  1. I use braid on just about everything, my freshwater reels seldom need respooling. The line on my saltwater reels take much more of a beating, I generally add about 75 -100yds when needed. Today I did a total respool, probably the first in over a year and that was due only to the type of fish running now and the conditions.
  2. Absolutely ! The line and lure pull free a lot easier too. I make a point of opening my bail or on a conventional putting in free spool to take all the tension of the rod tip. I learned my lesson by a few broken tips.
  3. They're here, the mullet run. The last 3 days have been furious, snook, bluefish, jack, tarpon & ladyfish.non stop action. Nothing big but some of the jack have been 10-20# but mostly 2-3# & slot snook. Bluefish being caught by the bucket( limit 10 ). Conditions ideal, plenty of bait,25- 30mph winds out of the east with a NE swell, surf about 4-5 and no seaweed.
  4. I've been broke off many times, but probably not due to line failure but larger fish. Being "cut off" is common.
  5. I see no benefit in permanently attaching both ends, there may be times when 2 pieces may desired. A good 2 pc rod will perform as well as 1 pc and should not come apart when in use.
  6. I have not used it my self, but know some down here in Florida that would not use anything else on their conventional reels. Records speak for themselves, that's reputation. I do not use floro leaders, but use Ande 30 & 40# for my leader stock.
  7. When I was kid in the 50's in Detroit we knew every player at every position on every team in the 4 major sports. This was an age no Internet, no 24 hour cable news, no color tv, fewer teams and no AFC. In those days professional sports was not the same " business " as it is today. Players did not want jump from one team to another for the sake of a better contract, most had off season jobs. Players wanted raise their families in the city where they played, become community leaders, and was not all that rare playing for one team their entire career. Trades were a very big deal then and many of us heartbroken if a favorite players was traded. Yes they were our teams then, the players represented us, look at some of the fans in the old newsreels, they had passion that fans don't have today. Many of the players were idols then, Al Kaline in Detroit, Bart Starr in Green Bay, Gordie Howe, Willie Mays and even as late Michael Jordan.......I no longer feel the " rush" of the hometown athlete.
  8. Sunday morning was the first time I did not go to the ocean to fish, just didn't care for the weather. I did some fresh water a little later in the morning. Sitting here at 3:30 I'm debating on the ocean or going back to bed, it's nippy.
  9. I use a swivel to attach my leader, then a duo lock on the spoon, makes lure changes easier for me and seems to work well. In saltwater I still use swivel and leader(except for mackerel) but tie my spoon using a loop knot, lure changes are made less frequently in the brine and not unusual to use same lure for long period of time. I use spoons probably about 75% of all my fishing.
  10. I use the Blaze minnow and the Blaze popper, they work as well as any other. I buy them at Sports Authority for $ 2.99, although I have seen an increase in price lately. They are not easy to find.
  11. I have a 4000 shimano spheros, the line laid on the spool perfectly. Recently I added about a 100 yd(braid) instead of replacing the entire spool, now the line tapers towards the bottom of the spool. I'm not convinced yet but I think the joining knot may be the culprit. I have reeled in the entire spool under load and the situation still exists, that being said I see no performance reduction so I'm just leaving it that way.
  12. I'm a braid man all the way. Freshwater........pond 10#/15# leader high bank canal 15#/20# leader,light(2000) spinning Saltwater..........most beach use 15#/30# leader larger target species 20#/40# leader,medium(4000) spin
  13. I understand anyone having brand loyalty and taking it personal if some go another route. I own your favorite brand as well, and yes they make a fine reel, but that does mean other companies make inferior products. I have yet to read or hear about a negative report regarding a Cabo reel, here's one favorable review,http://www.reelreports.com/tackle-reviews/spinning-reels/Quantum/quantum-cabo-pts.html but If one were to dig deep enough I'm sure there is a conflicting report out there. I base my opinion on personal ownership, the reel is solid and well built, smooth with an excellent drag, performs flawless. Being objective and comparing this reel to the stradic the only drawback is weight, but for me it isn't a big deal. I would have no qualms in buying another or a stradic for that matter.
