Ike #6 Hated Athlete
Well, like him or not, judging by all the posts about him in these forums he's clearly the most popular by a landslide. This exact same topic comes up over and over again about every 3 weeks, and ends up being about 3-4 pages of posts long. Clearly people love to talk about him. Call his personality what you like, hate him or love him, but obviously he's at the top of everyone's minds. GQ missed the bus on their topic. It should have been the top ranked most talked about sports personalities. Would've been a different list, but Ike surely would have made both lists!

Does anyone have a stereo in their bass boat?
I have a satellite AM/FM radio with CD changer in my boat. It was a requirement per my wife. She had to have a way to listen to NASCAR races while fishing. The little black disk to the left is the antenna. When we're not listening to NASCAR, we either have it on as background music, listen to comedy, or don't have it on at all. Can't stand those water skiiers with the bass tubes and incredibly loud music. It's just plain disrespectful to everyone around them. Here's how we mounted the stereo. The speakers are under the consols.

Who is the better fisherman?
Who is the better fisherman? My father. He introduced me to sport, showed the patience to teach me, and made me realize what's really important in life. We've had some terrific memories over the decades. Tournaments are fun, no doubt. But when you look at the big picture, they're merely a weekend blip with strangers during a lifetime of memories with your family.

Re: question about the site
In your privacy settings, check to be sure "block referrer URL" (or something like that) is turned OFF. I'd hedge my bets it's turned on. I could write a book on this. There's a very slight risk that images can run hidden embedded code scripts via destructiveX...so some firewall manufacturers took the easy way out by blocking referring URLs in an attempt to block the scripts. Frequently if ref is blocked by the firewall, perfectly acceptable images won't be served, so it is an extremely inelegant way used by some fire walls to intercept what " might be" dodgy images...dumb response to the problem IMO But the short story is blocking your referring URL also blocks images on our site. There is a very, very slight risk by disabling this "feature" while surfing the Web, but if you have the latest Windows security patches, there's no risk at all. All of our images are safe. Blocking the referrer in a browser/firewall/proxy/cache is sort of a misconfiguration that should be done only after careful consideration and when deemed necessary. I would agree that someone could conceivably come up with a reason why it would be a good idea to have all referrers blocked all the time (though I can't think of any at the moment), but those aren't usually the users that actually have referrers blocked. Most of them have it blocked because they've installed software that does this and they are not aware, or because they believe it provides them some level of security or privacy (which really isn't the case).

Re: question about the site
What browser are you using? I noticed Kendammit is using Avant, which this site doesn't support.

Re: question about the site
Clear your cache, close your browser and then reopen it. See if that fixes it. Also, are you using a firewall or proxy server? If so, turn them off and see what happens. What is your host provider?

Re: thegreatestfisher
I've deleted most of his posts and sent a stern warning. IP's are automatically logged, so it's painstakenly easy for me to ban him, if it comes to that. But I have a hunch he's just looking for respect -- just going about it the wrong way. I gave him some pointers, the choice is in his hands.

Is it just me .....
Well, it looks as though spammers found a vulnerability in the server we're hosted on, and they exploited it to send massive amounts of spam. So much so it brought the server down. I'm not convinced the problem is completely solved just yet, but we got it under control right now. Needless to say, we're checking EVERYTHING to see if there's anything we missed. In the midst of it all, I took advantage of the situation to rev up the server, so yes, we're flying fast now.

Is it just me .....
Yes, there is a problem with the server. And yes, I've been working on it. Apologies for the problems.

School paper
If you want to broaden the audience a little more beyond just anglers, you could do a paper on the effects of increased phosphorus and nitrogen in lakes & rivers. Translated in English: the effects of development and increased population = increased yard fertilizers, car washing, erosion, pollution, etc. It all flows into into lakes and rivers which, in turn, increases the levels of phosphorus and nitrates. This makes a lake turn eutrophic far faster than nature ever could.

Attention AOL users & Newsletter Subscribers
I called AOL again today. They said BassResource.com is no longer blocked, and is now cleared to send the newsletter. Soo... we're going to give it shot. If you subscribe to our newsletter and are an AOL subscriber, please post here whether or not you received the newsletter. It will be sent tonight, so wait until 1/13 to see if appears in your mailbox. Thanks! Glenn

Attention AOL users & Newsletter Subscribers
I just found out AOL claims to have unblocked our IP address. Of course, they didn't notify me - I had to call them. At any rate, now I need to sign up to be included in their whitelist, which may take a few days. Again, no guarantees, so don't get your hopes up just yet. In the mean time, I suggest y'all quit AOL faster than a hole-shot! :

Guys with docks
In my experience, this is usually the result of the homeowner finding hooks and lures embedded in their dock, boat, and other property on several occassions. Some anglers, out of fear, embarrassment, or lack of etiquette knowledge, simply break off instead of retrieving their lures when they get tangled up. If you were the homeowner, you wouldn't be too pleased either - especially if you found hooks in your boat cover, seats, or ended up stepping on a rusty hook. So I can understand their apprehension. Unfortunately, you end up paying for the mistakes of others when the homeowner comes out to vent on you. At that point, there's no way you're going to convince him you're not going to harm his property. You're not going to "win" the argument. So what can you do? Three things: 1. Carry copies of your state's RCW rules regarding the harrassment of anglers engaged in the legal take of fish (you can find this on your state's .gov website). And if your state allows it, carry a copy of the RCW that states you have the legal right to sue if that homeowner is found guilty of the first RCW. 2. Usually I never have to hand those little pieces of paper out, because I just play deaf, or act like I don't speak English. It's kinda fun to frustrate the snot out of the homeowner that way. By the time he figures out he's been had, you're well on your way to the next dock! 3. Always, always, always untangle your bad casts and retrieve your lures from docks and property. You'll be doing a service to the next angler.

BR.com challenges Charlie Moore- 6/7 update
Agreed. Patience, young Jedi. This is more than a one-on-one challenge, which takes considerably more coordination - especially if he's thinking about inviting pros. Their schedules are set 1-2 years in advance.

Attention AOL users & Newsletter Subscribers
Just to clarify, BassResource.com does NOT use AOL. They are blocking our e-mails coming from us to AOL e-mail addresses. I've been using the Internet long before the Web existed (yes, they're different), and I've never used AOL, CompuServe, Protegy, or any other of those kinds of ISPs.

Attention AOL users & Newsletter Subscribers
Thank you, Bassnut. I do appreciate it. Although I'm not sure if it helped any, at least they're hearing from their subscribers about these complaints. Who knows what else they're blocking without your knowledge? Perhaps hearing from you and other AOL subscribers might make them rethink their policies.
