  1. yessir, that was it! No more backward spinning handle. Tried to put it to the test today but the fish weren't biting
  2. Took this reel apart for the 2nd time, cleaning up any grease I may have missed the first time and further inspecting the operation of every moving part. Dangit, everything looks good, none of the grease was gummed up, nothing looks worn. Tonight I focused on that anti-reverse pawl (#22). It's not worn, the anti-reverse ratchet (#40) is not worn and all looks good. Everything is engaging/disengaging as it should. All the parts are there as I compared it to the diagram during reassembly to ensure nothing was missing. Once back together it functions smoothly, engages/disengages fine, but the handle will still spin backwards if I give it a nice solid cast (won't do it on light casts). If you understand how that anti-reverse pawl grabs the anti-reverse ratchet then it seems to defy the laws of physics that the handle can ever spin backwards. I can't ever get it to spin backwards by hand, just with a solid cast. I'm sitting here thinking "how can this be???" The anti-reverse pawl in this reel has a thin brass(?) jacket around it exactly like this one. At the top are "ears" that fit around the ratchet to hold the pawl dog centered over the ratchet teeth. I am wondering if the ears have spread thereby allowing the dog to slide aside and the handle then allowed to spin backwards? I did not think of this while I had it open and am not going back in tonight. But this is the only thing I can think of...something is allowing that pawl dog to come off the ratchet momentarily. Oddly this model does not use a pawl spring and I looked at it closely and think the shape of the case prevents it from moving out of position. But possibly loose "ears" allow it some side to side play... gawd I hope that is it.
  3. Woot! I'm good! Dobyns 7' MH/F in my truck already and the Daiwa Fuego reel arriving Thursday! I'm thinking of initially spooling it up with 10-lb mono until I get the hang of it considering I haven't used a casting reel much the past decade (or more). Then maybe I'll switch to a braid like I have done with my spinning reels.
  4. I asked for advice and believe I am taking it. I think I'm going to get a Fuego/Dobyns combo instead. Sounds like a solid value proposition. Right now looking to see if a shop around here carries those rods so I can decide by feel which one I want.
  5. I've been doing more and more bass fishing the past year using my heavier crappie spinning gear. In my youth I really enjoyed a baitcaster for bass fishing so now I want to get a modern baitcasting rod and and reel. Price/quality wise I typically get spinning reels like Shimano Sahara class around $60 - $75 and rods around $70 -$90, always looking for a deal or coupon before I buy. I'm not a brand snob although have mostly Shimano, Daiwa and Pflueger reels right now and appreciate that they have lasted years with just a little TLC. It is with a little admitted trepidation that I'm eyeing the following KastKing gear as my main baitcasting rig where I will mostly be throwing spinnerbaits, plastic worms and jigs. The market has become so specialized and broad and I admit I haven't kept pace with the fads. KastKing Megajaws 9.1:1 baitcasting reel ($65 - $70) KastKing Speed Demon Pro 7'3" Medium Fast Jig/Worm (~ $105) Any killer sales/deals on a significantly better reel or rod that brings it into my price range?
  6. Ok. First, thanks for all the help for me trying to keep this old real going. This afternoon I disassembled, cleaned, greased and or oiled inspected and put it all back together. Nothing stood out to me as being a problem end it went back together just as I took it apart. I went outside to test it and the first few casts were OK, but it doesn’t do it with every single cast. But it is clearly still doing it, usually on casts I am putting a little bit more oomph behind it. The handle will spin backwards. I can never make it spin backwards by hand even on cast where it spins quickly in reverse on its own. When it spins backwards on its own I still cannot turn the handle backwards myself. I assume there is some slop or weak spring causing this. I doubt I can find a replacement spring but would try to find one if that schematic can be shared with me.
  7. I'm sorry - I was wrong about the direction it spins. I just cast with it and the handle does spin backwards when I cast. So weird. Other than the handle spinning backwards when casting everything else feels right. The lever to disengage the reel for a cast feels good and it engages clean when I start to turn the handle. It feels good turning the handle - doesn't feel gummed up anywhere. I'll open it up and clean/grease it but was hoping to identify something specific to look for that could be causing this before I open it up.
  8. forward. At times it just feels like the casting rotational momentum is causing it to spin, but that theory doesn't seem to hold when I cast it perfectly horizontal (no spin). it didn't used to do this
  9. it seems to just spin through it's own momentum. If I hold the rod in front of me and disengage the spool, the lure drops and the handle does not turn. It's just when casting does the handle seem to develop some rotting momentum. And it only does it if I hold the reel off of a perfect horizontal hold. Normally when I cast my wrist rotates and the reel ends up being rotated a bit. But if I hold it perfectly horizontal then it doesn't do it. I find holding it perfectly horizontal really hard when actually fishing.
