  1. Just wanted to thank the Forum for teaching me a new (for me at least) trick. Gill hooked a small one today and remembered reading about passing the hook through the gills on this Forum. Worked like a charm, I was able to pass the hook through the gills and cut the line free. I had never tried that before reading it here. He was a little slow to swim away, but I think he'll be there tomorrow thanks to you guys!
  2. I started a thread a few days ago detailing the problems I was having with my new Energy PT cutting my line. The eyelet/grommet in the level wind mechanism was split. Reel Mechanic said they were supposed to be one piece ceramic, so off it went to Dick's. They replaced it no problem, the new one is a one piece grommet. Not a good start for the reel but I've had other items show a defect, not limited to Quantums. I have nowhere near the experience many of the folks on this forum have, but excepting the (one-time) problem, I like the feel and operation of the reel. Lots of guys here do not however.
  3. Thanks Reel Mechanic! I will certainly follow your advice.
  4. C'mon RW, help me out here! At least it's sitting on a 6-6MHF Avid based on your recs!
  5. Just bought a Quantum Energy PT 7.0:1 burner a few weeks back. I know there are a couple of different 'viewpoints' on this Forum with regard to Quantums, but heck I paid $80 for a $190 retail reel, I figured it was a good buy. The reel feels great, is easy to cast, with a nice smooth retrieve EXCEPT once in a while I feel a slight tug. The grommet where the line enters the level wind mechanism is not a one-piece design, it is split, presumably to help in manufacturing. Anyway, it appears that the line can get caught up in the split, I have found at least two locations where my line has been sheared, kind of like a split end on a hair if you can picture what I mean. Anyone else have this problem? Do all Quantums have this 'split' grommet? I'm not near my equipment right now, but will check my other reels tonight and maybe try and post a picture of the level wind grommet. Thanks for any help!
  6. I'm a far cry from any expert, but here's a link that might be helpful. It is a Lowrance tutorial. There are also a bunch of articles that you can find on this (Bass Resource) site. http://www.lowrance.com/Support/Tips-and-Tutorials/Sonar-Tutorial/
  7. I have the Pelican Predator 10 ft and my buddy and I are perfectly comfortable in it; I would definitely not go below 10 feet though. I can load the boat with no problem into my F150, as one poster stated, you just get the end on the tailgate and then push the rest in. You do have to empty the boat though, a marine battery is way to heavy to keep in the boat. The truck must be level though; there is one pond I fish with a very steep ramp, I can not load the boat alone there. I use a single ratchet strap through the side handles and down to my rear quarter panels, stays nice and snug with no worries. Also I run a bungy cord through the seats to keep them in position when hauling. (Make sure that the seats you get are swivel seats, folding is a nice option and padded is an option as well. I have never had mine in a bay or any other large body of water, I don't get the feeling that it would handle chop too well. If you're thinking of double timing in salt, make sure you get a salt ready TM. A 40# thrust is all I find I need. We can stand in the boat, but only one at a time. When alone, I do not stand (unless I need to see that guy about a horse!). I'm a big guy, 280 or so, and the high center of gravity just doesn't cut it for active fishing. With a buddy in the boat, it is certainly more stable. Good luck
  8. I'm sure glad you asked too, apologize if it appeared I hijacked your thread. Sorry!
  9. Thanks all for the replies. A little counter-intuitive at first, but your descriptions helped out a lot. Thanks!
  10. OK, now you all have me more confused than ever! I thought crankbaits were to be retrieved very fast and so a 7:1 would be the right tool for the job. On top of that, I thought worm fishing was slow slow slow. RW had a post some time ago where he described the technique for fishing worms, "cast it parallel to the bank and let it sit for 30 seconds, twitch it a little and wait again till it gets back to the boat" (I've badly paraphrased RW's post, but I think you know which one I mean.) So why the heck does worm fishing get hooked up (no pun intended, ...well maybe a little) with a 7:1 reel? Help?!
  11. I have the Pelican Predator 10E which I think is a pretty close match to the BassHunter. I don't feel comfortable standing in it when I'm the only one in the boat. It is definitely more stable with a buddy in the seated position. A little more data...when I stand, I raise the center of gravity a fair bit, I'm 275 or so. I do all my fishing seated. If you're young and lightweight, you will have much less of a problem.
  12. I have an Eagle Fishfinder 320 that I paid $120 +/- for. I like it, but it's my first one so I have little to compare it to.
