I caught my first smallmouth today. I've heard rumor of smallies in the Yadkin River but way farther upriver. Well now they are down towards my parts and I have smallie fever. I was fishing an outside bend of the river off of a rock bluff that dropped into 12 foot of water. Had a little current coming off of the bluff . I threw in a GP spider jig on a stand up head and hopped it down the edge of the bluff. Well here comes Mr. Smallie. Only 14in 3/4. Still a keeper but most of all a smallie. Took a picture and released. ;D

Another question. Before I caught this smallie. I caught a bass that Im really not sure if it was a smallie or a largemouth. I know it sounds stupid. But the fish was half solid green w/ a dirty white belly. It had a very small mouth. No stripes or markings of a smallie or a largemouth. It had largemouth colors but smallmouth head and mouth. Was it a smallmouth?????? With this being my first day I ever caught a smallie, could this fish have been a smallie? I didn't take a picture of that one. I threw it back but if it was a smallie it was bigger than the one in the picture. What do ya think?

Thanks!  My buddy at work seems to think it was a freak instance and I'll never catch another one in Yadkin River.  So apparently (to him) I caught the only one in the whole Yadkin River.

Many smallmouth have no markings, but they are generally the color (bronze) of the one in your picture. However, colors vary! Sometimes fish from the same water will be lighter or darker than others and a dark green tinge on the back is common.

Speaking of odd looking fish, I'm almost positive I caught a spot/largemouth hybrid, if thats possible. It was very green with a smaller mouth like a spots, and the pattern on it was similar as well only it was all different shades of green instead of a brown.

Smallies vary in coloration quite a bit.  Here's two caught from the same spot just a few minutes apart:

The fight was awesome I thought I hooked a 5 pound greenhead.  I was throwing the jig on 12lb P-line that I normally pitch docks with.  Mr. Smallie felt it neccessary to pull drag off like he was trying to dig a hole the through the river floor.  It was awesome.  I am definately infected with smallie fever.  FREAKIN AWESOME!  ;D

SMB are addicting here are some we caught on a cold day last march from shore. If there is one there are defenately more keep at'em!!

I caught a limit of spots in the river today but no smallmouth.  Here is the only spot I caught that had any markings on it.  These are spots right????

Instead of asking about the whole spotted bass stuff above.  I moved it to the "General Bass Fishing Forum" knowing this was the Smallie forum.  Thanks for help!
