How do you put your jig trailers on?
The answer for me depends on the trailer. I'm not all to concerned about the profile or makign the bait shorter or longer. Jigs are primarily a reaction bait for me so fall rate is just about the only large concern. When i was learning to fish jigs, I had two guys teaching me. One used a craw threaded on his hook while the other used a pork chunk hooked through the head. When I'd ask them why, they would simply say "Thats how I like it". Simply put, find a jig trailer that you like and think will catch a fish and fish it for a day. Throw it in the ugly stuff and you might be surprised at what you find. Mottfia

Putting Together a Pattern during Troy U tourney
Hey Guys, I just got back from lake Eufaula and had a blast. We had our second qualifier of the year there to see who will represent Troy in the College tournaments. Going into this event I was leading the points system by winning at Miller's Ferry. I was filling good comign into the event but didn't get to practice so I was a little nervous. I studied the lake and weather to see what it was doing to help me level the playing field. I learned that the lake had rose a foot in teh last few days and a mass front was coming in. So looked over notes and read books to see what the bass "should" do and geared up for the lake. Everyone makes it to the launch site on time and we are all ready to go. We blast off. I simply turn around and start fishing the creek that we came out of. I like this creek and knew it had enough to it to put together a pattern or find a strong spot. I fish down the bank with my partner at a fast pace with a spinnerbait. I get a little lucky in my experimenting cause early on I learned that the bass would crush a white spinnerbait in the top 6inchs of the water column on grassy points. 30 minutes into the day I hook it a 4lber and into teh livewell he goes. Great start ;D We catch a few small ones and am now driving from point to point not wasting anytime on anything else. At a large wind blown point I have a huge bass come out of the water on my blade...but never hooked up :-?. I think I froze alittle . Save that point for later. Move to the next one. We go through a few hours dead spell when I lost 3 fish. I was a little messed up. To start clean I reset to where we started and tried to see if a few places reloaded. The wind was getting strong by the minute and I'm glad that it did. I was still throwing the blade but I adjusted my casting angle so that the spinnerbait came with the wind. We also began targeting only the larger grassy points with sparce grass. Those adjustments made all the difference We went from two fish in the boat at 10am to 15lbs at 1pm. We learned that the point that the big one was on that I lost earlier held a school of large bass. We would fish through it catching two 3lbers each time we hit it. We'd leave for an hour to look for other places like it and then return. In the inbetween times I hooked a 4 but lost it. I had a hard time getting fish in the boat so when we made our last pass on that point and culled the last small keeper, I looked in the livewell and was shocked at the weight that we had. I guess I was thinking of catching 20lbs so bad that those 3lbers I was catching didn't seem as big to me. We got to show off some beautiful Eufaula bass at weigh in. We weighed in 15lbs 7 oz to take first place and qualify to fish for Troy U. in the college tournaments this year. I'm extremely excited about how efficient i was able to fish and how well I used the knowledge I came across before the tournament. I'm learning guys ;D lol. Mottfia

East winds
The fronts that typically come with the wind can play an affect on the fish. The problem with it is that most fishermen don't adjust after they realize that the fish are doing something different. Personally I've caught some of my biggest fish in ugly weather like what is coming over us right now. I think that the fish may be less bothered by it than we are and I know that this weather gets alot of the fishing pressure off the lake because people think the fish aren't "supposed" to bite. its all about adjustments tho You can come in doing the same old stuff that normally catches fish (and I do to start the day) and have success but if thats not working then its time to check other options or change your approach. Those options change as the year goes on. Read up your Bass, FLW, or whatever magazines and books that you have and see what they tell you. The pros give good advice that can apply to your trip and make sense of things for you. Mottfia

Your Biggest of 2009.....So far
Good fish guys. I typically don't carry a camera with me on my fishing trips. Its not something that I'm noy worried about as a tournament fisherman. But I have been fortunate to catch an 8lber earlier this semester from an awesome pond. Thats not common for me. I fish the Alabama River alot and have caught more than a dozen 4lbers out of there this year. Every year I get better at catching those bigguns. Thanks for letting me brag a bit But great catches guys. Yall keep bringing pics of those big fish. Mottfia

FLW College tourney on Guntersville
Hey guys, Well my mistake trend continues on Guntersville. Fishing hydrilla seems to be a weakness for me but thats ok. I'll keep working at it. We got on a late pattern that gave us a couple but we only had 20 minutes left when we found it. We ended up with 5lbs. Not a great showing but all in all I had a great time. Our boater was awesome. His name is Jeremy Vanderbosche from Michigan. We traded jokes and stories for 7 hours while we tried to figure the fish out. I want to congrat Young Harris College. They tore some lips. Catching 5 lbs more the nearest guys on a Triple Trout swimbait. Good job guys. Guys I do want to say that FLW really treats us well. They gave us a driver, money to get there, and they pay extremely well. Not to mention they put us on some great lakes. They won me over with how they did things. I wish I could tell a story about us doing well but it wasn't any the cards this time. We'll get em next time. Thanks for all the support guys. ;D Mottfia

FLW College tourney on Guntersville
Hey Guys, I'm gonna be fishing the FLW collegiate tournament on Lake Guntersville tomorrow. If anyone is in the area please come out and support us and the event. FLW has set up a great format for us college anglers with the use of boats and pros to ride us around the lake. I've been studying hard and hopefully have come up with a great plan. Without practice I have had to use map study to narrow down my areas. I want to thank Catt for all his knowledge that he puts on the board about fishing structure and Hydrilla. Also everyone else that I don't know as well but has added things to help me plan for this event. Yall wish me luck and remember to pull for Troy University. Thanks Guys. I'll have a report next week about how it goes. Mottfia

help--losing too many cranks!!
i use the exact same slip knocker that infidel does with tons of success. It sometimes takes a few drops before I can get it loose but it work more than 90 % of the time. The first thing I always do it give it the bow and arrow. You'd have to watch someone to get it right or have it make sense. Then I get to the other side of the log or whatever you are hung on and pull from that side. The change in direction can pull it free. after that the knocker comes out. If I still can't get it free, then it was a crappy crank anyways and I don't want it. :'( You're gonna loss a few here and there but those techniques really help Mottfia
