  1. I don’t think you have enough, lol. Best to always be prepared! ? Most of the time I’ll have 1-3 2-piece rods and a small selection of baits. 1 7’ Okuma Celilo UL 1 6.5’ Shimano Compre MH spinning 1 7’ Cabela Mag Touch M casting NEW! 1 6.5’ Daiwa Airdx M casting This pretty much covers everything I’d face until this year when I started exploring the realm heavier/power fishing for heavy cover. Fat chance I’ll find a 2 piece H casting rod, lol.
  2. I see this a lot! Last saw it about 3 weeks ago while fishing the green river. I don’t know whether to inform them, or punch them, or push them into the river. This guy was different because his casting skills were good and I could tell he had experience when he worked his inline spinner. It suggested to me that his decision to hold his rig inverted was intentional. Perhaps I am the weird one. I usually employ pinky behind the stem with 3 fingers on the other side, but I have used the other possible configurations already described EXCEPT the inverted one. Push me into the drink if I do that, lol. Indeed. Fish used to be both singular and plural. But so many people used fishes for the plural form that it has been accepted by society and can be found in dictionaries for quite some time now.
  3. Update: I don’t know what I did to mess up my original report. Sorry guys! I’m going to recreate it but be a heck of a lot more succinct, lol. As a shore angler, bass fishing prospects sharply taper from near zero to “forget about it” in the pacific nw. For me, by mid September it’s over for bass and I usually target salmon. This year has been different. It’s been very good. Lots of firsts and more bass. I cracked Lake Dolloff after about 14 years and caught my first bass out of it. I cracked Fenwick Lake after about the same time period with 7 bass caught in one outing. If you’re wondering, the answer is yes. This is the lake the company Fenwick uses. Even my tough and stingy home lake, Steel Lake has been giving it up. I caught my first post mid-September bass last Sunday on a homemade experimental inline spinner intended for salmon on my home lake. I used it over and in grass beds. Then, yesterday after my inline spinner, cranks and hard jerks yielded no results, I was able to make the right adjustment when I switched to a t-rigged Creme creature with a 3/16 oz. bullet weight. I dragged it and followed that with a double pop and Bam! I brought only one rig, my new Daiwa Air DX. I’ve heard good things about this lower end and I was pleasantly surprised to find a 2-piece Air DX and for $39.00. It’s currently paired with my smallest bc reel, the venerable curado 101D. This rig feels like a light saber in hand. Smack it, flip it, rub it down, oh no, lol. It’s intended use is for lighter t-rigs and small cranks and jerks and spinnerbaits. Despite it being a bit on the thinner side, this M powered rod easily drove the hook through the upper jaw without a cross the eyes hook set (which I never do anyway). I noticed something in the bass’ gullet. It looked like the tail of a perch. I know that the bass are chasing the perch and whatever remaining stocked trout are left and this is what makes catching them hard from the shore. I have to be there and ready if and when they decide to patrol the dock and shallower water. I was fortunate this bass took a break from chasing perch to come to the dock/swimming area. I am going to continue pursuing bass as much as I can through the fall and winter, if only to learn more and pay my dues. Either that or move south, lol.
  4. Sounds like a plan. What kind of rod are you using for this? I have a feeling I don’t have the right rod for such a task. Thanks.
  5. Ooops. Right! I meant the one who resurrected it!
  6. I would imagine the same as you did, it’s likely for abrasion resistance. Braid as you know is thinner than mono and generally thinner line isn’t as abrasion resistant as a thicker line. This is just my take, but I believe that is why higher # braid is used. 20# braid is roughly has the diameter of 6# mono. Who in their right mind would flip into super heavy cover with line that thin. That’s either balls out brave or possibly just plain foolish. In addition ,20# braid is going to dig itself into the spool, and so will thinner braids, sometimes even 30# braid. I think think these perhaps are two of the main reasons why heavier braid is used. As for reels with insanely high drags as you described two things I can think of. 1) Perhaps people who target other bass fight like a blue gill relatively speaking need that higher drag. 2) A selling point or marketing hype. We know how easily bass anglers can get caught. Oooh. 20# drag. I wants it. My precious… It’s me birthday. Sméagol. Just my own thoughts.
  7. A disruption not, my young padawan, but a disturbance it is… yes…a disturbance. (yoda voice, lol) ******** Dang, it’s not even Easter yet. ?? To the OP, congrats. Jigs are still a dumb monkey on my back. Ironically, it’s been nearly 16 and still no jig n trailer like a pig bass yet. Jig and worm? Yes. Feathered jig? Yes. Jig n Pig? Wah, wah, wah, this piggy had none and cried all the way home. ?
  8. Isn’t that a movie? to the topic great idea.
  9. This is just crazy me, but maybe if you experience the same thing on Monday, toss an inline spinner at them. I was having a worse time last out not getting even short strikes, lol. I had some experimental inline spinners I made with me that were intended for salmon so I tied it on thinking I had nothing to lose. Tossed it out and bam! Perhaps the change in the sound created by the blade (vs the spinnerbait) was the difference or kicker. You can see the inline lying on the deck. It’s sad times for my bass fishing when it’s pitch black dark and it is only 2001 hours ?(09/23/21).
