Hard plastic swimbait??

Featured Replies

I am new to swimbaits but I was told that they were good for winter fishing for largemouth bass. I purchased a tru-tungsten 7 inch  gold tilapia. I am interested to see how it works. I have 15 lb test seaguar line and a 6 ft falcon medium-heavy rod. is this an okay setup or do I need something else. I am also going to lake fork this upcoming weekend. Could yall give me some advise. Thanks!

you're probably going to need a heavier rod to throw that bait.

Not enough rod. Baits ok. Paint sucks. Get stronger line. Have fun.

7'6"-8' Swimbait rod rated for at least 4 ounces. 25lb.

You can "get by" with a hvy flipping stick with smaller swimbaits but the true gill is a medium sized bait. If your looking for an inexpencive rod, look at the Okuma swimbait rods. get a hvy. It will handle the bait fine. 20lb test MINIMUM. 25 is a better choice. I have heard mostly good things about the true gill it should get bit but like Fourbizz said the paint is known to chip. shouldnt effect you getting bit though.

soo basicaly I just agreed with everything FourBizz said  :D

Hogseeking,

Welcome to the forum.  Keep those questions coming.

Sometimes you will have to wait for a reply.

But a reply will be forthcoming.

And it is usually a good answer to your query.

Be sure to post your results in the "Outing" section of the forum, even if you do not catch anything.  We want to know how your gear worked and if the bait is worth the investment.  :D

What were to happen if you use a smaller rod. 6ft. mh action- 1/4-3/4 lure weight. 15 lb flcarb line. just wandering :-/

Lose big fish, lose expensive bait, break rod.

I can almost guarantee you would break the rod/tip... the line may hold but for how long?

The gill without the balls added is 2oz, so I would at least get a rod rated to 3oz.  Bait works well in the water and does some of the easiest 180's in the water.  I've thrown it on a 7'10 H BPS extreme rod when I didnt bring my swimbait rod and it was fine, but I wouldn't go less than a 3oz rating for that bait.

X infinite..... don't do it!!!!!

I asked a similar post a little bit back, and I can say I learned a thing or two, the rod action is too light, and rod is too short. Look on the rod and see what the recommended weights are for the rod. If I'm right, the lure will be to heavy. The rod could break, if you make one wrong move.

Try getting a 7' rod or longer, and that can handle heavy lures, and like they said, 20lb at least, 25lb at best.

Good luck!
