Rig it up as posted above. Then cut it off, and throw it in the lake. Reel up the extra line all the way into the reel. Break the rod in half. Chuck that in the lake, too. Turn on your graph. Grab your drop shot rig. Fish with that. ;P

Scupper plugs reduce noise when paddling and reduce the chances of water spraying up - both of which have occurred in boats I've used, and I can assure I am overloading them. I'd say the scupper can pretty much get plugged unless you're dealing with surf or heavy rains. What's worse than a boat the needs scupper plugs? One that doesn't drain properly when they're out, or one that has an odd shaped scupper that prevents plugs being used at all.

I give the other boat twice the distance of a long cast, whether I think they're wrong or not.

The market buoy pattern is often stronger than following the bent rod pattern. Anyway, I never understood why other boaters would try to get close to fisherman - they have lines that tear up prop seals and hooks that tear up skiers in the water around. Seems pretty stupid to me.

A 2500 spinning reel with a paltry 6:1 ratio can take up more line than most 7:1 or faster baitcasters. The "covering more water" is not valid.

I generally prefer casting gear, but I don't feel I lack control when spinning. My left hand cups the spool on the cast, and can control what comes off the spool. I'm doing it in the first 15 seconds here. Same effect as thumbing the spool.

Call the bass pro reel repair and ask for a pawl for that model.