  10. Three words. .. flip a coin. ?
  11. Yes indeed. One time I was with a buddy. The fishing was slow and every which way I worked a 5” senko yielded nothing. So I make another cast and I let it sink to the bottom. He and I started chatting and for about 10 minutes and all that time it was dead stuck if that’s a word. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere. I felt a serious SMASH. Instinctively, I reeled up and set the hook. That was awesome. Another time this year. I posted about it here. It happened with a rattle trap style lure.
  12. I like them. They keep me company when I fish at my home lake in the evening. They’re small, probably just a little bigger than my hand. Many times however as the skunk sets in, I tell myself at least someone’s (the ? bats) catching something. The acrobatics they pull off catching insects is pretty cool. There also is a McDs nearby. Maybe I’ll buy a couple of Mc Doubles and fries ? next time so I’d have something to eat while watching the show, lol.
  13. One of my tenets in life is “It’s better to have and not need than to need and and not have.” And you sir, are a shining example. ??
  14. @papajoe222: Great advice, but I’m so anal, I back off both the spool tension knob and drag in the way back to the car after every outing, lol.
  15. I stopped calling it vanish and gave it a new name. Poof! Because just like that, the fish on the business end of Vanish will ”Poof!!!” Just disappear. My brother bought it in 8# test not knowing how bad this line was and for me at the time all I knew was it’s bad reputation. I told him that I heard a lot of bad things about the line but since I didn’t have personal experience with it. Well, I broke that 8# test when I was putting the finishing touches on completing knot. I didn’t even get to a full tightening when it broke like a piece of sewing thread. Next, I grabbed some line between hands and lightly pulled on it, and I broke the line with very little effort. I was shocked. I took the vanish off his reel’s spool and threw it and the unused spool away. If vanish is the only line left in the world, I’ll take up spear fishing, lol. You have a lot of set ups! More than I could handle, and I am not qualified to offer any advice, lol.
  16. I kind of figured you needed a bit more time. Thanks.
  17. Welcome! This is a great site. Glad you’re here.
  18. @soflabasser That is truly a blessing. She has just discovered the fun in kayaking and I’m looking forward to doing this together with her so much so that I will not bring even one fishing set up.
  19. Tell that to my wife, lol. She won’t touch or eat fish as the result of a childhood experience. That said, I took her once believing 100% she’d be hooked like me. She had a trout on and as the rod bent over and shook, (I was so stoked) she got a little nervous, handed me the rod and said, “Here.” And walked away. That was over 15 years ago and a hint and a half to tell me she wasn’t interested, lol. I fish alone 99.999999999% of the time anyway and like DitchPanda, the time alone is many times oh so welcomed and an opportunity to reflect and recharge.
  20. Them Phoenix rods look good to me. Have you used it long enough to assess its sensitivity for when the fish takes the bait of dragging it on the bottom, say on a scale from 1-10?
  21. Yikes! They are heavy. The one I installed was heavy but not 100 lbs. I honestly don’t remember how I put it up by myself, lol.
  22. Indeed. I almost had a heart attack and I thought insuring my daughter at his age was expensive. That’s why I told the op to be seated when he gets the quote, lol. Yep. They actually show these in the mandated driver education courses. Yes, they scare you stiff, but boys will be boys.
  23. Now you tell me. I just installed a ceiling fan, lol.
  24. Same boat. Son just turned 17. I don’t know if you already did the research on what it will cost to insure him. Make sure you’re sitting down. Yikes!! Thank goodness he has good grades, lol. There is a discount for good grades. Did you teach him everything? I taught what I could but my state makes these youngsters take drivers ed at parents expense, and a lot of serious constraints. My son does quite well, but I still get on his you know what when he does stupid things boys his age do, as it doesn’t dawn on them that they are driving a 2 ton object that could seriously injure kill others including them for moment of foolish idiocy. Failing to look over the shoulder when attempting to switch lanes and only using the mirror only and forgetting about the mirror’s blind spot which is why you look. That one sets me off but the other that really gets me is taking freeway exits in heavy traffic. Many times they’re congested and packed. One time in heavy traffic he was getting off on our exit still going 60. I told him to slow down and he told me no, I’m not supposed to slow down until he is truly in the exit lane. I almost yelled, “slow down now! Maybe on a weekend but not during heavy traffic. Many times the exit will be backed up well beyond the exit lane we’ll into the freeway. If you’re still blazing at 60, you might not have enough time to slow down, but even if you do, the people behind you going the same speed as you will have even less time than you and THEY can hit you.” He rolled his eyes and I told him I won’t let him drive with that attitude. Period. This particular exit gets backed well beyond a mile during rush hour and I see so many near misses everyday on the way home.
  25. Why are cemeteries more popular than movie theaters or music concert venues? Because people are always dying to get in.
