  1. yeah, i check the lure falling knob before casting. every time i change the lure, i test the fall rate.
  2. i have a question about the weight of a crankbait. the rod that i have can handle a lure 3/8oz-1oz. what is the reason to throw lets say a 3/8oz compared to 3/4oz? is it only weight for longer casts? what is the main reason for different weights if the rod can handle either or? if there was a thread for this already, please guide me there and i will read. no reason to beat a dead horse!!!
  3. last night i went out fishing and every cast that was thrown didnt feel right. about mid cast, the line on the spool felt really loose like it was getting ready to backlash. i checked the brakes, and i have the setting from 1-10 as well as a free setting. i always have mine set at 10. i have also messed with the drag setting but i dont think that the drag would cause this. am i wrong? what else could be the issue? i thought about when i spooled the reel, the line was not tight while spooling but i actually had the line really tight to avoid any sloppiness. unless the line is relaxing/stretching making it looser. any ideas? i did not receive backlash.......yet, but would like to avoid it. :-/
  4. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1246815186 http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/fish-care-in-the-livewell.html i just got finished watching this video that was recommended by Glenn and i have a couple questions. 1. i fish 100% of the time from the shore and dont have a boat or a live well. i never catch fish and keep them, it is more of a catch, admire, and release. if i unhook the fish and set him free, how long after that point could they possibly die? when i release them, they swim off like they are supposed to and all looks fine. but is it really? 2. this video kinda has me paranoid about catching/releasing these fish. i realize it may not feel good to get a hook in the lip but how do i know that they will live after i set them free? if there is no blood present of the release, how much harm are they in once they leave? 3. i also saw a video that shows the correct way to hold a fish, im glad i watched that, very informative. i am guilty of holding a fish horizontally. although i have never caught anyhting of great weight (less than a pound), i now know what not to do. :'( never thought about breaking the jaw. is there a way to know if the jaw is broken. if you dont feel any cracks or breaks how do you know if the jaw is broken? will it heal?? or will the fish die shortly after? hope someone can set me straight :-/
  5. if there was a way to end this thread i would.................... i would like to thank yo ufor the advice on which rod to replace my broken one with. i guess i jumped the gun before contacting BPS. although it was my fault that the rod broke i didn't even think i could return it. i called online customer service and they said i need to mail it in to get "considered" for an exchange. and that would have taken a few weeks. so i decided to take a trip to my local BPS, i explained what happened, (that a smallmouth broke my pole ;D) and the girl didn't even blink. she said we cant give you a new rod but we will replace EVERYTHING, so she said go pick out a combo that is the same. so i did. once i got back up to the counter with the replacement, she asked is it the same, i said ya, ok go ahead and go. she didn't even look at it nor have me sign a receipt or anything :-/. now if i was really that dishonest, i could have picked a rod/reel combo that blew the Extremes out of the water. they would have never known. i am good to go now and again, thanks for the advice.
  6. as of right now i only have the BPS Extreme rod to compare to. (beginner in the whole baitcasting world). how does this compare? i would like a rod that is very sensitive. would this work? i just looked this up and the rod is $40, originally $140
  7. iv'e seen the carrot sticks in BPS but never heard very many people talk about them. i did notice a Shimano Compre for $100. ive heard people say nothing but positive things about those. its looking like the extreme, shimano compre and the st croix mojo bass rods are all the same price. the carrot stick is 50 bucks more but the reviews on it are quite impressive. i may go that route. it wont match my reel but i guess matching will come later : hopefully not out of the water for long :'(
  8. hey all just went fishing a bit ago and out of all the things that could happen, i broke my rod!!! about 6" of the tip of my rod broke right in half :'(. i wish i could say i was pulling in the biggest bass ever but that certainly wasnt the case. as i was leaving to fish the door slammed right on the tip and i was furious >!!! needless to say i still went fishing. figured id worry about this issue later. although i am without a rod (kinda) i was able to land 2 smallies and 1 sunfish in about 30 minutes time. i was extrememly happy about that!!! anyways, for my question. I had an extreme BPS rod that i bought with an extreme rod/reel baitcasting combo around christmas time. it is 6'-6", MH, Fast action, 3/8-1oz lure capability and 10-20lb line i was looking to replace my rod and as many of you know, the prices are crazy rediculous!! with me knowing the rod that i want (specifications) can anyone give me some advice on what rod to get for the money? id like to spend as little as possible but yet still be pleased with the rods results. manufacturer and model number would be great. if i were to replace the rod i broke with the same, it is $100. if im gonna spend the same amount or a little more id like to make sure its worth every dime. replacing a rod on a small budget is not fun. i was reading a post by roadwarrior and he mentioned a 7', M, fast or moderate action rod with a G-Loomis model number. kinda pricey for me right now ($400) any help would be appreciated. :'(
  9. thanks OH-bass614. i will definitley check that out
  10. are there any fishing clubs or even bass clubs in the cincinnati area? if anyone knows of any, id appreciate a little info!! thanks in advance
  11. the last couple times out i have caught a couple SM on a Bomber Square A crank bait. i have tried all baits in my box but the crankbait is delivering!!! heres a link to the crankbait that im using http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_61257____SearchResults
  12. well, im not giving up on it. i'll keep throwing it out and hope for the best
  13. this question is towards people that only buy Gary Yamamoto senko's. during my trip at BPS yesterday i was trying to decide which "senko" worm to buy. i was comparing price, colors and size. i came to this conclusion. the "slurpies" brand looks exacltly the same as the GY senko but yet its a few dollars less. they have the same colors. (so i bought these) i have not yet used these wacky rigged yet but am curious to see if these things actually work like everyone claims. has anyone ever used the slurpies compared to the senko? same results or does it seriously make that much of a difference?
