Boo
We have an Academy and a new Gander Mountain plus 4 walmart supercenters here. I love capitalism!!! Academy was selly Rat-l-traps for $2.99 each until Gander opened up. Now Academy dropped their price to $1.87, man what a hell of a deal. But was in Gander saturday, they dropped their price to $1.86!!!!!!!! Like I said before, I love capitalism!!!!! ;D
mullman
Gander Mountain and Walmart are within about 5 miles of each other. I will always go to Gander Mountain first unless the wife drags me into Walmart with her. Then I'll gravitate toward their fishing section while she does her thing. Pond-Pro
Selection wise: Gander Mountain. Price: Walmart The people that work at Walmart have no idea about the fishing stuff. Thats ok though because I know what I am doing. Walmart really comes in handy for me!
coldsteel
Dicks has alot of lures and a great selection but is...guess what....[glb][move]EXPENSIVE[/move][/glb] Wallyworld has the basics.... and the occasion good stuff at low prices ;D . I mean i got spools of berkly 12lb test at wal mart for 1$ each! (target sucks...they need to change their name or something!) ;D
soldier
Dick's just opened a new store nearby (7 miles), and all their stores had a great sale....Gamakatsu hooks for $1.25 a pack...also offered $10 off certificates for purchases over $25...can't go wrong. Agree w/ previous posts on Walmart...quick stop on way to the pond only.
sinker48
Dick's has the best selection in western New York State between the two. My personal choice is the local tackle shops even if you pay a little more. Good Luck! Sinker48
jappleseed4
dick's has better selection and more knowledgable staff
Wishin_I_Fishin
Dick's has the best selection in my area (kentucky) the local wal-mart has a very poor selection of anything fishing. But like a lot of people I prefer my local tackle shop..
MyKeyBe
The best selection? Probably Dicks. The one I shop at... Wally World hands down. When fall rolls around and the local Wally World has Kinami flash's for a buck (the older 7 packs even), Excalibur cranks for 75 cents, weedless jig heads for 50 cents, Gulp sinking minnows for a buck, etc, etc, etc. That's tough to beat! In my area the Wal Mart is right next to the Dick's (that's Dick's sporting goods, not who ever you thought when I said "Dick's") and I go to Wally once a week at least, Dick's maybe once a month. Another plus for Wally is the SUPER CENTER about 15 miles from me. I can get food and baits at the same place! I really think who ever orders the baits actually fishes! They sell horny toads, tiki worms, yozuri, owner hooks, and they just started carrying lunker city. No ozmo or sluggo's yet, but I am hopefull. ;-) Mike
SENKOSAM
Went to Dicks Mon. and noticed an improvement in selection and tackle organizaion, but not as good as the Dick's in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. As usual, no sales personal to answer questions, and spies to make sure you weren't stealing, when crouched down to get something off a rack at ground level. Unless the sales are stupendous, I won't shop there. Gander is only a half mile away and my local shop, 4 min., both excel in service, variety and sometimes price. Rattlinrogue
We don't have a Dick's around here,so I guess Walmart gets the nod.
xxSANDMANxx
I live 45 min from Springfield Missouri so Bass Pro it is unless we decide to go farm pond fishing then it Wal-Mart or a gas station.
Chris
I got a wally world just down the road from me and a Dicks about 30 miles away and a Gander Mountain about 100 miles away and a mom and pop tackle shop that blows all of them out of the water for lures that the main stream don't carry its 115 miles away. Guess which one I goto for my early year stock up? I'll give you a hint its only an small drive of 115 miles.
catnip
I hit Wallyworld today and was at Dick's yesterday. I noticed that Dicks has a better selection of hard baits while WW has a better selection of soft baits. As for price, WW had them beat on that. Selection of rods/reels/combos was much better at Dick's.
GobbleDog
In Orlando, all we have is WalMart and Bass Pro Shops. WalMart straight up sux for fishing tackle. I don't bother unless I need something for my boat. Bass Pro has a lot of good stuff obviously, but they don't carry everything. They quit selling Daiwa Capricorn reels and even when they did sell them, they only had certain models. Same with lures. They don't have the specific type or it's not in the right color. When it comes to buying specific fishing tackle (when I already know the model number), I've been buying stuff on-line through any number of fishing tackle web-sites. I get a much better selection and they always have all the colors.
PowerBass
Well, my local walmart is 10 minutes from my house, and the dicks is in easton, Cabelas is in hamburg, It takes 30 minutes to get to dicks about an hour or so to get to cabelas, local walmart has a good selection and cheaper than dicks, but cableas kills them both, on selection
RIfisherman
I afree with the rest of you who choose the local shops. On my way to the nearest lake is a good takle shop that has what i need and the owner is a good guy.
Super User Sam Posted April 10, 2005 Super User Share Posted April 10, 2005 I have found that different Wal-Marts have different levels of fishing items. In Virginia, the Luray and Suffolk stores are excellent while the City of Richmond Wal-Marts are not up to the same level as Luray or Suffolk. So check out different Wal-Marts as I think their stock of fishing items depends on the local fishing and the demand for fishing products. As for Dick's, some are better than others. The one at the Stony Point Fashion Park is poor. I go to three places for fishing tackle - Castaways, Green Top and Bass Pro Shop in Hampton. ZoSo71
I live within a 20 minute drive from 3 Dick's stores and 2 Wal-Marts...About 30 minute drive to Gander Mountain. Dick's has a decent selection If you can navigate all the clothes (Under-Armor (Sweat Shop Clothes)) And up 1 floor..Somewhere in between the Painball Department and Swimware.. But they can be a little expensive. Our local Wally-Worlds are less then great..Unless you need some Catfish Tackle or 5lb sinkers.. Gander Mountain is near my home lake and only go there if I need something quick at any cost.. Forget the Local Tackle Shops Way too Expensive unless they have something made local. I go where I can get the best deal. Enjoy ZoSo71 I go where it is cheaper!
chefxian
Wal Mart in Jax Florida sucks compared to Dicks. Wal Mart has no chance now
walkranger
Don't know much about Dick's. Walmart here in SA Texas will do in a pinch. Great markdown prices. Acadmey carries large selection. BPS has broken ground here and can't wait! ;D
rumz3
Unfortunately, I can't stand Wal-Mart. It's me, I'm sure, but anywhere that you can get tires, groceries and fishing lures...well let's just say the masses overcome the store. Bubba with his belly hanging out of his cut off tee shirt and Lulu with her own gut hanging out and spandex doesn't appeal to me. Hey, I'm a country boy, but at least I have respect in how I go out in public. Anyway, I do go to Wally World early or late and Dicks in my area doesn't always have the stock that Wally World has. bosnmate3
Around me there's a Dick's about 200 yds. from Walmart. and that's about it for fishing gear.So what Walmart has, ( not much ) Dick's meets there price. Ya know, $2.97 instead of $3.25.Everything else is prime retail price ($5.49 for a 1/4 ounce Rap skitter pop ), There really are not many local tackle shops around anymore, all the big guys killed them, so is the evolution of capitalism I guess, sad but true. Anyway, I do go to Wally World early or late That is an excellent point. I work late (this post is being made at 4:00 AM) and unless I absolutley have to, I will not venture to Walmart when the sun is out. Between 1am and 4am seem to be the best times to go. Just me, two other night owls, and the employee's.
