Fattys on camera (video added of 30lb bag)
Nicely Done Dude ! I'd be thinking about crawling a big Hudd around on the bottom right about now - especially on the juice. Might need a bigger net though . . . Thanks for sharing the video. A-Jay

How long to become a good angler?
I do not fish competitively however getting out on new & especially bigger water and producing results is very satisfying. Having success on places that offer different types of bass habitat and require an adaptive approach can help one feel confident & excited about the prospects rather than anxious & mostly lost - which is often seriously detrimental to success, it is to mine for sure. As for being 'good' - like you said, that's a relative term. One thing's for sure "I'm an excellent driver". A-Jay

Is exposing rods to the cold bad for them?
As much as we are both in a deep state of bass fishing hibernation ~ My rods spend the vast majority of it in the garage as well. Temps hang around 30 all winter out there - never recognized any ill effects to them from it. Wish I could say the same for myself . . . . A-Jay

casting mechanics
I've been a two hand caster forever. Spawned from years Surf Casting. Heaving 9, 10, 11 & 12 foot surf rods and a 3 ounce bucktail into a 25 mph wind all night - is work. If you've not done it - give it a try, let me know how it goes . . . Few years of that, handling even the stoutest bass gear feels like a toy. Still, I love to chunk & wind and being efficient is the name of the game - learning to cast from either side helps as well. This is what it looks like for me. ~ Here I'm throwing a 3/4 oz spinnerbait with a 7'4" composite stick - that loads nicely I might add. A-Jay

Confused on what drop shot rod to get
Thank You for the offer - I really appreciate it - Probably will not be on St Clair - as I've got some pretty decent sized local residents I'm looking to introduce myself to - (don't tell anyone ) As for the Novi show, I attended the first two days of it last year (got a room). I was checking out a potential (and eventual) new rig. Did see all of Zona's & KVD's presentations while I was there - even got to to do a little Q & A with them after each. Pretty Cool. And for some reason, I kept bumping into that nice young lady with the wheel barrel full of ice & rice soda . . . Enjoy the show. A-Jay

Pros and cons of travel rods
Fenwick introduced the "Methods Series" of spinning & casting travel rods a few years back. Product performs well above it's price point. Invaluable south of the border. With two of these there is quite a bit of versatility & effectiveness. A-Jay

Smallmouth Bass and Topwater colors
Bait Color for topwater smallies only seems important To Me ~ Type (walking, popping, wake or prop bait) size, shape & profile as well as where & how I'm presenting it, seems to determine if I get bit much more than color. Sometimes, a walking bait is the deal, other times it's a popper, wake or a prop bait. Some times they are just eating off the top and I can throw anything with results. But rarely have I seen a situation where only ONE color of a productive topwater bait is the only deal - if white works - so does black. If chrome works so does gold - If Perch works so does most anything else. So as long as I'm able to tune in the what they are willing to eat, and have confidence in the color I choose, If there is going to be a topwater bite, I seem to do OK. If I believe smallies are going to commit to a surface bite - I'd be fine with fishing the right size & profile bait, in a manner that would illicit a strike and let you pick the color . . . . . because when it's fished at the right time & place, I don't think it matters. So get some that you like. A-Jay
