  1. That Nitro is new out this year I believe. It shouldn't be discontinued already. It's identical to the Browning reels though if you look at it, just it's a bit larger.
  2. I believe that crank just threads onto the shaft instead of being attached with the traditional nut to hold it on. As you turn the crank to reel in line you would always be turning it in the direction of tightening the threads so it would never come loose on you through use. I think you can just crank it backwards againts the anti-reverse bearing and it should loosen up and come off, depending on how tight it is on there anyway. Every other reel I've ever seen that was made that way has the handle come off in that manner. Then to retighten it again you'd have to have the drag fairly tight and hold the spool to keep it from turning while you crank the handle back on, turning it as if you were reeling in line.
  3. AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!! I was on BPS website and completely through the checkout process with the Rick Clunn 7.1:1 ratio reel in the cart, all I had to do was hit "confirm" and it was mine..............then I cancelled it at the last minute and went back with a 6.4:1 ratio instead. I figured if I didn't get that one now, then I might end up talking myself out of it later cause I already have an Extreme with the same ratio that I'd use instead. For right now I'll just have two 6.4:1 ratio reels, and I won't have a 7.1:1 version at all like I wanted so that's incentive for me to get one later on. The 6.4:1 will fish like I'm used to already so I can use it for cranks, spinners, jigs and T-rigs all alike. I wish I had the money to just shell out and get everything I want all at once but I don't. :'( So I'll just have to get it a piece at a time and eventually get it all bought up. Incidentally, I tried to go through Bass Pro Shops from the link here on this site in the tacklebox pull down menu above, so the bass resource site gets credit, but when I did that I was unable to add items to the shopping cart on the BPS site, it just kept saying "error" and wanted me to fill out a form describing the error specifics and submit it to the BPS site. But it also said it was unable to show what the error even was and I didn't know what it was either, so how could I explain it?? I had to just go directly to the BPS site to get it. Sorry all. :-[
  4. I saw that. They only had the 5.4:1 ratio left though and I wanted a faster one. Really I want one of all three ratios, but I'm starting off with the faster one right now.
  5. I'm thrilled with the Extreme I have now. But since the Rick Clunn is on sale for only $5 more then I'm gonna get it and see what it's like. So no Pro Qualifier for me. Really it just looked like a silver Extreme with a different brake. The Rick Clunn looks like a blue Extreme with an extra bearing and slightly more line capacity, not that that matters. The extra bearing is nice though. I looked at the Trion today at my local tackle shop. It's nice, it really is, but it's a bit bulky and it's also $100 compared to that BPS Rick Clunn only being $70 right now. So I'm gonna get one of those in the 7.1:1 ratio, and hopefully by spring time I'll have another one or maybe even two more, and a few Shimano Compre rods for them all.
  6. Yatesville is down about 2 feet as of last Saturday. I was able to stand on the shore where water would normally be at and it would have been knee deep at that point but it was dry instead.
  7. Not really. I've been out a couple of times in the last two months and one time by boat I did decent with 7 fish and the last time it was shore fishing and I caught one single lousy crappie and that was it. Oh well, it was still fishing and I had a good time trying anyway. IF....I get that Pro Qualifier I'll do a review for you guys. Not sure I want to shell out the $100 for it when the Extreme is only $65 in the Fall Angler catalog right now. They are nearly the same reel, even the same number of bearings, just the PQ has a newer crank and slightly different brakes it appears. Otherwise, not much different.
  8. Oh I'm completely sold on my Extreme but I was just thinking these are like the Extreme but maybe a grade up or something. They're built on the same frame and all. I also learned that Pflueger makes the BPS branded reels and that's another plus for me. I love the frames and bodies they use, it's so small and palmable, just really comfortable and very light weight also.
  9. You are exactly right, it's a medium heavy with fast tip Shimano Compre in a 6'6" length. I plan to do the bulk of my fishing with these rods and this rating. I guess I'll know more about them when I get the rod in my hand and get to fish with it, cause I don't have one yet, but I will have soon. They make them in a medium power too, in the 1/4 to 3/4 range but if I can make 1/4 oz. baits work on that medium heavy then I won't have to buy another rod just for that weight lure.
