first time ever fishing smallmouth need help

Featured Replies

I'm going on vacation to Gatlinburg, Tn this weekend and from what I hear smallmouth bass are the main type of bass in the waters there.  I have never fished for smallmouth and don't know a thing about them.  This may sound like a stupid question but I use Watermelon Seed and Junebug colored Yum Dingers when I'm fishing largemouth and was wondering if smallmouths hit them the same way or do I need a different setup for them.  The Tennessee law has a single hook limit and no live bait law so I am restricted as to what I throw out there.  What would Be the best recommendation if my Dingers wouldn't work?

Maybe try that dinger wacky rigged on a drop shot, if the dinger isn't producing a tube can be a great bait for smallmouth.

I caught my personal best smallmouth on a watermelon seed yum dinger. Trust me,you shouldn't have too much problems.Fish them like you would for a bass...same technique.

Pick up some tube baits too...smallmouth love em'. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1167358924/ Read that link...it'll help you!

Rage Tail Baby Craw:T-rigged, split shot or as a jig trailer;

Fat Ika (weightless & weedless) and MegaStrike MegaBug.

For deep humps and ridges, Ledgebuster 3/4 oz Single Willow

Blade Spinnerbait.

Tubes, single tail grubs, Hula Grubs and the Kreature are

some other options. If you like to drop shot, try a Slug-Go

and/or LFT Live Magic Shad.

I've had good sucess with shakey head worms and craw pattern cranks. Definately cant go wrong with some tubes.

This is what I would do great post

Do you usually rig the Megabug backwards? Like tail facing up?

I tried T-Rigging them weightless the conventional way and found that it takes a very long time for them to sink. I've personally had better luck sticking a frog hook in them and fishing them like a topwater frog.
