Lets See Those 09 Fishing Pics
Not trying to knock you fisher but, I thought we talked about this same thing last year about trying to take better care of the fish? :-? Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. Seems a bit wrecklees. If that's what has to be done in order to show off your catch, and everyone did it, there wouldn't be any fish left to catch! Rather than go off on a rant, I'll refer to this BR article: http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/fish1.html Handling Fish Compiled with the assistance of Texas Parks & Wildlife biologists David Campbell and Steve Magnelia Permission to print and distribute this information is freely given by BassResource.com Bass are sensitive creatures that can be injured more easily than you might think. Tips for handling fish before you put them in your livewell include the following common sense items: 1. Keep the fish in water as much as possible. Bass can only hold their breathe as long as you can. Wind and other elements can damage their skin, too. Wet your hands before touching the fish so that you don't remove the slime coat that protects the fish from infections and fungus. Don't handle the fish any longer than you have to, and be gentle, don't drop the fish if you can keep from it. Bouncing off the carpet also destroys their protective slime. So I'm guessing rolling it in dirt probably isn't a good thing. Educate yourselves so that future generations can also enjoy the same sport. Actually I believe he said he had to put the fish down so he could get some pliers to get the hook out of the gills. When I said you gotta do what you gotta do, was not referring to taking pictures and weighing fish. If putting the fish down to get some pliers keeps a hook out of my fingers, then i'm going to have to do it once in a while. Don't get me wrong, I am all for preserving our fishing resources. And I do my best to handle fish properly. And I encourage others to do the same.

first time out with new rod/reel - backlash!!!!
Having a boat doesn't matter, but if you are limited to the shore and want to get out deeper, than a spinner is better. That is, unless you are an expert at baitcasters which then you should be able to get one out just as far as a spinning reel. In a boat you can move to the deep spots so it doesnt matter

What kind of reel?

first time out with new rod/reel - backlash!!!!
1. Check the spool tension. Hold the rod at a 45 degree angle and hit the release. You want the lure to just be falling. If your a beginner, it might help to have the tension higher. Have it to where the lure stays still but if you move the knob slightly the lure starts to fall. The spool tension knob is the small knob usually on the same side as the handle. 2. Make sure the backlash control is set properly if you have it. Some are turn knobs ( Quantum ) some are adjustable pins ( Shimano ). 3. Make sure that both settings are set for the conditions outside. If you are casting into the wind. You want your backlash and reel tension a little higher unless you want to use your thumb the control it. That is what I do. 4. Everytime you change lures check the spool tension. Is this your first time ever using a caster?

How many of you are Right handed but use a Left hand retrieve Bait cast reel?
My buddy is the same way. I don't get it. :-?

How many of you are Right handed but use a Left hand retrieve Bait cast reel?
same here. Part of the reason of ownnig a baitcaster is for the ability to cover more water faster and easier. For us right handers we cast with our right hand leaving our left open. Why would you cast with your right hand then hand the rod to your left hand to free your right so you can reel.

Braid for baitcaster question?
Not using backing works when there is a lot of line on the spool. As soon as the line starts going down you will get more backlashes. I would recommend putting backing on. It might just save you some trouble down the road. As far as braid for baitcasters. I use Sufix Performance Braid 30 lb. I will never ever use anything else that is currently out on the market. I have found it works best. I like Power Pro on spinners, but it doesnt spool nice on casters. Sufix is a limper braid than most out there.

2009 Quantum Kinetic Spinning Reel
Just bought one this winter. Paired up with a Cabelas Fish Eage II, 6 foot 6 Medium. Love it, well as much as I can for spinners. I love baitcasters too much. But I needed a nice spinning too. All I had were hand me downs. I like it. Caught my first fish on it too yesterday. Little 2 lb bass. Felt good. Nice action on the rod.

Braid line in clear water
I am probably wrong but I think that it has to do with fishing pressure as well. The lake I normally fish basically has zero pressure. Private lake for employees, and employees friends and family. Crystal clear water. I catch fish on braid all day long everyday. I catch fish there like its nobodies business. Then I will go to another lake by my buddies house and cant get a bite on braid. It is a public county forest preserve lake. Heavily fished, tons of pressure. As soon as you use mono or flouro, BOOM. I am sure there are many other factors. One thing I am for sure about, the fish CAN SEE braid in clear water. Weather or not that it matters that they see it, I dont have the slightest clue.

