St. Croix Avid For Jigs?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy a bait casting St.Croix Avid for my jig rod. I was wondering if anyone has any input on which would be a better set up. A MH/F or H/F for jig fishing. I plan on using anywhere from a 1/4 oz to a 1/2 jig for most of my fishing. Thanks for any help.

The type of cover you fish should be considered, but the MF will handle that size jig nicely. MH/F if the cover is really heavy. HF is overkill here imo. St Croix power ratings tend to be slightly understated compared to other brands.

I use a Dobyns Champion 734C which is rated as a MHF so you should be good for that lure weight rating. It will also be a more versatile rod if that's important to you. I wouldn't go any lighter than MHF. If you will be fishng heavier cover, deep or long casts, lean toward the heavy. Good fishing.

I use the AVC70MHF for jigs - works great.

Definitely not the H for St Croix... as DVT mentioned SC rods run "heavy" and that power rod would be a broomstick. If you throw 1/4 and 3/8 jigs more often than 1/2 and it's in light cover, go with a M... if moderate or more cover and you throw 1/2 oz more frequently, go with J's MHF. Great rod whichever model you end up going with.

A M/F would work very well and I would only consider the MH/F if you fish some heavy cover. As stated St Croix rods are under rated.

Absolutely! The Avid C70MHF should do perfectly.

I have both the 70mhf and the 70hf. I throw most of my jigs on the h/f, but NEVER throw a jig less than 1/2 oz on it! I also use the mh/f but I prefer the h/f even though most think it is overkill! Thats just me, and what makes the world go round!
