Swimbait reel
It isn't the reel that's backlashing. A bigger reel is a must for swimbaits, but that won't solve your issue. You gotta train your thumb!

LOL, its sooooo bad, I couldn't finish it.

What size swimbaits for 5-6lb bass?
I think that if you think some special bait will get the job done, then you are jumping the gun. To me, bait selection is an evolution in problem solving. You need to find the big fish. They won't "come to your bait."

Dyneema = Spectra. The Gore is probably the same stuff in the new Suffix. http://www.sufix.com/usa/fishing_line/832/

Jig Rods: A Difference Of Opinion
I use a moderate or mod-fast taper for heavy, heavy cover. I want the hookset and weight of the fish to load up the entire blank, not the tip and then the backbone. I'm setting the hook and hoisting the fish up out of cover in one movement. For anything else, I agree - a light weight, sensitive, mh/xf rod is pretty much what I want for a jig rod. Is your goal to protect the rod tip during on an aggressive hookset, or do you feel you have less control of the fish with a fast action rod? Both, really. The hookset isn't really that aggressive - no more than a frog set, more of a flick. Its the second half, or the "sling shot that fish out of there" that is. And yes, slower action does equal more control of fish -- sometimes. Some of this stems from trout fishing in the winter. Those fish are much larger, and more powerful, and yet the big, slow action rod puts the screws to them. I actually know fly anglers that use fast action rods that complain about it not being sporting with slower rods, LOL. At any rate, that's just my preference for one type of fishing, heavy matted coontail. Often the coontail has zebra mussels growing on it - can you imagine? I want that fish up and outta that crap fast.

Fishing Deep Diving Cranks W/ Leader?
#1 way I've reduced pike bite offs is to learn how to fish for them, and then not fish for them, LOL. Seriously though, I find I can tell its a pike chasing my crank. Not on the days when they are inhaling them, but following, and nipping. Bass just don't do this. I use graphite cranking rods, so I can feel quite a bit. When you get the "nippers," give them a quick hookset. You'll usually hook them on the back treble, and release is as simple as getting them up to the surface fast, and shaking the bait free. Yeah, I said shaking the bait free. Never have to touch the smelly gators, and you ensure a safe release for you an the fish, and you saved a ton of time. The last bit can be important in a tournament.

The top one reason for using a leader here is zebra mussels.

Leaving drag star loose in storage...
I only loosen them for long term storage or service. Since I'm a "thumber," I run them pretty loose anyway, never more than 4-5 lbs. of resistance, unless its a heavy cover reel.

Yes, Skull Crusher is an awesome name. I know several northern pike friends of mine that would like to taste, I mean test these out.
