  1. wow, i've never heard of that happening before. i'm very happy with my daiwa spinning reels...in fact, i switched from shimano to all daiwas for my spinning setups.
  2. yeah, they're nowhere as soft as real senkos nor do they sink as fast (less salt content?). still, i don't that i'd call them *really* stiff. i have a zillion stick baits though so i think i've only fished the freefall worms once that i can remember.
  3. they DO have that. it's called the 'freefall worm'...i have a few bags. http://www.mannsbait.com/index.asp?Pagename=Hardnose
  4. okay, i edited my post to remove the word "hate"
  5. the metal end caps on my abu-garcia rods drive me nuts...they scratch easily and the rods slide out from under themselves on hard floors. the sideplate bulge on my quantum catalyst always dug into my palm...never felt right and sold it. i dislike the green color of my curados...looks awful on my dobyns champion rods and my red powells. the little grooves on the handles of my zillion reels collect gunk and nearly impossible to keep clean, even with a new toothbrush. the chrome thumb bars on my revo reels get discolored from use, resulting in a thumb-shaped splotch. and, for whatever reason, the tops of my revos prone to rashing even though i baby my gear. btw, i love my citica Es too...so much so that i put curado E gears in them to get the speeds i wanted plus the core 100MGFV handles on them with the big septon knobs. i know it doesn't make any sense to put $60 worth of upgrades on a $120 reel when that same money could net me curados but, like i said, i don't like the green color of my curados.
  6. jigging_it, IMHO, that is so not worth it. i've changed the ratio on many of my citicas and curados but, let me tell ya, it ain't cheap. by the time you get the main gear, pinion gear, key washers and appropriate drag discs, plus shipping and tax, you're looking at about $30. between 6.3:1 and 7.0:1 gear ratio is not that huge a difference.
  7. the spinning tournament ZX is made by daiwa...says so right on the box and in their web product description. the casting version is made by pinnacle i believe. it looks like a rebadged pinnacle solene (so are bass pro shop's tourney special and megacast reels...if you look at their profile and contouring, they're all identical).
  8. i have one in the 2500-size and love it. for the money, i don't think there's a better buy. something about that reverse-tapered spool really allows for long distances on the cast. very smooth drag and the line management is better than most of the other spinning reels i've used or owned.
  9. I like this idea. Is there any reason this would be a bad idea? i can think of only one: if you get spooled, the braid can get cut by the sharp edges of the holes.
  10. if the spool is turning while the line is going out, the drag is slipping. if the spool is not turning but line is still going out, the line is slipping. i'm much more inclined to believe it is the latter as electrical tape gets compacted and loses its gripability. a few yards of mono backing is much more effective. besides, electrical tape leaves gummy residue behind.
  11. steve, over at TT, i meant that 832 sinks only after running my thumbnail over it underwater to get all the air bubbles off it the first time before it will s-l-o-w-l-y sink after breaking the surface tension. in normal casting/fishing, i dunno how that will actually play out but i would not count on it to sink like fluoro does. mr. mallard, i actually like a little bit of stiffness ("body") in my braid...usually, the limper the line, the more prone it is to wrap around the guides.
  12. I think a green Daiwa Zillion would look cool. Just sayin' the green ain't so bad...it's the logo on the side that looks cheesy. and to me, gold accents is SO 1980's
  13. haha...wait till you see their anniversary edition baitcasting reel! it's in the 2011 catalog i received a few days ago but not yet online. it is a green daiwa zillion ;D
  14. you guys that bash powerpro crack me up. sure, powerpro isn't as smooth as the others. BUT, it is strong, available everywhere and THIN (yes, i know they're all rated with the same diameter but i've had them all and PP is definitely thinner than the others). most telling, look at the price difference: sufix 832 costs 40 percent more than PP and fireline costs 52 percent more than PP current prices from *** for 300 yard spools of 50 pound test: powerpro $25 berkeley fireline $38 sufix performance $39 sufix 832 $35 don't compare a honda accord to a BMW 3-series :
  15. for $30 more, i'd get the updated 2011 version: https://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=10210554&cmCat=WISHLIST it's black instead of gold and has a carbon fiber handle.
  16. i've done it before and i could not notice that it felt unbalanced or anything detrimental. however, i wasn't very good with only one brake so i quickly switched back to 2.
  17. TT recently posted a review on this rod: http://www.tackletour.com/reviewsquarebill.html
  18. am i the only one here that read that he scratched the epoxy and not the blank? i can't believe all this doom and gloom over a scratch on the epoxy!
  19. if the blank itself is okay, don't worry about it. i even have a few rods with gouges into the blank that i keep expecting to snap but they just keep humming along. i have snapped two rods while fishing in my lifetime but both were in absolutely perfect condition. you just never know...
  20. sorry but shimano doesn't make lefty 5:1 gears that fit the E-series
  21. yup, i agree completely. i always start out saying that i'll simply turn the handle slower but i keep forgetting. a low-speed reel allows me to crank at a pace i don't have to think about.
  22. if you wouldn't buy it as the wright & mcgill sabalos, why would you buy it just because they change the colors to black and yellow and slap skeet's name on it?
  23. i think the 5.2 PQ would be a good option for you. however, you should be aware that the 4.7 and 5.2 PQs don't have the perforated spool...it has a deeper spool with a solid arbor: (ignore the carbonlite handle i installed on it) it holds 30 more yards of 12# line than the other PQ models (a fact not reflected on their website nor the print catalog). i have the 4.7 PQ and can confirm that it does not cast light lures as well as the daiwa zillion crazy cranker or the curado E5 but, hey, we're talking about a sub-$90 reel here. i like slow reels for all of my crankin' needs as i like to wind fast...it just suits my fishing style.
  24. i agree about the curado E septon knobs. they are by far the grippiest, best-shaped knobs i've fished with and i've fished with a lot of different reels. however, they will not fit on your handle nor does shimano sell them separately (i've tried). surprisingly, the knobs from the bass pro shops pro qualifier are very good. they're not as round as the curado E knobs but they're still meaty and grippy. they're even directional like the curado knobs (e.g., right-handed knobs are different than left-handed knobs). i replaced the foam knobs on my carbonlite handles with the PQ knobs and they work and feel great. i'm almost positive they'd fit your patriarch XT handle. i can post a pic if you're interested.
  25. most of the suggested rods are split grip and/or foam handled.
