Crankin Reel Question

Featured Replies

I have read and seen where people use a low gear ratio reel when crankin like a 5.2:1 or 4.7:1! I have some places I like to fish that i need to crank 14-18ft and I tried a 5.2:1 reel and it seemed harder to reach those depths than when I use a 7.1:1 reel. Can anyone give me some suggestions. Thanks

A longer cast and lighter line will do more for depth control than the gear ratio. The advantage to lower gear ratio (inches per turn actually) is less fatigue for you and less stress on the reel.

I prefer 5.x for larger cranks and 6.x for medium \ small ones. As DVT expertly states, less fatigue on you and the reel is important. I like the control of a slower reel, for me its a confidence thing.

That and the Abu Winch is a monster for larger cranks...

The 7.1:1 also has a lot less torque than a lower gear ratio will.

Although most will probably disagree, I find that I catch more fish than most on cranks because I use a 5:1 ratio reel and they use 6 or 7:1 ratio. I think the slower reel gives you more control of the bait.

I agree I feel I can never reel to fast with my curado 5.0 : 1

I agree completely, I think I fish my baits too fast with a faster retrieve reels and can't feel my bait as well. With the slower retrieve I really feel what my bait is doing so I can get it down and keep it bumping along the bottom really well.
