Top water for smallies

In a lake setting, what has been your most productive top water lure for smallmouth?

Zara Spook

Pop-R.

Pop-R, they love to hit on the pause. Just do this early morning over a weed bed in the 8-12ft range.

Pop-r   and Zara puppy, both have them have worked great for me

Really any Heddon topwater bait works great for Smallies, but you can't go wrong with the tiny torpedo. Baby bass is a good color (as mentioned) as well as clear, black, and the frog color. The only one I don't have luck with is the silver torpedo.

Thanks guys.  The waterway I am fishing this weekend is extremely clear and I know drop shotting and tubes will be my go to (maybe a little Keitech action as well) but I wanted to throw top water for a bit early on.  Couldn't decided between a spook, popper or Rage Shad.

Main forage on this lake seems to be crayfish.  They are always spitting them up when we catch the smallies.  There are trout and perch as well.

Plastic popper with lipped shaved ala. Zel Rowland

"Baby" torpedo (has more commotion than tiny model)

Zara puppy (this and the torpedo are my 1st choice in calm water)

color is not important with any of the above baits... its the action and surface commotion that is important

Poppers, but buzzbaits, props, and spooks catch em too.

I've done pretty well lately with a Lucky Craft Rick Clunn Wake Action 3.5 in Copper Green Shad. Walking or drifting it in any current.

I tend to have good luck with the ol'trusty Chug Bug and Excaliber Bill Dunce I mean Dance spittin image!  ;)

How do you guys work your Pop R /poppers?  Fast?  Twitch, pause? etc...  By this, I mean, most of the time, what is your retrieve like--fast or slow?

After the cast, I let it sit for a good 20 to 30 seconds.  Then I go with the old standby- bloop, pause, bloop bloop, p......a......u......s......e......bloop, pause, bloop bloop, p......a......u......s......e.....

Those long pauses are about 10 seconds.
