In Pennsylvania it is 8-8.

 I fish both of these states mostly. I was just curious as to what the potential was for your state and what waters hold the best chance to overtake the current record. I feel that in both MD and PA the individual state records have a good chance of being broken in the next ten years. The fish have been healthy and the rivers are looking good. Although, the 6's have been fewer over the years in the Susquehanna. They are still there. I am all about getting out of the routine of fishing where I always fish and searching out new water in old water, ya know? Also, the longer, warm weather periods I feel will up the chances. Where do you think the next world record will come from? in which I think would have to be 12lbs, correct me if I am wrong.

The record smallie in Michigan is 9-4. I would think that Erie has the best chance of producing the next state record. As far as the next world record, I think roadwarrior lives in the best state for that.

Kentucky lays claim to the world record smallmouth....11lb 15oz.  Caught in Dale Hollow, in 1955.  I believe RW once told me that Tennessee also claims this fish.......but I may be mistaken...on that....... :-/

Although Dale Hollow remains the odds-on favorite to produce the next World Record, the Tennessee River reserviors are viable candidates. Dale Hollow is the home of the two largest smallmouth ever caught (11 lb 15 oz & 10 lb 14 oz). Over the past five years, three 10 lb brown fish have been boated on the Tennessee including one in Alabama below Wheeler Dam (technically Wilson reservior) that challenged the State Record (10 lb 8 oz) and a fish my partner caught which I netted and weighed. This fish was caught in November 2004. If it is still alive and caught again, it could be the new World Record.

We know where it lives!

Well RW, the genetics certainly are there for the potential. My heart thumps at a six pound smallie. I cannot imagine a 10 and up. It does not take much to change the looks of a smallmouth in very short wt increaments. When you catch a 4 its a good thing but, you can tell when you first see them if its a five. A six looks huge to me, and when you get them to the boat, you can tell. The day the guy hooked a seven plus and broke him off in my boat boat, I knew what he had. That was a awesome fish. Believe it or not it was in middle of the summer and I did not expect a fish like that. If I had to take a real educated guess, I would say he was real close to 7-4 or 7-6. Even though Erie has potential, and Cali certainly does, I think the next WR will come from the south. Wilson, Kentucky, Pickwick, Dale Hollow, who knows? I would like to see you get him RW. I would like to hear the story of the day your partner caught that fish. Have a good year.

I believe the next WR will come from the south on the Tennessee chain.I think any of it's resevoirs has a shot at it if somebody can get it in the boat.

actually there was another 10lber out of Dale Hollow that weighed 10-9 caught in I think 1986

The Minnesota record is 8lb even.

My PB is 3lb 6oz, just caught today.  ;D ;D ;D

Tell ya what though, it looks a lot smaller in this pic than it did at the river!

I checked our state fish & game website and our state record smallie is 8.0 lbs even

VA's record is 8-1 caught in March of 2003 on none other than the New River, which has been hailed as one of the best smallmouth rivers in the country

IA - 7 lbs 12 oz.  (I had to check, I had thought it was over 8.)

I've had one follow a jerkbait to the boat that I think was easilly over 7.  I catch multiple 5-6 lb fish every year, so I know what they look like.  This one was in another class.  I tried every trick I knew, couldn't get that fish to bite...

MA's state record is 8-2 out of the wachusett reservoir, which also holds state records for white perch, landlocked salmon, and brown, lake, and rainbow trout.

nh record smallie is 7lb 14.5oz, caught in 1970

West Virginia's state record smallie is 9.75 lb. caught in the South Branch of the Potomac.

New Hampshire's state record is the smallie I'm catching this weekend   - just wanted to post so I can PM now.

Vermont's record is 6.81 pounds taken from Lake eden.   Our biggest is just a smidgen south of 4 pounds taken on lake Champlain.   We only catch and release.

West Virginia's state record smallie is 9.75 lb. caught in the South Branch of the Potomac.

That was David Lindsay's giant smallie, wasn't it?  It was a piggg!  I believe the #4 heaviest smallie ever caught.  I don't know if David Hayes smallie will ever be beat though.
