What Do You Consider Gimmicky Lures/baits?

Featured Replies

Ever since the beginning of bass fishing we've all owned a "gimmicky" bait/lure from the Banjo Minnow to the Helicopter

What's a gimmick bait that works for you?

currently for me it's the Culprit Ultimate Topwater Shad

Nope, we haven't all owned a gimmick. I've never bought any of the "as seen on tv" lures.

Oh, and in before Irene rests for the eve.

Laser Lure.

Never have gotten a hit on one. :(

Is that that big crank bait with a flashing red light that ran for $20?

Yes, looks kind of like a Lucky Craft BDS 3 or 4.

What about the flying lure? Anyone remember that?

I actually caught fish on the flying lure. It had the marketing of a gimmick, but I can't put it there, with all the fish I caught on it. I still use keel weighted lures to get that gliding action.

Good thing I passed it up, lol. Believe me they try to recommend it to me!

one that has lots of advertising behind it

Anything on Roland Martins show.

The flying lure when I was a kid. But I actually caught fish with it. Thinking about it now I kinda wish I had some just to see if I could maybe catch a bunch of fish with it.

I caught a ton of fish on the 3" banjo minnow, but that was when I was a kid and didn't know what a soft plastic jerkbait was. Get a hitchhiker trailer holder and screw it into the front of a fluke, crimp that onto the bend of whatever hook you want to use and it will do the same thing as a banjo minnow without the shame of buying a banjo minnow! ;)

My buddy loves the banjo minnow as well.

I met a guy this year who's strictly live bait fisherman,I've seen him like 5 times now and we got to talking. He thinks a lot of soft plastic stuff I use is gimmicky.

What do I consider a gimmicky lure?...

... any lure other than a soft rubber grub/jighead or a hard plastic suspending jerkbait. It's good that I'm not set in my ways!

One that I thought was going to be a gimmick was the Rage Tail Shad. When I took it out of the package and held it in my hand I thought it looked like a glob of plastic with a ridiculous tail, could not figure out how it would catch a cold. It is not a hot bait in this area but has done very well around the country, some places it is a must have. Big O hit a homer with that one. Sometimes the look test can be wrong.

Nah. Irene doesn't have any problems with this thread.

Ha! Excellent.

I had like 6 power pak shads growing up, never caught a darn thing on them.

I did catch about 6 fish in one day on the flying lure, that was good money

Flying Lure, Banjo Minnow
