when i bought my 898 it came with a paper manual(book)

i was in the same boat, i went with the bigger 898si, in the long run, i knew i would have wanted the bigger screen, the 898 is an AWESOME unit.

i use a G.Loomis 6'8" bronzeback spinning rod with a Shimano Sahara 2500 reel with suffix 8lb mono.

i had a 97 force made by merc on a tracker i had, never had any issues with it at all.

i pretty sure it's the older ones, before merc took over, i had a 96 40hp on a tracker, never any issues, i have a 97 75hp on my nitro, they have never givin me any trouble, just take care of them, they take care of you.