  14. I don't mean to undermine anyone that is trying to sell used equipment. True the seller sets the market, but the true value is what the buyer is willing to pay. Especially with a reel, however "new" it may be, it is still used mechanical apparatus with wearable parts, with little or no warranty time left. My top price for any used reel is no more than 50% msrp, without exception.
  15. I suspect he has a pretty good relationship with the company and his sales rep. It really comes in handy when you fish disposable gear. There is a lot of talk that the "new" Quantum is producing higher quality products. I would suggest waiting a few years to see if that turns out to be true. In the meantime, there are plenty of alternatives with proven track records. 8-) A $200 Cabo reel being disposable? This is a fine reel that many prefer over the competition, I doubt that mine will find a dumpster anytime soon, always comes down to personal choice. Perhaps the opinion in the quotation box is written out of personal loyalty and a relationship with another manufacturer. I personally own a number of different brands and my Quantum stands up to competitors in the same price range. There is nothing wrong spouting accolades of products that one feels strong about, but to belittle another product based on opinion is a disservice to forum members.
  16. I go with a guide out of Ft. Pierce, Florida, in addition to being a guide he owns a tackle shop too, so his options are unlimited. He fishes nothing but Quantum rods Quantum Cabo reels. I've used his equipment a number of times and I liked it, I just bought a Quantum reel.
  17. Geography......... On the east coast we prefer a wind in our face creating a higher surf and a better trough, brings the bait in which brings the fish. If I were fishing on the west coast, I'd want a west wind. Growing up in Michigan my dad always tried to get the wind in our face, he was right, fish want to be where the bait is.
  18. As others have said you actually have less leverage over a fish with a longer rod. As the rod gets longer the distance to the fulcrum point (right in front of your hands) increases which increases the force necessary to control the tip. I like a rod with a longer fore grip, when battling a larger fish my hand is always up on that grip giving me a bit more leverage. I landed a couple of lemons last year in the #150 range on spinning holding my rod that way.
  19. Pretty sure option 2 is getting the nod. I like these rods, this would be my 6 th, 1 off shore spinning and 4 inshore, I find them to be light, but I do 4 martini pull ups a day.
  20. RW is right ! I would like to add this, if one has sponsors they should consider themselves not only as fisherman but as businessmen as well. In business NEVER refer to any customer as "small time" and never drop one because you may think you are too big. Venting a frustration on an open forum is not wise, you just never know who may be "watching". If I were an owner of a small tackle shop I may want to see what fisherman are talking about regarding tackle and baits and where better to get that info..........Bass Resource. Just my $.02
  21. St. Louis Rams have dropped Rush Limbaugh from the bidding list to purchase the the team, Limbaugh grew up in Missouri.
  22. I had a 100 series reel sitting idle and my Redbones were on sale so I bought a ml 7' 6/12 1/4-1/8. Got home and compared the rod to my clarus 6'6 medium power 6/12 1/8-1/2 rod, the Redbone even though rated less power has way more backbone than the Clarus (30 supreme mounted). Option 1. keep new Redbone and switch reels Option 2. exchange Redbone for another bone 6'6 light 4/10 18-1/4 Option 3. return it, I have too much stuff already What to do.......lol
  23. Physics are identical comparing a fishing rod to a golf club. The longer club creates a wider arc which increases club head speed yielding a further drive with less effort, the head of a golf club "loads" up exactly the way a fishing rod does.
  24. Down here with a west wind most stay at home, NE winds rules.
  25. IMO nothing works better than soaking your line in a bucket of water, preferably hot, obviously water won't hurt your line as that is the intent of the line.....to be in water. If one truly believes that this stuff works use it, but I see no reason to. I think buying the banjo minnow is a better investment.