Whats the story with Dicks only reels?
I have the Diawa Capricorn too. It was my first baitcaster. Great starter reel and still works great. Great product for the money. just don't ever use it now because of my baby. Quantum PT TOUR. The guy at Dick's told me that Dick's is trying to become a bigger fishing store. They want to compete with with Cabelas and Bass Pro. So they had some companies make them some reels just for Dick's that they could sell at really low prices. He said the combo thing that cabelas and bass pro offers was killing them. Buy a name brand reel and they basically give you one of there poles. Just an attempt to get more fishing costumers. He also said that we will start seeing bigger better selections on baits and lures and all other tackle at Dicks. He could have been FOS too!

Would you kill one for science ???
Hell, you probably know just about all of em'?

Quantum Energy PT E760pt?
Great reel. Never used it but I have the PT TOUR from 08. And I love it. As far as I know the only difference between the Energy and PT for 08 was the amount of bearings. And for 100 dollars. I would say do it. The MSRP on that when it came out was 250$ Its a top of the line reel. See a lot of pros with em too.

Looking for a good flipping reel
I use a 2008 Quantum PT Tour Edition 6.3:1, with 30 lb Sufix Performance Braid. I Love it Love it Love it. Wasn't cheap, but I Love it. If your going to be pitching and flippin into heavy cover, I would stay away form the graphite bodies. Go with an all metal body.

Baitcaster
Go to bass pro or cabelas and they can get you with a good combo for right around 120 bucks. Otherwise, there are not that many options in that price range. 70 to 80 bucks really opens the doors for you. And you are getting a lot more for that 20 bucks. If you already have a pole than I would say check online for some good deals. If not Bass Pro and Cabelas is where its at. There poles are pretty d**n good, sensitive, and have great great warranties.

First baitcaster
I like the Quantum baitcasters. But really as long as it has a respectable amount of bearings and has backlash control, that is all you need for a first baitcaster. I had a Diawa Capricorn from Dick's for my first. It had 8 bearings and a 10 setting backlash control. It was perfect for a first caster. Got my feet wet and only cost 70 bucks. I would go low 6's :1. I would say they are the most versatile in fishing. You can use it with any bait/lure. And you still have some speed to cover lots of water. I found the burners are hard with spinners and cranks. You have to turn the handle so slow. I have a Quantum PT Tour 2008 Edition with a 6.3:1 and love it. I use it for everything. Cranks, topwater, spinners, jigs, jerkbaits, swimbaits. EVERYTHING One other suggestion I do have is if you are going with braid. Go with Sufix Performance Braid. It is a lot limper than most braids. It spools great and I very rarely get backlash. And If I do its not a birds nest. I have used powerpro, spiderwire, and fireline, and did not like them. Personal preference though.

Would you kill one for science ???
I would say do it. It would be hard for me too. I hate killing anything unless it is for the greater good. But I would say go for it. If it can preserve our fishing resources for many many years to come, hell yeah. I do have one suggestion. I would take the fish from waters where there are is little fishing pressure. Ask him if he wants some 2 lb LMB. I need to get rid of some out of my lake so they will grow. To d*** overpopulated. JK. I could get in trouble for taking fish out of the lake.

Which side of the lake?
And if they are cruising those are probably the fish to go after since they are active and probably actively feeding. Rather than the bass sitting in cover in the warm water. They are probably less active. Good point!

Catch and release - the proper way
It works. Yesterday I caught this little 8 9 inch bass that already had a hook in its gut. The fish was so unhealthy, it obviously had problems eating because of the hook. The thing was as thick as a piece of paper. I followed the instructions and out the hook came. It didn't even take any effort. It just kind of pops out. It was a barbed hook too. It do not seem to stress the fish. And if it did damage the fish it was not enough to make it bleed. It felt good to save that little fish. Thanks Glenn!!!!!!

Which side of the lake?
Yeah, very true, but if they have big predators in the lake, the bass usually wont just be sitting out. They need some kind of cover for protection.

Illinois Fishing???
Jeremy wend me a PM if you will be near chicago. I have a private lake were I work (about 20 min from downtown) and I can catch you as many LMB as you could ever want. Most likely no trophies, but 2 lb bass all day long everyday. Its all shoreline, no boats aloud. But you dont need one. Already this year. I have caught well over 100 Largies. Biggest being 2 lbs 12 oz. And it only gets better as the year goes along. There is also loads of walleye. Hammer Handle Pike. Big Channel and Blue Cats, and HUGE CARP. Me and my buddy Swilly78 would be more than happy to have you join us. It's in Northbrook IL. Where does your grandmother live? Here is the Big One.