  10. Extremes are on sale for $69.99 in the Fall Angler catalog right now. Might be on the website too, but some things in that catalog are sale price where on the site they are still regular price. The Extreme baitcast combo right now is on sale for $99.99 in the catalog, and that's the price of the rod itself when at regular retail, it's like getting the reel for free.
  11. Really?? They said it had a 6 pin system in it. I never knew exactly how the one in my Extreme works, so I guess it has the 6 pins in it also?? Since I got your attention with this post, can you tell me if the BPS baitcasters and the Pfluegers have the same paddle grips on the cranks as each other?? I know the Extreme is somewhat different from the Pfluegers cause its grips are basically flat, but the other BPS branded reels all look like the grips are twisted, such as the Pro Qualifier and the Rick Clunn signature series, and the Johnny Morris ones also. I'm definitely going to get another reel, either tonight or tomorrow, by ordering one online. I'm looking at that Rick Clunn model since they're on sale and very similar to the Extreme, but I'm not sure if the grips are going to be comfortable or not with that twist in them......however, I've seen some Pfluegers at Dick's such as the Echelon and also the ones they put on that All Star Select/Pflueger baitcast combo (the Criterion??) and they all have twisted grips also and they do feel comfortable to me in the store while looking at them. I have no way to go see the BPS reel before ordering it though, not without driving 3 to 4 hours away that is.
  12. Here's the link to check out the new Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier baitcast reel. What do you think of it?? Very similar to the Extreme I like so well, but has different brakes with the centrifugal and magnetic combined instead of the inertia transfer system. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_102287____SearchResults
  13. A rod says 3/8 - 1 oz. lure weight. If I cast a lure weighing 1/4 oz. but it's a lure like a jig or spinnerbait, isn't that 1/4 oz. rating only allowing for the leadhead itself, and by time I add weight for the skirt, hook, blades or wire arm, it's well over 1/4 oz.......right?? I'm guessing a rod won't load right and cast very far if the lure weighs less than it's intended useage was for, but if this is right then I won't have any real trouble throwing 1/4 oz. spinnerbaits and jigs with a rod with the 3/8 - 1 oz. range.
  14. Oil is for bearings and grease is for the gears inside the reel. I lube mine up about once a year, or as often as they feel like they need it, and that would be when they begin to feel a little rough in the retrieve. If you don't have very much experience, or the reel is very expensive, I'd recommend letting someone do it that knows how.......but of course, I learned how by just diving in and doing it myself........you just have to make sure you put everything back together in the right order after you take it apart, clean it, then relube it again. You'll know real quick if something's wrong after you reassemble it. On changing line, if it's mono I might change it 2 or 3 times a year, it really depends on how often you go fishing and what condition it gets in while you use it. For braid, I don't know, I've never tried any. My mono gets kinked up some after several uses, spinning reels twist it up and when it becomes a hassle to fish with then I change that out. Baitcasters get kinks in them from backlashes. Line on those usually lasts me a little longer and I might only change it one time a season, maybe twice. Spinning reels it might be as many times as 3 or more, but that's after I've exausted the spare spool's line also, 2 spools per reel. I use mine a LOT!
  15. Now that is a plan! 8-) Hope that SW has them. At half price Compres are an excellent deal. Did I tell you at another store I got a Crucial for $59?? ; ;D I am extremely jealous of you guys finding these great deals and I live so far away from them (but still glad you guys are getting them anyway). I read on here somewhere that someone found Clarus rods on sale 1/2 price and I called my tackle store here locally and they only had them 10% off. The Clarus is the one I want for my spinning rod, I like the feel of it and I think the handle grip is nicer. I don't like the cutout on the foregrip of the higher line Shimano spinning rods. My hands ache sometimes from squeezing and the smaller the grip on the rod, the worse it seems to make it (may be getting some carpal tunnel developing). The Clarus is large enough to suit my needs and it's also sensitive enough to work for what I need as well. I'm getting the medium power with medium fast tip action in a one piece rod. For the Compre casting rod, it's gonna be the medium heavy with a fast tip. I can tell I'm gonna become very particular about my rods, now that I am learning a bit more about them. They say with knowledge comes sorrow but so far the only thing I'm sorry about is not making the decision to step up years ago.