  10. Mainly interested in the length or amount of line. Is 75 yards a good amount?
  11. The "handle doesn't spin when letting out a lure" just means when I let it freespool. The lure will drop and the handle doesn’t turn (as it shouldn’t). But if I whip out a cast the handle spins as if the something inside is engaging it.
  12. I took my Daiwa Magforce MA10G baitcaster fishing after letting it sit a few years. It otherwise works great but the handle spins with the spool when I cast. I believe this extra mass then slows down the spool and it isn’t casting very far. The handle does not spin while letting a bait slowly drop from the tip, just when casting. The drag and spool control all seem working fine. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
  13. I recently noticed my older Pleuger Gold Medalist Pro spinning real (a lot like their Trion or Asaro reels) drag barely makes any noise when the drag is working. It’s there but super quiet. I double checked that the spool was on evenly and the little clicky piece on the bottom of the spool looks fine. Any suggestions? I just don’t want to be fighting a fish and not hear if the drag is slipping.
  14. Thanks for bringing this up as Ive been doing a lot of braid shopping and planning to switch from mono. I see a 1095 yard spool of KastKing yellow for $30, the same price as 300 yard spools for others. I don’t need that much but having it on hand will help me respool sooner with fresh line.
  15. I’m switching numerous spinning reels over to braid and trying to not have small amounts of leftover braid on my reel filler spools. Just feels like wasted money when there is 25 to 50 yards left over that can’t be used to refill a spool. I have a few 150 yard filler spools to use so was planning to put 75 yards each reel. I literally was going to string all 150 yards out in a field, snip it at the midpoint, then spool it up onto 2 different reels. If I don’t do that i’m Likely to spool up more that 75 yards onto the first reel, then have less on the 2nd reel. I also have a couple 300 yard spools on order. I can walk out 75 to 100 yards and spool it up which will let me at least keep better track of the amount remaining. Guess i’m Hoping someone has a better idea. Thanks
  16. My town only has a Field&Stream and today their spinnerbait selection was disappointing. Who has a good online catalog of spinnerbaits at decent prices?
  17. It's been my go-to crappie fishing line on 4 reels for a decade. Very happy with it. I've used both the 4 and 6 lb. and see little difference.
  18. I joined over 10 years ago. I’m kind of a big deal
  19. Looks like I can buy an Ego small rubber replacement net for only $16 - direct from Ego. I am leaning towards that at the moment
  20. I really like the idea of that collapsible net and will be checking it out further. Thanks! Initially it seems a bit big, but maybe that's a non-issue since it collapses down so well. For comparison this is my existing net. Size-wise I'm still happy with it, just hoping to either replace the netting with a rubber style net or just buy a whole new net. This one has a 10" handle and a hoop opening that is around 16" long and 12" wide.
  21. I fish in a 8’ Bassbaby and space is limited. I currently use a short handled landing net that is the right size/length but it’s got a tangly net. I’d like to identify a good replacement, something with a rubber style net that isn’t as tangly. Pretty much have to shop online as no decent stores near me. Suggestions?
  22. Thanks for the ideas guys. For now I have attached a heavy plastic edge that I repurposed from something I found at Lowes. I don't even recall exactly what it's intended purpose was ? but it was cheap and works. If this fails then something like a carpeted 2x4 will do the trick.
  23. I would try that Smackdown but they don't seem to have a HiVis option in their 10 lb spool
  24. I recently gained bank access to a small 5 acre pond. The first few trips occurred during fairly mild weather and I was excited to find the pond had a decent supply of quality fish. I caught 6 to 8 fish in just a few hours across several visits, most fish caught nearer to the bank. Then earlier this week the weather turned cold again. I skipped the first couple days of the cold snap but have gone twice the past few days. Each trip was a skunk, not even a bite. As before I continued to throw the salamander and smaller jigs that previously produced, and because of the pond's small size I was able to target shallow, medium and deep depths. I figured the fish had gone deep, but if they did they had lockjaw. I switched baits and colors, even throwing a small rattle trap. Any suggestions on what the pattern might be for a small pond cold snap bite?
  25. I’m braid shopping, something light like 15-lb or even 10. What makes this stuff better than say Power Pro?
