im missing a heavy rod and im thinking of buying the MBR 844. this rod would be used for 1/2 -3/4 oz t-rigged plastics, jigs, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, frogs and light swimbaits. my main concern is 1oz swimbaits like the king shad and Spro BBZ-1. i wont be using these much but id like to know that the rod can handle them as i cannot justify buying a swimbait rod. how do you guys like your 844 for these applications? am i asking too much of the rod with the swimbaits? thanks -z

not sure but make sure the limited weights and hook sizes are what you want before you make a trip out there... (3/16oz is the heaviest and only available in a 5/0) i think i ordered mine from ***. i love that place. gives me an excuse to spend over $50 for the free shipping

im looking to buy a spinning rod to use with 1/4oz jigs and maybe some 5/16oz eakins jigs. i will be using 3-3.5 inch trailers like the craw papi. im thinking about buying the BSR 803 but the lure rating max is 5/16oz and i estimate a 1/4oz jig with trailer would be around 3/8oz. does anyone use this rod for 1/4oz jigs? what other rods should i be looking at? thanks -z

the description on loomis' website says that this rod is perfect for 3/8 oz jigs. a 3/8 oz jig with a trailer will weigh just over 5/8 oz (thanks Rooster) which is the max on this rod's lure rating. do 3/8 oz jigs with trailers feel a little too heavy for this rod? thanks -z

this might sound like a stupid question but, have you ever skipped a rock? try to do the same with the lure. you want to do a side arm cast parallel with the water. to practice id use a spinning rod and crouch down so youre close to the water. do a side arm cast so that the bait flys just above the water's surface. when it loses altitude, it should skip if the angle in which it hits the water's surface isnt too verticle (closer to 90 degrees than 180...) this is easier to do with plastics, at least for me. id recommend a big tube with spinning gear to practice. hope this makes a little sense.

X2 these jigs are cheap so you can afford to lose some, small trailer will get you more bites. stick with natural colors (green pumpkin, pumpkin, watermelon) or dark colors for muddy water. good luck

great post. ive always wondered about that but never had a scale handy. if you get a minute and dont mind, could you weigh out some plastics? ive always wondered how much senkos, worms and jig trailers weigh.

anything but shimano is crap depending on your budget i'd go for sahara, symetre, saros or stradic in the 2500 size. i think the daiwa tierra is pretty good for the money too. i have used all of these reels and highly recommend them.

alot on here dont believe rattles help but i think they can. then again, they might spook the fish in certain conditions. i only use rattles in water i can only see about 8 inches or less into, with a big black jig and trailer. a good time to test it for yourself would be when they are not hitting your regular jig.

id say a good quality graphite rod matters more than the line.

spinning gear 95% of the time for me. BC is used for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and heavier jigs

lets say you only have two rods on boat, same power and length but one is F and one is XF. for what lures/presentations would you pick up the XF over the F and vice versa? thanks -z

to build confidence, definately go with finesse jigs. id get maybe a small 1/4 jig with a 3" trailer. bitsy bug jigs are cheap and great to start with. use a matching yum craw papi trailer.

ive used worms as jig trailers but id use a jig with a larger hook. to them i think it looks like something feeding off the bottom that would make an easy meal. i dont think there are many things that bass wont eat if theyre the right size other than lures theyve seen alot of. i dont think the jig and worm is something alot of bass are conditioned to. try it when they stop hitting the jig/pig or t-rigged worm.

in stained water i will use dark colors. if i can see the bait at 18 inches down or so, ill prob use natural colors. of course any color will work, especially if you land it on the basses nose, but i believe a dark color jig with a large trailer is easier for them to spot from a distance in heavily stained - muddy water.

will you be taking all 5 spinning rods on each outing? i own 8 spinning rods and 5 reels that i swap out as needed.

ill have to go with t-rigged plastic.

i like to use a white swim jig with a white or smoke single tail grub trailer. a white bucktail jig with a white soft plastic paddle type bait works well for rockfish.