  13. You are the man! I was just leaving to go and pick that reel up! Here's the URL I used (if I can post links, not sure) http://secsports.com/doc_lib/sec_dsg_coupon2.pdf
  14. I am in serious need of some help! I only have access to a couple of ponds, my primary one is Lum's Pond State Park. I also fish Beck's Pond in Delaware occasionally too. I fish from a boat, usually somewhere between 9:00am and 4:00 pm. Today I stayed out until 6:00 pm or so. Water temps today were about 88 degrees. This is really my first season doing any serious fresh water fishing. Anyway...I can't seem to catch a darn thing most days. I have read the State Park's website and it indicates that this pond is heavily pressured so maybe it's not me? I have tried crankbaits, topwaters, spinners, buzz baits, and some plastics. (Though I don't think I am a very good fisherman with worms, I lack the patience I think is necessary.) I would love to hear from some experienced anglers out there how well they do in this pond...just to get me calibrated in my own mind.
  15. Just received my $30 rebate on mt Citica. I sent it in on the last day of the offer. Just FYI if you're still waiting.
  16. The manual for my MinnKota 40lb Endura says a 60 amp breaker should be used. (Lists part number as MKR-19). What I'd like to know is why the motor comes out of the box with spade connectors if you're supposed to wire in a fuse/breaker? Do all of you guys run a breaker or do you run the moror directly off the battery?
  17. Speedbump, I have the 40# Minn Kota Endura hand tiller model. I can email that manual though it doesn't appear to be much help. For a motor that just won't run, all the troubleshooting section points to is battery checks like corrosion, fluid level etc. I'd check simple electrical things like the switch; maybe a wire just got disconnected. I don't know where Murfreesburg (sp?) TN is but I can give you the list of authorized Service Centers if you'd like. There's a half dozen in TN listed in my manual. John
  18. The manual that came with my Pelican indicates that some water might accumulate between the deck and hull caused by rain, or excessive wave action. Mine has drain plugs on the pontoons at the bow; remove and stand the boat on end to drain. As for whether or not it's seaworthy with a lot of water trapped, I'd look carefully when launching and see how high it rides. Good luck J
  19. I never saw the $20 credited during checkout. When it came time to "Confirm order" I decided to back out. I called and ordered over the phone. One thing I love about BPS is that there are real human beings on the other end, not "press 1 for items beginning with r" or whatever. Anyway, my AC66MF is on the way! Thanks to the advice from the Forum, RW, w2wfarmer, and others. Many thanks to bassripper2000 for the heads up!
  20. Poll is showing about half are LH spinning and RH casting. It's funny, but I always thought everyone fished that way until joining the forum and saw all of the varied approaches. I wonder if it has anything to do with how the reels are prep'd for sale. Seems that I can't recall ever seeing a LH caster or a RH spinning reel on the shelf.... Catalogs also seem to show reels in those orientations. (I'm a righty by teh way, except maybe for hockey)
  21. ww2farmer Great post! Thanks so much for your insight and guidance. This one (along with several others including Roadwarrior's) will be saved permanently for future reference. Never ceases to amaze me at my lowly skill level, how subtle differences can be detected by master anglers. Hurry up with your views on reels as well!
  22. Just received mine today. Hope to try them out this weekend. Thanks again, will let you know how they helped this struggling newbie! John
  23. I have a 10 footer and love it. Would stay away if the one you're looking at is the 8 foot, with two guys the 10 is ok, I think the 8 would be very crowded. As far as the wind, a slow troll in wind is not going to happen. Even when headed back to the ramp at 'high' speed, you need to continuously tweak your heading (with the motor on the rear, front mount might be better, haven't tried it yet.)
  24. I have the Pelican 10E. I won't say it can't be car topped with two people, but I'm fairly certain you can't do it alone. The 10E weighs about 150 lbs so getting it up there would be a bit of a challenge. It fit's perfectly in the bed of my pickup. I use a 40 lb trolling motor on mine. I keep a paddle but only for an emergency or getting into the shallows or brush to retrieve a lure. Don't plan on paddling any distance. There is at least one make of similar boat (can't remember the one right now, sorry) that has arrangements for oarlocks, but the Pelican 10E has no such capability. Good Luck J
  25. I've got a 10' plastic Pelican, I mounted my transducer on the trolling motor. Seems to be protected pretty well by the motor's skeg. I fished a cypress swamp absolutely loaded with underwater stumps without a problem. For what it's worth, I mounted a 2"x4" strip of velcro on the gunwales and also on the bottom of the video unit bracket. I haven't decided yet whether I want to drill into the plastic (or know the best way for that matter). Rocks a little, but it's attached pretty firmly. John
