  1. If a guy isn't skilled enough to use pline cxx and baitcasters with plastics I don't want him running the country. ;D
  2. I was throwing a swimbait that weighs over 2 ounce but with lighter stuff it would probably cause problems. First swimbait setup and wanted something I could count on if I hook a big pike or muskie and cxx is pretty d**n strong. Been pretty succesful at catching bass for the short time I've had it. Plus cxx is cheaper than alot of quality lines out there. I do agree there is a difference in 15 and 17. With 15 I can spool up and go fishing with zero problems, with 17 usually take a hard snag or few fish to get it broke in or it seems that way then it works great but 15 is strong enough for a standard bass rod.
  3. They have a 1 year warranty and St. Croix does the work I was told.
  4. Sitting 70 yards away from a turkey you roosted the night before on an early april morning with a light rain coming down waiting for the sun to rise and the bird to gobble is more relaxing then sitting inside and cleaning to me. I can think of several other examples too.
  5. I was fishing 25# cxx last night when it was under 40 degrees with a light rain coming down. No problems what so ever. I've used 15 and 17 pound several times when it was at least that cold with no problems. Hear all these problems about cxx and I've never had a problem. Must be the Wisconsin Air.
  6. Anybody use them? Visited there store few weeks ago and handled them and they seemed very nice. Guy working there said they were made by diawa and comparing them side to side with daiwas they seemed the same. Always liked daiwa reels. Will probably buy a new spinning set up in the near future and think I'll go St. Croix rod and reel.
  7. Interesting fact but That really proves nothing as far as what works best for big fish though. Swimbaits haven't been popular very long and alot of trophy fisherman throwing the really big stuff aren't keeping 13 pounders for studies.
  8. What are you throwing and what rod and reel you using to throw it? I'd recommend pline cxx 15# though. Its tough as they get.
  9. I fish a couple different ponds from shore alot and I kinda got stuck in a rut this summer using weightless plastics. I was catching a ton of fish and the occasional nice one but I got burned out doing the same things and catching the same fish. I recently have started throwing swimbaits and its been a blast. Throwing a baby wake at night and catching much better than average sized bass is the most fishing fun I've had in a while. Mattlures baby bass is the swimbait I started with and a pretty good choice, it can be thrown on regular gear and catches some nice fish.
  10. What do teachers that depend on computers to teach and $40 swimbait rods have in common? Neither one is the right tool for the job.
  11. x-rap just cause its readily available and catches fish for me. If I fished them more I'd probably see what the japenese baits have to offer.
  12. Blood dosen't drip back and up that deer has gotta be moving when that pic was taken I say real.
  13. I haven't been using swimbaits for a very long time but the short time I've been doing it this is what I've found.Mattlures soft baits are all good for smallies. I've caught the most off baby bass in smallmouth but thats probably cause I've used the most crappie, gill, perch and walleye have all produced. Hudd shad catch em too. I plan to get some 6 inch hudds and try them I bet they work. Next time I'm at a good smallie spot I'm going to throw my 3:16 baby wake and see what happens.
  14. May I ask what rod you used for lighter lure? What is its lure weight range marked on the rod? I can cast equally good with my mh avid and my mh legend elite both by St.Croix. Also both 7 foot. I don't know off the top of my head the low end they are rated for but I know the high end is 1 ounce. Think the daiwa zillion has more to do with it than anything.
  15. I cast zoom trick worms weightless with a 3/0 ewg on a mh St.Croix casting rod with 15 pound cxx and a daiwa zillion. Tt goes about as far as I can cast it on a medium light spinning real with 8 pound cxx and a diawa spinning real don't remember the model. Thats probably lighter than what you are planning to throw.
  16. Something to do with how a fish swims that relates to swimbaits. Thats what your good at. Might as well do something you enjoy and will use.
  17. Go to a shop that knows what there talking about to figure out your draw length. Look at parker for a slightly less expensive but very nice alternative to the bowtech, mathews, or hoyt.
  18. Perch. Natural color that bass are used to eating in the waters I fish works great in clear water and the flashy orange belly with dark back works great in dark water.
  19. You have to weigh a fish on a scale to know exactly what that particular fish weighs. As George Welcome pointed out, bass from different regions vary significantly in shape and density. This chart estimates "averages" based on sampling done by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation measured across New York State. ** Individual results will vary ** 8-) Average size on 35 inch walleyes. I've never heard of anyone catching a walleye that long and they have enough there get an accurate average length. :
  20. I use 9 inch jelly worms occasionally and they produce pretty well and the smell of them makes it that much better.
  21. I fish pits all the time. My favorite smallie lake is a old iron ore mine. Pond here in town which is where I fish the most is a old gravel pit its got alot of nice largemouth bass in it. I fish both of these places by casting parallel to shore and working the bait along the shore. Look for submerged tree to fish to. Weightless or weighted tex rigged plastics depending on the depth work best for numbers of bass I like fat ikas and senkos, others work well too. For better size bass try a mattlures baby bass fished parallel to shore on a slow steady retrieve.
  22. Thats a good idea. You could get a baby bass or east coast series for what your going to get the magic swimmer or sammy for.
  23. They ship fast thats for sure. I ordered a baby wake perch late sunday and got it on wed from cali to wis thats d**n fast. It looks real good but I'm waiting on a rod and real to get here so I can throw it.
