  1. What makes a difference is how the line manages on the reel, with mono or copoly some people prefer a bigger spool, with braid no. I'd be looking at both spool size and how a reel feels on my rod. Just about any brand reel now a days is smooth with good functioning drag to handle 5# fish in a freshwater environment, easily obtainable for $80.
  2. Teasers often come as just a skirt, you provide your own hook(s). I'll take a kingfish teaser and hide a 1/2- 1oz egg weight inside and cast it as a jig, good bluefish presentation.
  3. No. Just within the teramar line up there are both NE & SE versions of the rod, each has several actions offered. For example a NE version tmsex70mh and tmse70mh are both mh power, 1 is extra fast the other medium action. Last year I purchased a tms80mh with fast action, IMO the rod felt more like an extra fast, I returned the rod within 45 minutes. Other manufacturers such as Star rods have similar offerings. There is no industry standard on rod action, 1 companies fast action may not be much different than another's med/fast.
  4. There are quite a few barracuda species, IMO the mount does not look like a great barracuda native to Florida waters. Can't say exactly what is, it does look similar to a yellow stripe barracuda but those are found in the Indian ocean..................I looked it up, lol.
  5. Most but not all inshore rods have a foregrip, I see a lot of bass rods without the foregrip. Many of the same guides are used on both types of rods. I don't think there is much difference between two.
  6. I don't follow a script, I let my surroundings dictate my course of action. Inshore, bass, peacocks it's all the same to me, I'm gonna sight cast where I think the fish are gonna be.
  7. I'd repair the rod locally for about 10 bucks. A year or 2 ago I was cuda fishing with my quantum blue runner mh rod, after about an hour of casting I landed a 50" barracuda. I then noticed I had missed one of the guides, maybe the 3 rd one down from the top. I never knew it while casting and did not affect the landing in anyway. I'm still using the rod.
  8. I wouldn't be too technically concerned over 4", I'd be using the rod that felt most comfortable to me.
  9. These shows are strictly for entertainment, no question they are edited. Even Larry Dahlberg doesn't catch 10 muskie in 20 minutes or any other of the exotic species that are targeted. I don't often watch Jeremy Wade, I do prefer Zeb Hogan. I have not been to the locations or have caught the species that they are seeking, but I have caught many triple digit fish. Sometimes, in fact most of the time bait is the better producer. As a rule the hook matches the bait size, very good sized fish are caught on a 4/0 or 5/0 hook, something not unusual for bass fishing. I have used 2 hook king rigs with smaller bait and as many as 4 with a larger bait, landed shark up to 200# with 5/0. My tarpon lures have #4 & #2 trebles and jigs are 2//0 and 4/0, big hooks are not always needed for big fish.
  10. One of the German spokesmen said yesterday that they have no plans to change for now. Not so sure mental problems are the root of the secret service. Getting pay offs and favors from an enemy as in the case of the Columbian drug cartels is greed and corruption.
  11. That is the right tip about keeping the rod tip low, but.................. being a fun fisherman I want the acrobatics. Some of my hardest fighting fish do not not jump, the landing can become anti climatic. Catching fish that go airborn 3-4-5 or more times is an exhilarating thrill, if lost on the jump, so what. I've had my fun, the fish swims off less stressed, less chance of injury (to both of us), for a fish I'd have released anyway. Win-win in my book.
  12. ^^ I'd pick this ^^ I fish with 5 lures, pretty much the same 5 for saltwater.
  13. Quite often I do singe the tag end. A knot tip I got for Henry Wasczuk from his tv show was to make a second wrap when using braid with an improved clinch to prevent pull thru. He was right !! Braid tying to a swivel just might be more common than line to leader in saltwater, the knot works well for that application.
  14. I can still taste that finnan haddie from 60 years ago, no thanks lol. My dad was in the fish business, there also was a wide variety of fish available to us. I just love cod, too bad Atlantic cod are getting fished out but plenty of Pacific cod. My absolute favorite is smoked sable which is Alaskan black cod if I'm not mistaken, about $40 lb. Freshwater lake Superior whitefish is high on my list along with Lake Erie Pickerel, (same as walleye), commercially caught out of Canada they were referred to as pickerel, at home we stall call it that.
  15. There isn't a person alive that lands every fish that's hooked. Discounting fish lost on a jump or having the line get frayed, an experienced fisherman will land the majority of them. The main key to success is keeping a tight line, and never being intimidated by the size of the fish. Very understandable when an angler sees big set of gill plates they get nervous. That's really the opposite reaction to have, that's the time to be cool, calm, collected and take your time. Can't stress coolness and tight lines enough.
  16. I agree about the tipping, just like rotating a polarized filter on a camera lens, a slight movement changes what the lens sees. Fishing pre dawn and into the daytime flip ups on my prescription glasses work well for me. At times I see better without polarization depending on the angle of the sun, or if I'm facing or have my back to it. I prefer to flip up the lenses when tying a knot. For everyday bank and inshore fishing I wear solar shields and off shore I use cocoons.
  17. I have an inexpensive rod with ss guides and have been using PP on it many years, not one iota of a problem. I do have an occasional guide rust out from saltwater use, not a big deal. None of the guides on my rods have experienced any kind of grooving, may have a few cracked inserts and that's about it. Weight differences in guides are not substantial enough to make a difference to me, I'm good to go with stock guides.
  18. Supremes are pretty light with good line capacity. Mine 35...........8.8 oz, 8#@200 30...........7.4 oz, 6#@160
  19. Could be to both. It's a coiling issue, the line needs to be softened up, soak it warm water before spooling.
  20. I wouldn't consider carrying a scale or tape with me, I just don't care about PB and I don't fish tournaments. In my personal ponds I put all fish back, from public canals, I'd give any fish away to some one in need.
  21. I do a heck of lot more saltwater fishing than bass, just about everyone keeps their catch. I do get a bit annoyed at some of the fish whores that are out everyday taking home fish (perfectly legal), these people get nothing from me. I do give fish away to those that I feel are needy. I don't even put my beloved snook on that high pedestal, small slot and limit of 1, that just doesn't happen every day anyway. I pretty much C & R everything and certainly believe in selective harvest, I do have some what of a double standard. I see some one on a bucket I have no problem giving a bass a way, there are plenty of legal ones here. If I can help a family with dinner that is more important to me than just catching a fish, makes me feel pretty good that I helped.
  22. After many years of use I replaced my supreme 30 with a new one. Just a little disappointed, not as smooth as my other ones, still very acceptable. For the future I'd probably go a president and I'm sure I'd be happy with it. If I were to be a bit more serious on my expenditure, I'd be buying a Quantum smoke (salt version for double duty), based on the overwhelming success I've had with my Quantum cabos. I have not handling anything in the price that is on a par with it, IMO of course.
  23. May go hand in hand with some of the bluegill threads. Went out for peacocks yesterday, saw a few fish swimming but I couldn't make out what they were. I scored on my second cast with an inline spinner, I was taken all over the canal, first thought it was peacock, it wasn't. A mayan cichlid that probably didn't weigh more than 6-8 ounces. IMO these fish ounce for ounce (lol) out fight peacocks hands down, not the first time I've thought this. Caught about 5 of them.
  24. Some great bluegill information, don't think I could spend hours exclusively fishing for them.
  25. Regardless of species I opt in favor of using artificial lures. I've used live and cut baits, made concoctions for carp and catfish (chicken livers pretty darn good), just ain't my style any more. I no longer would use any type of scent enhancement.
