the exact same shape and texture now as they were when I bought them(?)  And they're just plain plastics without any scent or impegnation.

I don't know either...I still have some GYCB Senkos from '97 that look, feel and smell just like they did then. I think Raul has posted 25 year old soft plastics on another thread. As far as I can tell, they never get "old".

Do you not keep your plastics in the original bag ? If you do you do not need to add any thing and if you don't , why ?

I've got about 15 bags with only one or two plastics left, looking to consolidate when I pack up for the winter.  I'll probably use some original bags if they look in good shape.  Some are now close to 7 months old so they've taken a beating and may have small holes.   I was thinking of adding the scent to just be able to toss the bottle, but also thought they might dry out a little.  I read about the mineral oil here.  I figured a drop of that wouldnt' hurt.  Some of the plastics have been fished, some unused.

I do it and it works great, just saves a bit of time when you wanna have the yum sent on the lures, you don't have to spar it on every so often.

I would also think that it would also seep in to the bait when it's in the bag.
