Crank Bait Depths

Featured Replies

Just seeing what everyone considers to be certain depths of crank baits that are necessary.

For example Rapala carries DT 4,6,10,14,16. Now my question to you is this:

Do you carry a range of depths that vast? Or, do you carry certain key depths, if so what depths do you select?

I for instance love cranking, probably my favorite way to fish. I carry my 4 favorite colors (Bluegill, Shad, Hot Mustard and Yellow Perch) in DT 6, 10 and 14. Though that is my key depth range for cranking, I'm not huge on deep cranking but love shallow to mid depth cranking. Now do you think it's a necessity for me to be carrying a 10' crank or could I cut down on tackle and stick to 6 and 14 as the 14 can still be worked on the bottom in 10'. Just trying to get an idea what everyone else does.

i personally carry a minus 1, 6, 10 and 14. That covers most areas I fish.

Wake-18' that is what I carry. I like to have all of the water I fish covered from top to bottom.

I carry 4, 6, 10, 14's, and 16's.  I got the whole spectrum covered with 4' being my primary fishing zone.

In my tackle bag I have baits that cover just about everything-wakers, 1-minus, 2', 4', 6', 7', 8', 10', 12', 14', 16', 18', 20', and a few 20+

The ones I find myself using the most are wakers, 4', 7', 12', 14', 16', and 18'.

I have every depth range till 16 ft covered but i don't usually fish past 10 ft.

With deep divers you can adjust the running depth by the length of your cast and the angle of your rod tip during your retrieve. A long cast and low rod tip will get you maximum depth a short cast an a high tip will make the bait run shallower. My go to bait lately has been a dd14. This one covers 4-11 feet well for me. I use the dd22 for 10 plus feet and have one of each ready

Really every depth range....from 1' up to 24'.

Since i don't crank much i just carry a basic selection of them. A couple in the 0-2ft, 3-6ft, 7-10ft and the 15ft+ divers.

To get a DD14 to run 4 ft you must be using a 7:1 reel with 30#mono reeling above your head lightning fast. ;D

That's weird, I fish them on a 7' mh on a C3 5:1 on 10# rod tip a little lower than you and they still seem to go 8-10'.

I carry 2-3 colors in every range of depth that I fish. I personally don't fish anywhere deeper then 10' so my set up is;

0-3  4-7  7-9  10-12

It seems to work well for me and the areas I fish.

There are too many variables involved in what depth a lure actually runs at, as opposed to its stated depth.  I have so many cranks that cover the gamut of depths, down to about 20'.  I just keep picking through and using them until I find the one that runs right for the area I'm fishing.
