I just ordered a brand new Pflueger Patriarch spinning reel. Currently I've got a Stradic 2500 on my Loomis GLX BSR803. My backup rod is an St. Croix Avid. Should I put the new pflueger on my loomis for my main setup or on my backup rod? I know this is a great problem to have

Shimano has more ipt, but the patriarch is much lighter! Im a shimano man, but would use the patriarch on your main rod.......

I've actually been a die hard shimano man too but I've got a hook up at pflueger so I'm giving this a try.

I am in the same boat as you, every spinning reel ive ever owned has been shimano, but by handling the patriarchs I fell in love and I am considering getting a couple.

I'm a fan of the Pflueger spinning reels from the President on up. A lot of bang for your buck. I did just get a 2500 Ci4 Stradic 2nd hand NIB though. It will go on a finesse rod I'm building.

If you have a broken rod, the Flooger will match up well as a lure retriever.

For maybe the first time in my life I might have to agree with RW, probably the last too.....lol.

As much as I like Pflueger and I think the supremes have one of the better crank handles for small reels, the drags don't match up to a stradic. I think the Pflueger is fine for bass, but the stradic is better all around reel, also I do not care for any EVA knob, a deal breaker for me from the git go.

I was pretty impressed with the Pflueger's weight to begin with until I noticed that the numbers are a little deceiving. When comparing the two, the smallest of the Pfluegers (whatever model number it is) is a smaller reel than the Stradic Ci4 1000, smaller spool, less line capacity. Not saying it accounts for all of it, it may or may not, but the numbers are skewed in the Pfluegers favor.

Stradic 2500 Fi ??? I would really consider the 2500 CI4. I am impressed by the Patriarch though. Have to see how they hold up over the years.

I didn't even catch that. The Fi is pretty outdated (I assume it is anyway)compared to the new Flugger. I was comparing it to the Stradic CI4.

The FI isnt that outdated. Larry Dahlberg just had the FI field testing show as a season opener last year. As far as the Eva grips goes, Pure Fishings idea of a squarish more man sized grip is light years ahead of the nub on my 2500CI4. I treat my reels better than I treat anything else I own and it only lasted 3 trips before a Snook torqued the Eva off its spindle. Its a great bass reel but even with its beefy drag its outgunned by saltwater fish. The FI 2500 size, not so. Im impressed by the Patriarch just toying with it at BPS but even my freshwater is salty here so its a no go. Its full mag. construction is just as solid as any Shimano, so is the Supreme XT.

Larry Dahlberg pushes nothing but Shimano rods and reels, so I think his opinions are biased. Not saying Shimano isn't good, but there are certainly other choices. The fi is a super reel, but I don't think I would buy one again for saltwater. In reference to what 0119 says, I used my supreme 35 ( not xt) in saltwater for snook for maybe 18 months before moving it over to freshwater, with no ill effects whatsoever, I know some are negative on the mg construction.
