Set-up for jigs, crankbaits, and heavy spinners...
Hey all... Bass fishing here in the Northeast is pretty much done for the year. I'm now looking to the spring and one thing I'd like to get going on is a rod and reel set up for use with jigs, crankbaits, and heavy spinner baits. I just purchased a Penn Captiva CV 4000 with a 6.2-1 ratio, 11BB and 200yds/10lb. I am looking for a rod to match. Will this be a good reel for what I intend to use it for?? What rod would be a good match??? Any other ideas?? Thanks in advance!!! bassinajr

Anybody ever put structure into a pond like this?
Muddy, I am with you but I am getting the feeling that improving the infrastructure?? of a pond is the job of the DNR/DEM. That having been said, I also think that they probably don't have the time, manpower, and funds to do it. Sooooo... if we were to HELP them out within reason, I don't think they would throw us in jail. Now that I'm thinking about it, I will talk to a retired DEM guy I know and see what his take is on this question. bassinajr

Can anyone identify these lures???
Help from the Norse countries...this is the best forum ever!!! Further info. With the use of a magnifying glass, I can see the word FINLAND on the plastic bill of some of the lures. I cannot read anything else. So I think we have them narrowed down to lures from Sweden or Finland and they are used for what, salmon, trout, steelhead??? bassinajr

Can anyone identify these lures???
I know with all the talent and experience on this forum...we WILL identify these!!!!! Here's more information. Don't know if it will help. These came from an estate sale. The guy lived on lake Eire and did alot of down rigger fishing. I assume they are for bass, walleye etc. They all float except for the single lure displayed. bassinajr

Anybody ever put structure into a pond like this?
Hey all...... I am not a big fan of the DNR's and DEM's of the world. many times their employees have a SMALL chip on their shoulders. I don't see why depositing natural items, (trees, boulders, brush, etc.) that have a good chance of ending up in the pond ANYWAY is illegal. As long as your placing them in areas where they will not harm boaters, jet skiers, swimmers etc. I can see them MAYBE busting your chops for PVC, pallets, etc. (they have chemicals in them blah! blah! blah!) but natural stuff ?????? PS Where was the DEM when I was getting buzzed by jet skiers this past summer, while they were ripping up all the grass and lily pads....why I ought ta!!! (OK I vented...) > bassinajr

It"s the WIND that kills ya..not the cold!!!
Hey all.... Does anyone know some NON SECRET smaller ponds with moderate protection from the wind in the RI, MA, CT area? I refuse to stop fishing (No..I really mean it, and not in one of those little houses on the ice either!!! lol) The cold I can do, but add the wind and GEEEZZ!! The big tin boat is done for the year, so I'm talking a 10' Bass Raider with trolling motor or a small canoe. Any ideas or discussions!!!!! Thanks!! bassinajr

Anybody ever put structure into a pond like this?
Great question muddy!!! I have a small pond near my house that is a great little gem. Problem... A LOT of the bottom is sand, shells, and muck. I think a pond like this would benefit all around from some cover. I was going to down some trees (Dying trees on the shore line) but I like your idea better. The fish on this pond are DYING for cover. I see where some trees (small) have ended up in the water, and for sure, you'll catch a couple near eveyone of them. Problem is everyone knows where they are. My problem/question is...can you get in trouble with your local DEM (game warden, tree huggers, etc.) for doing this? Would they see it as "modifying the existing ecosystem!!!" Fishing yes...fines NO!! (the bait monkey would be very upset if I I had to gave his money to the State!!!) bassinajr AND OF COURSE, NOT IN TOURNAMENTS!!!!

Live VS Artificial... State, Local, Club, Re
In re: "I'd bet if bassinajr lived and fished in these parts, he would never have asked the question in the first place, as he would have seen how "artificial lures make it >easier< to catch these big trout-eaters. IMPO, around here, if somebody gets a really big bass on live bait, yea', it should have an asterik beside it........ an asterik denoting that this catch is "extra special", with the angler having put in countless hours learning how to fish a live dad, or crawler correctly, then having the patience required to do so, while any goofball can catch a big one on a swimbait {I'm living proof ! " Chris, I asked this question for one reason: stimulating conversation among board members. Little did I know the opinions would be so varied and interesting!! That is exactly why I joined this forum as oppsed to others. I learn a little more every time I log on here. Although I am recently back into bass fishing after 15 years or so, I have fished since I was young. I have used every bait known to man, live and artificial. I speak honestly when I say I am impressed at the fish on your posting and your experience. I would use a peanut butter and jelly sandwich if I thought I could catch a bass like that!!!! In RI the record is 10 lbs, change so everthing is relative I guess. I will venture to the "Bass capitals of the country" as soon as humanly possible and $$$$ allows. Thanks to you and all who weighed in on this topic!! bassinajr

New to tournaments.....any help out there??!!
Hey all.... I am from the New England area (Rhode Island) and fished my first tournament this past fall. I really enjoyed it and learned from the experience. My questions is this..... How do I get into more tournaments for the upcoming 2008 fishing year? I found my first tournament with the help of a few new friends on this forum. I am wondering where to start. Do you need to belong to a private bass club to get into alot of tournaments? Are there many "open" tournaments in the new England area? (Right now, I am talking NH, CT, MA) I am a member of B.A.S.S. but I don't see where they have any local level tournaments. It's NOT about money (making or spending) just finding some more good people to fish and be involved with and some friendly competition. I would appreciate any positive advice or ideas. Thanks in advance!!! bassinajr

Live VS Artificial... State, Local, Club, Re
Hey all... I liked the banter on the Forum regarding bass size comparision by State. Here's a question for all... Should State, Local, or Club records be broken down between live and artificial lures or baits? As most of us know, from the BIG tournaments to the local tournaments it's artificial ONLY. In this day of stats, records, and big time money riding on the fact that "SIZE MATTERS!!!" does the type of bait matter and should there be an asterik next to some records?? Ideas, opinions, dsicussions??? bassinajr

Shakespeare President II reel...... Thanks folks!!
Hey all.. A while back I asked advice from forum members as to the value of a 1980 Shakespeare President II. I was entrusted to sell this for a friend, and didn't want him to loose out. Well, you all told me top dollar would be around $200.00 (under good conditions). I managed to get that amount for him. Thanks for all the advice and help!!!!! bassinajr

Bass Compairison
Nice question!!! I live in Rhode Island where the state record is 10 lbs. and change. I have caught a couple close to four pounds the past few months, but my brother has two eight pounders mounted from 20+ years ago. (When I was a kid...Ha!!) Don't see to many of those anymore. I would say a good size bass in RI now days would be 6-7 lbs. Any one from RI agree/disagree?? Of course if you fish in "The Reservoir"!!!!! bassinajr

Aluminum VS Fiberglass..should I switch??
Hey all.. I got back into bass fishing this past year after a 15 year lay off. My buddy and I scored an older Fisher aluminum hull bass boat with a 25 HP Mercury. We have been using it since the early summer and into this fall. The boat was used on the ocean (bays, inlets etc.) and we are in the process of "fixing" the wear from the salt water. (Mostly the wiring) The boat runs great, looks great, and with a little more TLC well...... Here's the thing. My buddy wants to "trade up", Ranger, Skeeter etc. but we live in Rhode Island where there are not many places to run a huge bass boat with a 225 HP engine. Plus, I like the durability of the aluminum boat. I would like a more stable boat (larger beam) but I worry about the durability of fiberglass hulls and the cost. I would appreciate any advice, comments, ideas from other boaters; maybe those who have had both type of boats. Thanks, bassinajr
