Useful tip

Featured Replies

This may be old news to some but I just  thought of this fix about a month ago. I'm 63 and these days seem blind as a bat, consequently I've been having trouble stringing my rods, expecially in low light situations. I now tie the end of my line to a simple pipe cleaner and then thread the eyes with the pipe cleaner. Works like a charm. Then I just cut the pipe cleaner just below where the line is tied, snip the line and I'm good to go. Hope this tip helps other folks with old age eyes.

Heck Im only 47 and I am nearly blind as a bat.

That is a great tip, thanks!

That's a very good tip but how do you fit the pipe cleaner through the eye of a hook? :-?

You might want to invest in a set of real glasses. Those Walmart readers do nothing but give me a headache.

What's wrong with getting a pair of glasses , it might solve your dilemma.

Great idea with the pipe cleaner. I use the needle threader, it works great. ;)

Back years and years ago (40) my close-up vision started going. My wife's opthomologist told me to get "cheaters" and see if they would work. Thankfully they work so far with no headache. My problem is having to change from sun glasses to "cheaters" and back all the time. They do have sun glasses that have a window for close-up in the bottom. Guess that's the next step :P...

BTW Don't have too much trouble with line guides but those eyes on the hooks get smaller and smaller and smaller ;D

In the past I've always held the rod vertically when threading the eyes.  Now I've discovered (duh) that it works better if you keep your rod horizontal during the procedure.  If you drop your line it won't run all the way back to the reel.

I'm thinking about hiring a 22 year old "girls gone wild" girl to be my first mate. :D

Yea!  Could be responsible for "stringing my line" ;)...

Harbor Freight Tools sells a lighted magnifier mounted to a weighted base with a gooseneck . I keep one of these on my boat. With the light I can see to tie lures , Carolina rigs, or bait rigs for catfish with no trouble. The weighted base is @ 6"X4" and uses AA batteries. The magnifier is @ 4"X3".     Happy fishing.

When I used to work at a sock mill we used those little blue plastic loop pieces used for dental floss to thread the thread through the needles. They always worked great for that and I can't see why they wouldn't work for hook eyes also.

There are little tools made to put sewing thread the the eye of a needle would work perfect for a hook, cost is cheap.

Yup, and not only that, they can even help in putting line through a baitcast reel's line guide too.
