Does anyone scent their crankbaits? My friend proposed adding peanut butter to them, but I'm thinking more of a spray or something less sticky, lol.

I've never seen any need or reason to. Cranks are a reaction type of bait that I'm generally moving. Fish will see it and either hit it or not. I don't really think that they're going to sit there and analyze whether or not a crankbait smells "real."

True, but my buddy swears by scents, even on faster moving baits. Just figured I'd give it a shot. Doesn't hurt to try right?

Never hurts to try. Who knows, it just may be the ticket on any given day.

I only use scent when there fresh out of the package. I think fresh baits have a bad plastic smell to them. It don't seem like they smell like plastic after a few uses. So by the time the stuff wears off the bait wont smell like plastic. I don't know if it works or not. I guess its just one of them fisherman things.

I cant remember what its called but its in a arsole can with a black label. It also works good for jigs and soft baits. I have jigs that still smell like garlic from 3 years ago from that stuff.

I think I've seen that at Dicks Sporting Goods. I think they have a coffee flavor too. I'm going to go with the good ol' garlic smell. I am curious about the crawfish scents though, might be worth a try.

I've tried putting Megastrike on a few cranks, and it made them run funny, like they were out of tune.

99% of the time I don't add scent to crankbaits. The 1% where I do is in muddy water or when I am night fishing. When I fish under these conditions I bring the bait through the same area several times so I feel it helps.

Differant strokes for differant folks. Who knows you might catch a big cat.

I once scented up my crank with Yum Crawfish scent and I caught 5 fish to my partners 1 and we were using the same line and the same 200 series Bandit crank. Cant promise that the scent was the ticket, but it didnt hurt!

I started using Megastrike on them recently and have noticed a difference not in strikes, but in hooked fish to strike ratio. Why that is I have no idea. I don't know if the Megastrike has somehow lubricated the bait so fish get the hooks, ot they strike it that much harder because of the scent.

I do use Megastrike but not necessarily for scent, though it does have that affect. I use it to help it throught the weeds. I love to rip crankbaits over the top and the edges of weeds. I will apply it to the hooks also. It does help with keeping weeds off the lure and probably with short strikes. Mostly this is used as a lubricate. I will also add some to swivels on spinners baits for the same reason.

Conceptually, I don't think a spray would hold on a crank very well. I personally don't use scent on my cranks, but if there was a reason why I would it would be to help it get through weeds. Although I'm not really sure how much it would really aid in slipping through weeds better. If you are intent on trying it, go for something that will coat the bait and stick there hopefully for a while; something more substantial than a spray-on scent.

I use mega strike on every thing, I see fish follow baits all the time and I feel like leaving a scent trail can turn followers into biters. BTW since using mega strike like this I went from catching one musky a year to catching around 10 a year all while bass fishing the same lake.

Just me but I like to use scent on my crankbaits at times. Power team Lures has come out with a new scent called Hog Tonic that is some really GOOD smelling stuff. I know the crankbait is a reaction bite but I like to think that the scent is leaving a trail for the fish to follow, who knows.

Another possible use for using scents is the color, like spike it pens. Scent on a crankbait may or may not work but being able to add some color can help.

I bought a bottle of Gulp spray one time to try and it said on the bottle to spray it on cranks in addition to soft plastics. I never tried that though...

The only time I have was when I catch a slimy pike on it and I spray it after just to reduce the pike smell. Who knows if it works.

Sounds like Bang. When I first started fishing for bass, I sprayed Bang on all of my baits; it became a confidence thing for me.

I've been using this stuff call fishsticks. They are scents in like a chapstick form. You just rub it against your crankbait or soft plastic and it leaves no mess or anything.