  16. I thought about it some more and I really really want that Shimano rod so I'm not going to settle for something I haven't seen over something I know what it is just because it's a great sale price. I'm definitely getting that reel though and I'm gonna look around to see what I can find on a rod deal for a Compre. My brother in law lives within 5 minutes of a Sportsman's Warehouse so he can check it out for me and if they're on clearance, he can get one for me. Then when I go to visit here in a couple of weeks I'll pay him for it and TAKE IT HOME!! ;D
  17. Well, I was dead set that I was going to get a Bass Pro Shops Extreme baitcast reel and a Shimano Compre casting rod.......until today when I got the BPS Fall Angler catalog in the mail and see that the Extreme combo is on sale for $99.99!!! That's basically getting the reel for free when you order the combo cause the rod itself is that price when not on sale. SO, I'm either going to get this combo, or I'm going to stick to the original plan and just get the reel for now, which is also on sale for $64.99 by itself. I can't afford to get the Extreme reel and the Shimano rod right now together though. What do you think I should do?? I guess it comes down to which one of those rods should be better, the Shimano Compre or the BPS Extreme.....any idea?? Do I get the Extreme combo now and have a great rod/reel, or do I hold out for the Shimano rod later cause it might be the best of the two?? I don't live anywhere near a Bass Pro Shops store so I can't look at the Extreme rod before I buy it. I already went and checked out the Compre in a local shop here and was satisfied with it's feeling though. Trouble is, getting the combo I really wanted will cost me roughly $155 plus taxes and shipping, but the Extreme combo by itself will be about $50 less and that's money in the bank!! What should I do?? :-/ For the record, I'm comparing the 6'6" length in the Compre and Extreme rods.....medium heavy power with fast tip action. I'm looking for a very sensitive rod to fish jigs, T-rigs, and occasionally spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, and want to use 14 lb. fluorocarbon line on it.
  18. Yeah, I was talking about these earlier in this thread. They're at my local tackle shop and I plan to get some next time I'm there.
  19. Is the 60 degree tie the type that goes side to side at an angle?? I thought the vertical tie would work for everything. I don't understand why you would need a different type of line tie on a jig. I've read something about knots fraying on some of them, is that why??
  20. Can you not just use a football head for everything??
  21. What's a good jig to use for bass fishing?? Some of them look like they have heads to keep them from rolling over on their sides and others don't. Then some have the line tie sideways and others are straight up and down. Since I know nothing about using jigs, what's a good one to buy??
  22. That is true you don't remove a car battery, but you usually are using it about everyday when you drive the car so you know that the battery is good each day when the car starts again. The boat doesn't get moved or even started for nearly 5 months so if the battery drops down in charge, a person might not notice it for a pretty long time. Did I see by your avatar that you've never been bass fishing!!!! We're gonna have to declare an emergency and get you out there with at least a spinnerbait or something tied on!!!! I was just worried about this boat this year now that I have the onboard charger, and also now that my other portable charger bit the dust, I don't have a way to keep them charged up inside the house anymore, but I was worried about them being out in the cold air for an extended period of time. I guess that charger will do it's job to keep them up though.
  23. I always just figured I could use my 6.4:1 and just crank it slower but I never thought about torque on deep divers. I am just now getting into crankbaits though and not quite yet up to the deeper ones, 8 feet or less is about my limit right now.
  24. Do you just add distilled water only?? I used bottled water one time on a battery, spring water if I remember right, and it died shortly thereafter, I never got to use it not even one more time after that. How high do you fill each cell??
  25. I've had these splitshots ever since I started fishing and have never changed them. I bought that kind cause I knew they could be removed and reused again later. Never occurred to me that the others were made any different, especially since I don't use them hardly at all, just every once in a while but no more than 2 times a year probably. I'll check out the plain kind now cause that would be an improvement for crimping on the line, plus I hate that snotty stuff that comes back wrapped around it too.
