Palamar Question

Featured Replies

In almost all of the drawings I've seen for tying this knot, it clearly shows a loop of line BELOW the eyelet of a hook, with the remaining line positioned slightly above this loop, but in front of the eyelet. I have seen drawings where all of the line is on the top portion of the eyelet like it would be for a Trilene Knot. So....whats proper? How do you get it to look like the majority of the pictures I've seen?

Thanks in advance :)

When I tie the palomar knot, I always keep the loop and the tag end above the eyelet and do not have any issues with knot failure (on mono, braid and fluro).

I agree with this.

x2 thats how I tie it, never had a problem yet.

X3, very easy to tie and no failure either.  Knock on wood.lol

I use it for everything except spinnerbaits and large cranks. For those I switch to the San Diego Jam Knot.

Agree with others, one thing I also check with the palomar is to make sure the two loops do not cross over each other like an "X",I'll retie if I get them crossed.

Thanks all, I'll just tie it and let it sit at the top of the eyelet. And, I'll watch crossing the lines too....

remember to pull the tag line only when pulling tight.

your line will be less likely to burn or kink.

Man, this completely messed me up! I thought you were suppose to pull the tag so the burnt piece gets discarded? Also, the video shows the loop that you bring under the hook shank staying under the hooks eye? I thought the loop should be above the eye with the rest of the know!?! Im all confused now!!!!!!!   >:)

I've tied it with the loop above the eye as well with no problems.

But, when that loop goes above the eye, and it is tightened, it will have a tendency to cut into the line it is around.

With it below the eye, and around the shank of the hook, it cannot exert the slightest cutting pressure on the rest of the knot.

Tie with everything on top of the eye. Never had a problem with it cutting in the line and yet to have any failure, I tie this knot 95% of the time. If  you wet the knot it doesn't matter which end you pull it won't burn, the only time I make sure to pull the tag end is when tying on mono so it won't kink up the line.

Guess I'm the only guy who has problems with this knot.  I think I'm getting the line crossed and it's causing a failure.  Can't seem to keep the lines parallel when tying.

Tucson,

When cinching up this knot, make sure that the loop that the hook went through tightens around the lowest part of the Knot and not against the main line.  That should help you out.
