Smallmouth in Northern IL???
I have never caught a smallmouth in my life and I would like to change that this year. Anyone know of any good Small mouth fisheries in the Northern Illinois area, that are accessible for shoreline fishing (I do not have a boat). I know you can catch em' out of the harbors of Lake Michigan in the spring, but other than that I am clueless. HELP ME!!!

Question for carolina riggers
Anything works. Just make sure your leader is long enough. The amount of weight depends on current movement as well as depth. But brand does not. Any bullet weight will do just fine. And the beads and ticker should not matter either. Just make sure the swivel your using has at least the same lb. rating as the line you are using.. I like 10 to 20 lbs more than the line.

Fish Attractant
The Berkley GULP is nice. I like to use it on non scented soft plastics. Just squirt some in the bag. Seems to work well for me.

Any Luck Yet?
It still can get below freezing at night. In fact last week we had a couple days that were around freezing all day. Like I said its overpopulated. We like to say that any knowledge you have about bass fishing does not apply to the Underwriters' Lake. (The lake that is on the campus I work at). Things just dont make sense there. I was catching bass in 5 feet of water just after ice out. The water temps were just above freezing still!!!!!! Anyway today was another great day. Caught the same amount of fish but in twice the time. I caught around 50 in 2 hours yesterday and today it took just over 4 hours to get around the same amount. Probably weather conditions. There was no wind today and much cooler. I was still catching them on the same bait though. The Luck Craft FAT CB BSD-1 Aurora Black. If I could I would bring everyone out here the get in on the action. ITS AWSOME BABY! You cant find fishing like this anywhere else in the state at this point in time. Like I said before.... The rules of bass fishing do not apply to this lake. We are still weeks away from spawn, and the water temps are still way below what they need to be for spawn and for what LMB normally like period. But for some reason they are in water temps they do not prefer and are very active in them. Got the first walleye of the year too. On the same crankbait. 19 inches 2 pounds 2 ounces. Not bad. Well talk to y'all later. May there be good fishing in your future!!

when to use lipless vs. when to use cranks
I like the lipped cranks all year round especially in the spring and fall. But in the summer when the cranks wont do it, the lipless seem to work well. A lake I fish, has more pressure then any other lake I've seen. And during the summer, your lucky to pull out a bass. But this summer I decided to try a lipless there and starting catching fish like no one has seen from that lake. I caught 8 or 9 fish in a couple hours!! Unheard of at that lake. Hopefully I can get the same action this summer!! Good Fishing Everyone!! 8-)

Lures that DON"T work??
Rual, try using them early in the morning and late at night in the shallows that have lot of cover. You should get some reaction strikes. I like the double blade. Moves more water.
