Look at this fish scale and tell me if it was from a bass

Featured Replies

I was fishing yesterday with a Norman DD12 plug and this was on the rear treble hook when I reeled it in. The only thing in the lake I was fishing that is big enough to have a scale this size is a bass or a carp.  The carp in the lake do not have the green color like this scale has.  If it is a bass, is it as big as I think it might have been. Anybody know?

That's a big scale.  If it came from a bass then I suggest a bigger rod.

not a bass

Very posably a carp. Car come in different shades from orangw to silver, to green and everthing inbetween. Plus it depends on where on the body the scale came from. I have never seen a bass with that large of a scale or even close to that and I have seen some big bass. Nope not a bass

Nessie.  No doubt

Thank you  I have caught AND snagged big carp in the lake I was fishing...20-30+ pounds, so I know they are in there.

That's definitely a carp scale.....a local private lake that I used to fish had a problem with grass carp and we used to snag them with large trebles to get them out of the lake and into the field.....came up with plenty of scales like that in the process.

I'd say carp scale. It looks like some of the scales I've gotten from  the carp I've snagged with my crankbaits. They look like guitar picks.

Carp scales are usually more circular in shape than that.  They also do not have the ctenes that embed the scale into the body like the scale you have a picture of does.  Could possibly be from a big drum as well.

Definitely looks like a carp scale. Looks like it has that golden brown tinge to it.

Too big for a bass I would think.

Both the size and color suggests a carp
