tennis [elbow] anyone ??

Featured Replies

Like our current bassmaster champ has, i last year had"bass elbow"[tendonitis] to the extreme. It ruined one year of fishing for me.I'm 95% better now and am looking forward to our canadian bass season so i can fish again.I'm going to do a lot more side arm casts as opposed to pitching[my fave] all the time since that is what aggrevated it in the first place.I'll also wear my tendoitis elbow band even if my elbow feels fine, as instructed by doc.If anyone has ever suffered from this, any tips would be appreciated since i don't want to have this problem re-occur.BASS ELBOW SUCKS !!!

Welcome to the forum!

Apparently I have developed it as well-not too bad, but I wear an elbow brace when on the water. Fortunately it is in my left elbow and I am right handed. Haven't been to the doc with it yet, but that is coming. The neoprene elbow wrap I got seems to make a difference. I fished hard last Saturday, and it really didn't bother me, so the wrap was a good investment.

I never had a problen until I started pitching and flipping heavily, but I feel your pain :'(

Stretch your wrists and forearms as good as possible before fishing.  It should help.... it did for me.

Try wearing a wrist band as well as the forearm band.  Tendenitis in the elbow is usually an inflamation of the extensior tendons that go from the wrist to the elbow.  By limiting the bend in the wrist, you lessen the stress on the elbow.

i was originally diagonosed with tennis elbow..then had an mri that showed a tear in a tendon..go to a new doctor on weds....i live in the northeast so fishing is still a month or so away but the way my arm is now,i don't think i can cast much.  i'm afraid it's going to ruin a good part of the fishing season....maybe i'll have to start trolling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say that the best person to contact is a guy called "fishingelbow".  He has tendonitis in both arms.  He fishes from shore and specializes in long casts with baitcasters.  Just do an internet search with his name and you will quickly find him.

I were straps on both arms. And went to shorter softer tip rods and found out I catch more fish.

I'm also in the process of shortening and lightening my rods.  The heaviest outfit I use now is a 6'6" St. Croix legend elite in MH.  I use braided line on it so it has plenty of sticking power.  My other rods now are all 6 footer GLoomis'.

Pitching a lure involves muscles in the arm that we don't use much. Maybe using an underhand "sling shot" cast a bit more could help. Switching from one arm to another is a good idea.  Most of my fishing is siting down in a canoe so I don't pitch very much.  I use a backhand or forehand flip type cast.

Got it in my left eldow about 18 months ago and had a cortizone shot and did some rehab and all was well. Now I have it in my right arm, got a contizone shot and rehab. It is getting worse, I'm a mechanic and use my right hand all day. I lift wheels, used air tools, remove transmissions and so on. I'm married to a PT, she tells me it will never improve till i stop using it. Can anyone say disablity?

I had it very, very bad, I got the shot and know it is 95% better. I would highly suggest looking into a cortizone shot. Even thought the shot is exremely painfull 1 minute of pain is way better than a life full of agony.

I used to get a case of this every year when we started shrink-wrapping boats for the winter.  I had a 10 ft torch that would just destroy my forearms in a matter of a week or two.  Then, after all the boats were wrapped up, it would finally start to heal.  My doctor told me to just use one of those neoprene wraps and take Aleve for the pain.  Seemed to work pretty well, but only the rest I got after christmas made it truly better.  First time I walked in to see the doctor, he of course was a wisenheimer, "So, how long have you been playing tennis?"...

I fished for 7 hours today.  I put the elbow strap on and double wrapped my wrist to keep it from flexing too much.  I wrapped my left wrist as well, to avoid straining it.  I paid careful attention to how I was casting and rowing.  I'm happy to report that while still tender, I was able to fish all day pain free.  when I got home I iced it and took some motrin.

I may not have the distance or accuracy I had before, but Avid is back in the game

I developed this probllem through fishing and actually playing tennis.  It is difficult to change your technique to remidy the problem.  I purchased an arm band to place on my elbow while fishing and playing tennis.  I was amazed at the improvement.  The band puts tension on the tendon, I'm not sure what this does but the results were great.
