A-Jay's Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~ 2025-2026 Edition
It was a cold but sunny morning, and so after Lynn's treatment, we snagged a couple of cups of Joe, and took a ride over to local Lake Menderchuck. This was the first one of the year, and admittedly, we expected to see the frozen white hate. Well, the winterness did not disappoint us. Totally locked up and not looking like there's going to be any change to that. At least not in the immediate future. Might return in a week or so to take a peak. In the meantime, if the air temps would warm just a tad, I could be convinced to start loading the Pro-V bass with some tackle. Just don't want to have to be wearing gloves while I do it. I will be so happy when the world here is green again. A-Jay

“Older” terminology
So many of the the older terms that I commonly use and have been for a few decades in most any setting, are now frequently deemed radical or politically incorrect. I can't even give examples for fear of being - oh, can't say that either. Fishing terms like Texas rig, Carolina rig, stupid tube, Childs rig, and fat girl might be on their way to getting added to the list. I'll probably just keep rolling like I do and blame it on old age. 👴 A-Jay

Do you post your bass pics and videos at any other sites?
In 15 days I will have been posting fish pics (and eventually video on YT) for 18 years here in the BR forums. They might get shared on other platforms, but besides FB, this is it for me. I tried posting on another SMB platform about 10-12 years ago. Lasted a couple of weeks. Turns out we weren't a good fit. So it's BR or bust for me now. A-Jay

New Video! Bass After a Storm: Where They REALLY Go
Very nice @Glenn ~ How long have you been holding on to that gem ? I can relate. I feel so fortunate to have been born with at least some patience. It was built into our lives. Example . . . Grew up writing out bills, filling out checks, addressing envelopes, buying and using stamps, and actually walking to the mailbox to mail them. And this was all just to keep the lights on in my house. At this point, I wear patience like a Boy Scout merit badge. Something I use varying amounts of just about every day. See plenty of folks who have very little or none. They are tough to be around honestly. Watching them is like seeing someone on the train tracks infront of an oncoming train, and not being able to say anything, because you know they won't listen anyway. Full disclosure. This is not AI-aided and, honestly, should have included much more colorful language. I like Bass. A-Jay

Love New Truck Day ~
Mission Complete. Built this one with all the bells & whistles. The dealer will be transferring my A.R.E. CX Revo bed cap from my current rig to this one. Looks remarkably familiar for some reason. Delivery date to be determined. Expected to be in the August / September time frame. Now I have something else to 'wait' for. Like I don't have enough of those deals going already. #impatient A-Jay

Working to Stay Lean ~
Workout Day 2 ~ Key effective movement principles include the following: Progressive Overload: Continually increasing weight, reps, or set volume is essential to force adaptation and prevent plateaus. Time Under Tension (TUT): Slowing down reps (e.g., 2–8 seconds per rep) increases the time muscles spend under strain, crucial for stimulating hypertrophy. Range of Motion (ROM): Utilizing a full range of motion, particularly emphasizing training at longer muscle lengths, maximizes muscle fiber recruitment. Training to Fatigue: Working close to technical failure ensures maximum motor unit recruitment, regardless of whether heavy or light loads are used. I've had to modify my own version of training to failure because The old guy just doesn't recover like he used to. #borninfiftynine A-Jay

Winter 2025 ~ 2026
24 March 2026 @0745 While taking the dogs out this morning in the light snow flurries, I saw the first Robin of the spring ! And as we we were heading inside, heard the first Canadian Goose overhead. Both really good signs that there is light at the end of this hard water tunnel. A-Jay

A-Jay's Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~ 2025-2026 Edition
I'm probably going to be on the road most of tomorrow, so I'm dropping this one tonight. Winter is overstaying its welcome, and the ice just won't seem to leave, leaving me with nothing to do but impatiently wait out this hard water. Still, it’s Tanker Tuesday, and I’m looking back at this chub—my first Lake Menderchuck fish of 2021. April fishing is always a chaotic mess, and I had to wait for a cold & wet front to pass before getting out there. That afternoon trip really delivered, though, producing a few more impressive brown bass. 23 Days and a Wake-Up ~ A-Jay

Technique specific rods?
I don't utilize every fishing technique, mostly because my target species and typical lake environments don’t demand extreme versatility. Instead, my gear has become highly specialized for the presentations I use most often. While some rigs do pull double duty, it’s mostly seasonal: springtime jerkbait rods become summertime topwater tools, V-Jig setups transition to spinnerbaits, and tube rigs turn into small swimbait sticks. Unfortunately the only thing I can do with any of them presently is perhaps chip ice. A-Jay

Leader length?
A long leader experiences the same forces that a shorter leader does. So while I like the long one for the reasons listed. I still change the whole thing often. Waiting for it to get short before changing, could result in knot failure on the cast due to repeated and or excessive launch damage suffered by said knot. Something to consider perhaps. A-Jay

Working to Stay Lean ~
Back in the home gym for Workout Day 1 after a two-day break. With spring and open water just around the corner, I’m prioritizing staying consistent while staying injury-free. Feeling more motivated than ever to stay fit and get ready for some fishing. #borninfiftynine A-Jay

A Four-pound Indicator
What happens when those two treble hooks from the whopper plopper get hammered into the basses mouth, gills head and eyeballs? We are already hurting every bass we catch. I'll keep doing what I'm doing and let the cards fall where they may. I say you're doing fine. A-Jay

Trucker hats
Trucker hats ? What about ankle socks ? How do we feel about eating with a spork ? And does spam actually go with baked beans ? I bet Ricky Ricardo would know. Yup, it's the middle of March. A-Jay

How Do You Improve Your Odds of Catching?
Talking baits and presentations: how do you improve your odds of catching? So this one could get fairly in-depth, but I'll go with the abridged version. Small picture—Stealth: Make every effort to remain undetected. Meticulous boat position and long casts are the foundation. Aftermarket hooks & hardware on everything. I'll often dye/color soft plastics, mostly trailers. Silent jerkbaits can be trip changers. Big picture: There are no details; everything matters. Sounds overwhelming, but IME, it is not. It starts with building good habits and pays off when I can eternally maintain them. Learn to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Fish Hard A-Jay

Leader length?
My leader length is 5 full pull arms length across my chest, plus a half for good luck. Uni to uni works for me and has been for a long time. I let the performance dictate when I change not an article by Dr Knot. Bass in the Frabil tells the story for me. Btw, how does the knot know you're fishing from shore ? 🤔 A-Jay

Full Grown Bass right there. Nice job. But unless there is a minus sign in front of every number in your post, I just can't relate. Congrats A-Jay