  14. the rod is 6'-6", it can handle a lure weight anywhere from 3/8oz up to 1 oz, it can handle 10-20# test, it is a MH power and Fast action
  15. as for the spinner, no there was no grass anywhere. as it got closer to me i watched it come in just to see if there were any w eeds, tree limbs or anything of that sort weighing it down, nothing though. i can try a smaller weighted lure next time. as for the buzzbait, i will continue to use them but as for now, thats my no-confidence bait!!!! i must say, out of all the things in my tackle box, i have the most success with a little Bomber square A. i have caught a SM every time out with that bait. can we say confidence bait!!!!
  16. i was at BPS yesterday and i bought a couple buzzbaits and a spinner bait. i have a question about each. first, i have an extreme rod/reel, i have #12 yo-zuri hybrid line on it, 6:4:1 gear ratio, with a 60 million extreme rod. here is the link to the 1st spinner bait that i bought, red/black http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15394_100006001_100000000_100006000_100-6-1 i was using this last night and im not sure if i was doing anything wrong or not but it seemed to put a lot of strain on my line while reeling it in. its only a 1/2oz lure. when i say strain, i mean its the feeling like your line is twisted at the tip of the rod and it needs to be untangled. but this wasnt the case. are the double colorado blades to much for this? next, i bought this buzzbait shown in the link below, black http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_74325_100006003_100000000_100006000_100-6-3 i really like the action of this buzzbait but my question is this. does this only attract Largemouth bass? will it attract Smallmouth? i have fished a few buzzbaits over the last few months and i get no response out of it, except the action that i see it put off. a lot of people mention that these baits are excellent bass catchers, but i get no hits at all. any clues?
  17. maybe im naming it incorrectly. i was out one morning around 8:00 am and the water was rather high. i went out a few days later around 2-3pm and the water was significantly lower. i am trying to find where it can tell me when the water is the highest. heck, it could have been cause it rained a few days prior but im not sure. i thought the water lowered and raised at specific times of the day
  18. does anyone know of a site that can tell you what time high tide and low tide is for a given area? i have had better luck fishing during high tide and would like to check rather than driving out there and finding that the tide is low.
  19. For anyone that does not know this.......................... i have been a member of BASS MASTER magazine for about 5 months now. i just received an email from them saying that if i register my BASS MASTER member ID with BPS, i can receive triple points on certain items. when you sign up for the email newsletter, they will send you a list of items that have the triple point bonus. i thought this was very cool, especially when the bait monkey decides to tag along!! show me the bonus points!!!! besides the BASS MASTER magazine being very informative and i think worth the money, it can work in my favor when i take a trip with my son (BM) to BPS!!! ;D
  20. hey all i was going to add on a question to the thread labeled "summer heat" but didnt think i could relate. so i am asking another heat question. as a lot of people know, the midwest/east are nutorious for hot @$$ muggy weather. do bass drop to deeper waters to stay cool? if so, what lures/baits work best during the summer time?
  21. i usually go to weather.com and there is a spot on there where you can typ ein your zip code and it will give you a rough estimate of fishing conditions. i have been basing my fishing trips off that. not sure how accurate it is though :
  22. hey all when deciding to go fishing, do you check local fishing reports to see how the fishing is forecasted for the day or do you just pack up and go fishing?
  23. This question if for anyone that has used or uses Yo-Zuri Hybrid fishing line. the closest place that i can get yo-zuri hybrid fishing line is at BPS which is about 30-40 minutes away. until i can get out that way to get a refill of line, is there an equal to this? there is a dicks right here by my house but they dont carry yo-zuri at all. i usually buy the yo-zuri hybrid, 12lb test, clear. any equals or if not better? i recently ran out of line :'( and need a quick fix to go fishing in the morning!!!!!
