South Florida Canals bait/lures/rigs help.
I've fished the C-13 between 31st ave and the spillway, and gotten a few largemouths (also fought and lost a peacock.) I've talked with some folks who claimed they've gotten slot snook on the east side of the spillway also, and it wouldn't surprise me. My catches there were on Texas rigged stick worms and a bass pattern Creme Mad Dad Minnow.

Fort Lauderdale Peas
I haven't had much luck in the C-11 along Griffin rd, but the canals that feed into it have been better places for me. In the C-11, there is some good small snook action between the turnpike and Davie road. I'm a novice with peas myself, just got my first one this spring and have been trying to find a dependable way to catch them.

Fishing in the rain (South Florida)
Fished this afternoon in a light drizzle. Saw a few nice peacock bass, but couldn't get them to bite. Caught a bunch of mayan cichlids who weren't as shy. Going to try the ocean tomorrow, they're definitely biting out there this week!

Lol, it's a weird little beast! Said to be a good food source in it's native country, but I wouldn't know how they taste...

Multispecies canal catches - don't know if there's such a thing as an invasive grand slam, but this might come close: Mayan ciclid: jaguar guapote: tilapia (quite a big one, took a worm...) Got a few snook also: Failed to land a decent sized peacock on the same day...

South Florida Bass rod setup
I'm a bit of a minimalist and use two spinning rigs for everything - Fenwick Eagle medium fast/medium light 6'0" , Penn Battle II 1000 6lb braid - my main rig, I've caught everything from bass to snook and tarpon on it. Penn Squadron 7'0, moderate fast/light, Penn Fierce 3000 12lb braid - my inshore rig, use it occasionally for bass or when I think I might get a snook or tarpon.

West Broward county (FL) rock quarry lakes
Using google maps satellite view, I found a series of lakes that looked promising for fishing on foot along US27 north of Griffin road. I fished in two of them last weekend and found that they appear to be former rock quarries. The largest of them seems to have a shallow east side with some grass beds, but the water level was a bit high and we couldn't get very far without getting into deep muck. This one looks like it might be more accessible after it dries out a little. We made a number of casts here, but didn't have any luck. Next we moved up to the northernmost lake, which is just south of I-75 and visible from US27. This lake is very clear, and we could see lots of fingerling bass along the shoreline. The lake is also very deep and plummets straight down from the shore, with almost no shallows except for a few sections at the south and north ends. I caught a handful of small bass on an unweighted Yum Dinger, and my buddy came up empty using some kind of soft lizard. There are three additional smaller lakes in the stretch between Griffin and I-75, I might check those out in the future. Has anyone here fished these lakes, and if so, how do you get the bigger bass? Are there likely to be any large bass in these deep rock pits?

Greetings from sunny South Florida!
Hello all, Just wanted to check in and introduce myself. I'm a lifelong fisherman who has spent a long time fishing salt water, but I've recently come back to freshwater fishing after a 20+ year break. I've been having a lot of luck fishing from shore in the lakes and canals in my area (near Ft Lauderdale,) and I found this forum while looking for info on peacock bass. I've never caught one (or a snakehead, or a number of the invasive-but-fun species that have exploded in number since I was last paying attention,) hoping to change that very soon with some advice from the BR crew. See you around!
