Spider Jigs

Featured Replies

New to the site and man have I learned a lot from it. I fish Lake St. Clair pretty frequently and before visiting this site I never used spider jigs for smallmouth, and I've noticed that a lot of people love them on this site. How do you guys rig them, on a jig? and who makes your favorite spider jig?

GYCB Hula Grub. I used to fish it quite a bit, but the Fat Ika and Kreature have pretty much taken its place.

This year the Rage Tail Single Tail Grub has been my go-to bait in this general category. You might think

a grub is a grub, but I think you will surprised by what a difference the Rage Tail makes.

Yamamoto probably makes the best. I really like color #176 for smallmouth. I just picked up a couple of packs of the Damiki Hydra twin tails and they look and feel awesome too. We fish these up here mainly on football head jigs without weed guards. I fish 3/4oz and 1/2oz most of the time but will go up to a 1 oz. when targeting fish in th 50' range or really heavy current. You can just drag these slowly back to the boat or hop them, depends on what the fish want.

Green Pumpkin and Watermelon

The spider jig or skirted double tail grub is my confidence bait for smallmouth. I rig them on a 1/4 to 3/8 ounce football head with a 3/0 hook and fish them exposed hook. To date, the GYCB has been my choice with a Chompers thrown in from time to time. WCCT and I like the same color, #176. I started a recent thread to get Rage to add a skirted double tail grub to the line. The action of Rage baits is incredible and to think of that in a spider grub style bait....well that would be the deal.

Green Pumpkin and Watermelon

what he said....I hope the rest of the state of michigan doesn't know this......Consider buying or stocking up on this color....you will run out real quickly.

Green pumpkin and watermelon are two staple colors that you will/should find in everyone's box in every type plastic they carry. Only thing i have caught more fish on than those two is blue flek.

Cabin Creeek makes a great spider jig. The skirt looks like a hydra skirt, but has a much thinner profile. Great price too. Cant beat their tubes either.

I use Yamamoto twin tail spider jigs in #176 color A LOT. We have sculpins as a primary forage, and this works wonders. Generally I rig them on a 1/4 oz football jig, but will use 1/8oz too. But that's because I'm usually fishing rocky structure.

For LSC I use green pumpkin varients and smoke purple. Thats any plastic I throw on that lake.

  • my #1 lure. Chompers 4" with a football head jig. weight depending on the depth. mostly fishing rockpiles and rip rap.

  • I have been throwing spider grubs for about twenty years, starting with the Yamamoto in either watermelon, or watermelon/red flakes.

Over the decades, i have tried just about every brand of them, and still, the GYCB HUla Grubs in four inch ARE THE BEST..

The GYCBs have tremendous action; the best....but they are very fragile.

A recent entry, the Keitech spiders, are a very durable and a great fish catching lure, but they may have been discontinued.

You CANNOT mix the Keitech spiders with ANY OTHER PLASTICS, or they will melt horribly.

The up side of them is they are tremendously durable; the best I have seen in that.

I lose them to snags, not having them ripped up by fish the way GYCBs do.

GYCB Hula Grub is a great bait that can be fished all year round. Tons of colors and will get bit when nothing else will. I can't hardly get my dad away from them. I've always fished them on a football jighead.

I like throwing a yamamoto 4 or 5 inch hula grub with a chompers 3/8 oz. jighead. i have caught some big smallies doing this

Spider Grubs are one of my top 3 river smallmouth baits. When i first discovered how smallmouth reacted to them i became an addict very quickly. Needless to say i stocked up heavily, and agree the best action i've seen so far is the GYCB version.

But if RAGE came out with one.....ohhhhhh baby. just sayin :eyebrows:
