Heres a question about fishin deep.  Ive caught quite afew lately on a jig, weighted husky jerk, and carolina rigged baby 1-, but I have been lookin to try something else since I know fish are there.  The water I am fishing drops from a small island slowly to 7ft, then rapidly into 20-25ft then about 15 yards out from that from 25-45.  There are fish scattered REAL close to the bottom, a few maybe being 2 ft off, mostly between 1st and 2nd drops.  Water clarity probably 8-9ft, and some flattened out hydrilla mats go down at least half the way down the drop off probably come up  1-2ft off bottom.  What technique would you use in this situation.  Fishing a jig gets old cause your always waitin on it to get there, then you pick up up and it drops forever cuz the drops so quick, making it hard to maintain bottom contact. Have you tried drop shot?

I fished a fluke yesterday in 20 ft of water and it was very effective.  Talk about waiting forever though.  I would say each retrieve took about 5 minutes.  I really don't like waiting that long, but it has been productive for me.

Never really fished a dropshot, my have to try that sometime.  KU... how did you weight the fluke???

Try a jigging spoon.  Gets deep quick and is a great cold water bait.

Drop Shot!!!!! it is a great clear water, deep water technique.

Ok so looks like Ill try a dropshot... what yall recommend to dropshot... Biggerbaits, small baits? Natural color, bright, dark? Simple like a stick worm or more complex like a creature bait?  water is around 47 now

Small to medium sized soft jerkbaits, use colors that fit the baitfish that are in the area.

Smaller baits and very soft and weightless

You might try throwing a Rat-L-Trap parallel to the second drop off, count it down till it gets close to the bottom, then try different retreves until you find what they want.  tight lines and good luck with what ever you try.

Exactly what I was going to say! Jigging spoon should be productive if the drop off is that steep. You can fish all levels of it which I don't think you fish as well with a drop-shot!

This is the absolutely best structure for a Gitzit. The tube sinks fast so you spend most of your time in the zone. Fish it like you image a crawdad would crawl. Drag it slowly along the bottom and over rocks, let it freefall over ledges. If you can get away with it, I recommend the traditional rig: leadhead with an exposed hook.
