Flat crankbaits

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a few good ones and wondering what you guys use? What works and what colors you guys like using? Looking for a few ideas.

Looking to spend around $10 give or take a few dollars per lure.

Going to start fishing a lot more treble hook lures this year so i'm looking to fill a tackle box up one bait at a time per week till ice melts.

I couldn't find anything relating to flat crankbaits on search button.

The series I like to use are the Bomber Flat A's. They have been around for a long time, and have never steered me wrong. The best part is that they can be found for under 5 bucks a piece. Cant go wrong with that. 8-)

I've also used the Bomber Flat A, both the regular and deep versions, but I'm sure there are many good flat crankbaits.

Go Bagley...

Something special about that balsa wiggle that I can't put my finger on but does the trick.

WEC Zoom Hickey - phenomenal flatsided bait!

Spro Little John - one of the best production flatsides I have ever used

I can't wait to try out the Little John MD (or Dr. John as I call it)  ;D

Lucky Craft Flat CB MR is also a good choice

Flat A. Seeing a pattern?

Anyone remember Poe's RC1 and RC3 wood baits?

I still have several of each and they are killers!

I like the Rapala Flat DT7 and DT3. I caught a whole bunch of fish on them these past 2 years

Flat Maxx for me also. My deep flat maxxes (?) have not enjoyed as much catching as my shallow ones have. Great $5 bait that has good hooks and color choices.

I love balsa crankbaits more so than plastic ones.  Only drawback is balsa will break easily.  The best plastic flat side is the bandit flat maxx.  They are cheap and catch tones of fish.  The best color in the maxx is the threadfin shad.

cold water is when these baits shine in my experience.  I also throw them when I'm fishing behind other anglers too give the fish something different.

Normans thin, There is no better flat sided bait that imitates a blue gill better, Run it next to shallow cover all year long. Bomber flat A if your  trying to imitate shad

If you're going to be throwing it in any kind of cover, just chock up the $14.95 and get a Flat-Shad Sonny B. It'll kick the arse of half the flatsided baits from here to Japan. :)

Also - - drop "Big M" from this board a note.......he makes a killer flatsided bait called an M-Flat - - also an excellent bait in a variety of conditions.

Rob Cochran (aka JawJacker Crankbaits) makes a semi-flat bait with a little more aggression that I also dig the heck out of. It's called the "Model CK." Rob's quality and consistency are superb.

He also makes a Lil Petey-style crank that is excellent when fish are on tight baits.

Note - - there's some more but I'm trying to keep close to your ~$10 mark.......these cranks I just listed are all under $15 - - and I consider them an excellent value for what you're getting.

For cold water and sparse cover, the Flat A works very well, but IMO it sucks around brush, and I don't like the Little John around brush, either. It is very good at the same kind of gig as the Flat A, however.

I think for $10 you can still pick up a Bagley G-Force B-Flat, and it's well worth the money.

For the price you can't beat the BPS Nitro Shad Dancers. They have some SERIOUSLY sharp hooks and run true. Last spring during pre-spawn I caught 11 smallies on 11 casts all that were over 3 1/2 lbs. on the red craw color. I'm sold on these baits.
