  7. I have been know to spend many a night catching ZZ's in the back of my truck. I always have an A.R.E cap. Started several years ago while chasing striped bass up & down the east Coast. Catches are ruled by the rising & falling tides and and best ones are 6 hours apart - so we sleep. My current deal is similar to @Junk Fisherman in that I almost always fish alone however my driving distances are routinely less than 2 hours. The drive there I'm always good. It's the travel home after a long day on the water that's a bear. Sometimes I'll zz right at the lake for a while before I drive home. Some trips I will take off knowing that I'm going to hit the first rest area and 'rest'. My other option is to get off the water early, well ahead of ramp or road traffic (which can & often does chew up a ton of time) and while I still have 'Plenty of Gas' in my own tank to travel the highways & by ways safely. Preparation always enhances performance - in this case both coming & going. Finally - while caffeine & energy drinks can 'help' they are not IMO, a replacement for sufficient rest and not something I am willing to bet my life on. The things we do for bass. Sing it with me . . . . A-Jay
  8. I can side with most of this ~ That elusive 'middle ground' can be a tricky deal I think. As noted previously in this thread, I'm in the second category above. This "skunk" thing can be a real problem if I let it. While I'd love to go out every trip and repeatedly slip the Frabil under trophies, it's not realistic. But when I truly believe I'm in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing, and don't make contact . . those trips sure feel awfully skunk-ish. A-Jay

  18. This trip is squarely positioned directly around a Super New Moon. When the Full Moon or New Moon occurs during the Moon's closest approach to Earth, its perigee, it is often called a supermoon. We'll be fishing two full days before, of course that day and then three days after. No clue if it will help or hurt but it certainly sounds cool. ? A-Jay
  19. That is a Super Tough Call for me. And while I can respect the quest for knowledge and an inquiring mind, I have a real fear that making this declaration of a "Favorite" would only serve to upset "The Bass Gods". Which could have serious detrimental consequences on my future endeavors. And I want No Part of that action. So I'm standing pat with my original response. I like ALL big bass. A-Jay
  20. Why are largemouth so much more popular than smallmouth? Probably a few answers to this one. Which all seem to have been answered rather succinctly above. Brown bass are what I target most because this area produces trophies. But if the same could be said about green bass locally, I would certainly find at least equal time for them as well. I just really like fishing for big bass; brown, green and in a past life, even striped. And trophy bass of any type are all hard to find/catch and in my book they all fight plenty hard enough for me. 23. Sad day indeed. I think you're on the right track with the plaque. Good Idea. Inserting a small rod/dowel into both ends of the break may assist to facilitate the repair for display. Selecting a photo or two to add to the 'mount' might be a nice touch. I have the stick my Dad fished when I was a boy as well; circa 1968. Your post has inspired me to do something along these lines accordingly this project will be added to this winter's To Do List. Thanks Doc. A-Jay
  24. Really sorry to hear this. Hope the mending is quick and complete. A-Jay
  25. A topic that always spawns much debate - on a few levels. My version is a bass that’s landed relatively quickly and then released quickly will have enough energy to fight the buoyancy and go back under. If it swims down to the approximate depth where it was caught, the air bladder will deflate and symptoms will go away. A bass that’s held in a livewell, for a derby or otherwise, might struggle to stay submerged. After some time, it gets exhausted and rolls upside down. If released in this condition the bass usually flounders at the surface and then runs the risk of being clipped by a boat or eaten by predators. Some of the methods employed by anglers to combat this include: Side fizzing, where a hypodermic needle is inserted in the swim bladder just behind the pectoral fin. Mouth fizzing, where the needle is inserted at the back of the mouth. Deep release or “caging.” Instead of being released at the surface, fish are placed in a weighted cage with an open bottom. The cage is lowered to the desired depth and pulled up, leaving the fish behind. I have no opinion on any of the above as to it's level of effectiveness or safety to a bass as I do not have the experience to form one. I just let the deepest bass go and they seem to swim off strong never to be seen again. YMMV A-Jay
